The goals defined for the first TBCC Art + Feminism Wikipedia Edit-a-Thon were
- recruit new editors
- increase awareness for information literacy components such as verifiable sources and fact-based writing
- add or improve content
We were able to meet all three of the goals at our event. We had three participants who edited two articles. A third participant learned the process, but due to time constraints was unable to stay to edit. We tracked the success of increasing awareness through a short survey of participants. Their feedback to the question, What is one new skill or piece of information you acquired today? included:
- "How to track changes"
- "I learned how to edit Wikipedia pages"
- "I learned so much about the artist I was "editing" that I just ended up distractedly researching."

Learning edit
What worked well? What didn't work so well? What would you do differently next time?
As a small, rural community college, we strive to create the same opportunities and conversations that students, faculty, and community members can be a part of in larger communities with more access to resources. We were aware in organizing this event that our turnout for the first year may be small, but it provided an opportunity for us to have one-on-one support and conversations about information literacy, Wikipedia and it's place in academic research, and the issues around inequality in representation as promoted by Art+Feminism. We, of course, would have loved more participants and moving forward we discussed opening our target audience wider to include the community at large. We also discussed broader marketing and the potential of bringing in local artists as guest speakers to make the event more of a draw for those not on campus. We had the benefit of buy-in from a few faculty members who encouraged their students to attend the event by offering extra credit. We are looking into the possibility of trying course work to the event in the future and expanding the subjects to edit to tie into the curriculum.
