Yes, we were able to meet our goals. We were able to recruit new editors, increase the skill of existing editors and also add items on Tourism in Nigeria on Wikidata.

Outcome edit

Please report on your original project targets. Please be sure to review and provide metrics required for Rapid Grants.

Target outcome Achieved outcome Explanation
Number of events: 2 events 2 events One training and one edit-a-thon were organized as scheduled.
Number of participants: 25 participants 35 participants 33 and 30 respectively for the training and editathon. 5 editors participated virtually for the edit-a-thon.
Number of new editors: 8+ 10 The target was achieved as new editors were delighted to know more about Wikidata and its sister projects.
Number of articles created or improved: 80+ 275 items created, 391 articles edited, 32 references added The target was attained and surpassed because of the willingness of the participants to add their own quota to the improvement of Wikidata.
Number of repeat participants (for projects that include a series of events) = 15+ 30 95 per cent of people that attended the training also participated in the edit-a-thon.

Learning edit

Projects do not always go according to plan. Sharing what you learned can help you and others plan similar projects in the future. Help the movement learn from your experience by answering the following questions:

  • What worked well?

The curiosity of people to know more about Wikidata helped us to achieve some part of our goal which resulted in a great experience for both the organizers and the participants. Everyone, especially the new participants enjoyed the ambiance which made them invite other people and also spread the vision statement of the Wikimedia foundation to their friends. We were able to get people who have the ability and can volunteer to add their quota to the development of Wikidata.

  • What did not work so well?

We received the funds late which made us to consider the grant's end date extension because the bank we used could not take up the task of receiving the fund which slow down the execution of the project plans.

The network coverage in the environment was only limited to a number of network providers. We had to change our network provider about twice before we could get the one that works better in that environment.

  • What would you do differently next time?

Proper research would be made to know the network provider that works best in a particular environment before renting it. In the subsequent training and editathon, participants will be allowed to share their experiences and challenges so others can learn and also have a better understanding of what Wikidata entails and how it works.
