Portland Art and Feminism Edit-a-thon 2022

Goals

Did you meet your goals? Are you happy with how the project went? We hosted an online and in-person edit-a-thon with a total of 17 editors. Many of these editors were new to Wikipedia. I felt good about bringing in and training numerous people who had never edited Wikipedia before. I was also pleasantly surprised to lean that four of the editors were international (two in Canada, one in the UK, one in India). Two editors work for a college, where they are hoping to host an edit-a-thon in the future to improve entries of female artists featured in the college's art collection. Our in-person turnout was 10 editors, which was lower than I was hoping but this was the first in-person Wikipedia event in Portland since the pandemic began and it was a good start to building back the community.

Learning

Projects do not always go according to plan. Sharing what you learned can help you and others plan similar projects in the future. Help the movement learn from your experience by answering the following questions:

What worked well? The in-person event location was perfect, in terms of the size of the space and accessibility. It has gender-neutral bathrooms, ADA access, and big tables and WIFI to work at. We ate burritos together for lunch outside and altogether it was fun!
What did not work so well? I was hoping that more students would turn out from local colleges and art schools, but they did not.
What would you do differently next time? Build better collaborations with local colleges to make sure they get the word out to students and staff about this event.
