Did you meet your goals? Are you happy with how the project went?

All of the Project's metric goals were exceeded except for Number of articles created or improved: 550 (275 Wikidata items, 275 Wikipedia articles), where some of the legislators already had a good Wikipedia article and well edited Wikidata item.
The projects timeline got shitted between days because of holidays that interspersed the editathin's planned period. Also, team members spend considerable amount of time to clean up some problematic edits left by a few participants. Regardless of these hiccups, that are by far quite minor, the editathon series was hugely successful and I am excited that it happened. The editahton series
  • Drew plenty of attention on Social Media
  • Attracted 29 new editors, to whom the Parliament of Ghana Editathon series was their first encounter with any Wikimedia projet, and have gone on the become vibrant community members in a short span of time,
  • Allowed the team to forge new collaborations in our local communities, and signed partnership agreement with local groups
  • Opened up doors and empowered the team to follow up and embark on similar projects in the future.

Projects do not always go according to plan. Sharing what you learned can help you and others plan similar projects in the future. Help the movement learn from your experience by answering the following questions:

  • What worked well?
  1. The theme of the editathon was especially captivating, and we made sure our posters were interesting as well. We asked prospective participants to register to attend the event through a Google form. In the form, we asked them how they got interested in the event. Many indicted that the theme Parliament of Ghana got them fascinated. Although we did not budget for posters, our gamble of spending money towards that was helpful.
  2. Our choice of location to organised the editathons; on a university campus, enabled us attract participants who were students. We have plans of setting up a Wikipedia fan club at the Madina Institute of Science and Technology, and the relationship we have developed with the university and students may make it easier.
  3. A lot of time was spent organising the Wikipedia and (especially) Wikidata entries into a spreadsheet-like format: Wikidata entries page. That way, it was easier for participants to choose and pick cells to edit, and that was useful for us (the organizers) to know where we are at, and how much more work was left. The arduous time spent organizing the entries this way (with help from more experienced members of the Wikidata community) was worth the effort.
  4. Wikidata entries were split up into groups of 10 per page. These pages were shared for participants at the entrance of the conference room as they entered. When a participant finished filling up the cells in their sheet of paper, they had to stand up and walk out to the registration desk to ask for more. At the end of the day, it became more of a competition, that a participant would walk out to ask for more work and get noticed in the process by other participants.
  5. Participants and top contributors received stickers.
  • What did not work so well?
  1. The venue promised us a set of routers but failed to deliver. We couldn't complain because we were not paying for it to begin with.
  2. We experience power fluctuations that brought the event to a halt for more than an hour on one of the session. It took that long for the university to switch to their backup generator.
  3. Aside from the proposed objectives in the grant that were met; i.e. adding Member of the Parliament of Ghana (Q21290881) item + qualifiers to all 275 MP's Wikidata entries, the organising team included the following added (personal) objective: Educated at (P69), Academic degree (P512), Academic major (P812), Religion (P140), and Occupation (P106). This proved more difficult than we anticipated because at the end of the 3 main editathons, we had many more empty cells that we had to fill up by ourselves back at home. This put plenty of stress on already exhausted volunteers.
  4. It was recommended of participants to bring their own laptop, but some came to the workshop without one and were unable to participate during the practical sessions.
  5. Some participants did not respond to confirm that they'd be attending (as was suggested by the mailing list announcement sent out) but showed up at the events anyway. Several rounds of were made to purchase extra refreshment in some cases.
  • What would you do differently next time?
  1. Next time we'll take full responsibility of handling our internet access by adding routers to our budget.
  2. In choosing a venue, we may give preference to choosing a venue that is better able to quickly switch to backup generator when electric power goes off.
  3. Instead of an in-person editathon, we may consider running an online contest for a similar project in the future to give volunteers the relief of plenty of work.
