Goals

Did you meet your goals? Are you happy with how the project went? I was able to successfully present our work on "Improving new article review" to a large audience at the conference and address followup questions appropriately. Besides there were a number of one-one interactions about the project and research works related to Wikipedia.

Specific Engagements

• Alexandar Noltre does research on hackathons and presented his work on Microsoft Hackathon at the conference. He was interested in looking into productivity of open source hackathons like Wikimedia. To that end, I connected him with Dr. Aaron Halfaker to get the right directions towards a collaboration with Wikipedia.
• The presentation led to a post on reddit by Dr. Amy Bruckman from Georgia Tech. Have to follow-up for a possible Q/A on reddit regarding the same.
• Followup with Dr. David McDonald from University of Washington who has been doing work on Wikipedia. He was looking for a way to map articles to their high level topics and I encouraged him to use our drafttopic API hosted on mw:ORES

• What worked well?

The talks during snacks worked really well in getting to know people and explaining them about research on Wikipedia.

• What did not work so well?

I could've approached more people if I had the time

• What would you do differently next time?

I would have detailed responses for people based on their interest in different components of the project. This would help me engage people at a much better level.

Remaining funds

Do you have any remaining grant funds?

78.39$ remain as part of unused expenses. I intend to use those in organizing a local developer Hackathon at a university in Bengaluru, India sometime in Jan-Feb 2019. I expect the majority of funds to be spent in buying Wikimedia shirts/goodies which are a good way to make participants interested in such an event.

Remaining funds are retained by the grantee with WMF's permission until February 28, 2019. After this date, please return any remaining unused grant funds to WMF following the instructions at Grants:Return unused funds to WMF.
