Goals edit

Did you meet your goals? Are you happy with how the project went?

We are happy with the project first of all because Art&Fminisim was the only in-person event that was being organised since the first year of the user group but since last 3 years we had failed to it because of the Wikipedia block in the country. After 3 years, we could finally organize it at the same place we were organising the event before the block: at the historical building of the Women's Library and Information Centre, Istanbul. So, the event had a symbolic value for the group. It was like picking up from where we left 3 years ago. We felt so privileged that the librarians opened the doors of the library again we continued our work on entering women biographies by using and inspiring from the material existing in the library.

During the event 23 editors edited 85 articles, 14 new articles were created, 108 references were added, 19 files were uploaded the Commons. Some of the contribitors were experienced editors who joined the event by editing women biographies from their homes rather than coming up the event, whereas some participants who were present there, were newcomers who came by the library after learning about the event on social media. In sum we reached our goal of recruiting new editors, increasing visibility for women in Turkish wikipedia.

The project also helped increasing visibility of Wikipedia in the Turkish press. A reporter from BBC Turkey visited the event and especially that BBC article was very effective in bringing us new contacts after the event.

Outcome edit

Please report on your original project targets. Please be sure to review and provide metrics required for Rapid Grants. Number of repeat participants (for projects that include a series of events) 20

Target outcome Achieved outcome Explanation
4 events 1 event Global pandemic started. We could not make any other in-person event. This was the last in-person event of the year.
4x20=80 participants 23 Only one event was made. Goal for one event was reached.
Number of new editors more than 50(for 4 events) 9 (one event) We expected total 50 new editors in 4 event, we got 9 editors in the first event. That outcome is not bad but we saw that to have new editors showing up in the venue, it would be better to pick a venue more easily accessible.
Number of of articles created or improved 100 85 We expected 100 articles edited in 4 events; but in only one event there were 85 edits. This came from the contributions of those experienced editors who were not in Istanbul but recruited the event and created women-related articles during the event.
Number of repeat participants (for projects that include a series of events) 20 N/A could not make other 3 activities because of the pandemic conditions.

Learning edit

Projects do not always go according to plan. Sharing what you learned can help you and others plan similar projects in the future. Help the movement learn from your experience by answering the following questions:

  • What worked well?

First of all the enthuasism of the librarians at Women's Library was great. It's the first and only women-centred library and archive in Turkey nd this activity was very good for further developing our relations with there. Secondly, the event had good coverage on the press, mainly because of the good network of our colleague who organized the event. But the interview with the BBC reporter was especially important; right after that event we were contacted for an interview with Hürriyet, one of the major newspapers who wanted to cover the event and Wikipedia in the weekend supplement of the newspaper (the article is here). And upon that, some potential partners we were in touch told that they first heard of our group by Hurriyet interview. Therefore, we can say that the event helped a lot in increasing visibility of the group.

  • What did not work so well?

We could not start the activity on time. We planned to first make a presentation but there were many participants who were late because of the traffic, or simply because the beginning time was too early for them. In the morning there were so few people, that we decided to wait; but that caused lost of time for those who came early. We could plan the time according to this experience in the next in-person events.

  • What would you do differently next time?

The event started with a presentation on Wikipedia editing, continued with a presentation about the Women's Library and a presentation about the gender gap problem. We would make the presentation part shorter so that the participants would have time to work themselves and ask questions when they need.
