Goals edit

Did you meet your goals? Are you happy with how the project went?

Yes! The project was a success and proved its fruition. We were able to hold two (2) Edit-a-thons which brought together (18) new editors and a total of (26) participants in general. Our project aimed at projecting the visibility of women/ women editors on wikipedia and commons. It was fulfilling also because during our photo hunt campaign we were able to establish networks that will promote the cause of our movement.

Outcome edit

Please report on your original project targets.

Target outcome Achieved outcome Explanation
Recruit new editors 18 New Recruits During the 2 edit-a-thons we were amazed to have new members eager to learn and bridge the gender gap. Ratio of male and female attendance was 1:2 respectively.
Increase skills for existing female editors All editors present acquired new and advanced skills on commons and assisted with the migration of articles from Wikipedia onto WikiData.

They also learnt how to categorise and add specific license to images. This came about as a result of our participation with the Visible Wiki Women's Challenge campaign with Whose Knowledge.

Existing editors who participated attested to the fact that they benefited mostly from the practical aspect than theoretical. They were ready to do more research to help the cause.
Create a minimum of 10 new articles about women or female-related topics on Wikipedia 13 Articles created were on women. Due to higher number of new editors, some of these articles were on review and yet to be approved.

However, in total 13 new articles were created.

Improve a minimum of 10 articles on women or female-related topics on Wikipedia. We improved 16 articles Since our project was centred on women, we were able to remove stubs and add some content to these articles solely related to women. Some more images were updated and titles were corrected.
Upload a minimum of 10 photos of notable women from Ghana. 13 photos were uploaded on commons Although it was difficult to acquire images of these women at freewill, we were able to exceed our target. However, we hope to get as many more as we can whenever deemed possible even though the competition is over.

Learning edit

Projects do not always go according to plan. Sharing what you learned can help you and others plan similar projects in the future. Help the movement learn from your experience by answering the following questions:

  • What worked well?

Holding two separate sessions brought together many new editors. They were zealous to partake in our photo hunts to an extent of attending events they weren't invited to just have images of these women captured and uploaded on Commons.

It was also encouraging to have past editors who appreciated the practical aspects of improving articles solely related to women. Some were also proud of the fact that they felt like actual researchers who will make any frantic effort to help bridge the gender gap on Wikipedia and internet in general. Despite our challenges in securing a venue for our second Edit-a-thon, we are glad to have secured partnership with one of the most renowned churches in Ghana. We therefore seek to further our relationship with them and indulge their youth with our future activities for the betterment of the movement.

  • What did not work so well?

Although we couldn't foretell events hosting notable women will eventually happen or not, Volunteers usually attended some events which posed to have notable people present but instead turned out futile. Also, with regards to the creation of new articles, it was unlikely for us to publish most articles since they were under the review process because we had over 50% of new members joining the sessions.

  • What would you do differently next time?

To enhance better interaction and achievement of our photohunt, we hope to list down all upcoming events in advance and coordinate with organisers who will confirm our participation as well as the presence notable persons at the event to be captured. We also strive to note down all entrance fees and budget appropriately because some of these events were rated at a high price and was also located in other regions of the country which demanded high cost of travel.

Anything else edit

Anything else you want to share about your project? We would like to bring to your attention our intention of organising more of the Photo hunt since most notable women often attend events year round, hence a great platform to get more images captured. Also our project brought onboard skilled photographers as partners.
