Project Goal edit

Choose one or more of the following goals. You can add or delete goals as needed.

  1. The main objective of this project is for our local Wikipedia Projects to be involved in this international campaign. Articles will certainly be improved since it will be provided with the right photos supporting the article itself. The accumulated photos that are all available on Wikimedia Commons will find their place in articles located in Wikipedia. A stub article is common in our local Wikipedia, then adding a photo for it is another step of improving those stub articles.
  2. Recruit new editors by teaching them one of the easy way to edit in Wikipedia which is providing the right photo for an article and creating the appropriate captions. I have started as newbie editor and engage in this type of editing before WPWP and I can at least say that this is one quick way of engaging editors in a lesser task but with significant contributions for existing articles. This will eventually help them familiarize the interface of Wikipedia.
  3. Engage existing editors and improve their skills on choosing photos appropriate for articles since one of the aim of the WPWP is increase the understanding of readers through adding photos relevant to the articles.

Project Plan edit

Activities edit

Tell us how you'll carry out your project. Be sure to answer the following questions:
1. What content will the contest focus on, and why is it important to your community?

As a local editor, I have observed that mostly of the articles available on our Wikipedia are of geography content and biographies. In order for this contest to be systematic and easy to assess and track, providing categories for articles that needed images should be available to the participants. Through this, it will be easy for them to participate and locate those target articles. The Petscan tool will be used to track articles with missing photos. Links from the Wikimedia Photography contests will also be provided on the local contest page. From previous edit-a-thons I have organized, engagement to editing is really an obstacle due to the handicap of not being able to accomplish a complete article. With this simple activity of providing photos for articles, new and old participants of edit-a-thon can play a part.

2. How have you let relevant Wikimedia communities know about this proposal? You are required to provide links to on-wiki pages to inform these communities about your proposed work. Examples of places where this can be done include community discussion pages, affiliate discussion pages, or relevant project talk pages.
You may also provide information about external social media channels you may be using.

This will be posted through the fb channels of the local Wikimedia activities, info graphic posting weeks before the contest, and with the help on the International Team of WPWP by which I am one of the members.

3. How will you let participants know about the contest? In what ways will you be communicating with them?
For example, these can include on-wiki spaces, social media channels, mailing lists, messaging apps, or physical/online gatherings.

This activity will be posted on different social media sites. My fellow Wikimedians here were also able to gather new editors from their activities and I can invite them to join this campaign. I will also create pages on the two target Wikipedia. For Central Bikol Wikipedia, I am already an administrator so this is doable.

4. How will you judge the contest and award prizes?
Note: Grantees, judges, and other contest leaders are ineligible to receive prizes. Grantees who are serving as judges may not receive gifts through grant funding.

There is a general guideline for the campaign rules of the contest and I will also be using the procedures cited there. Contributions can be track using the Wikimedia Hashtag tool. After each edit, the participant will be advised to label #WPWP and #WPWPCB (specific hashtag assigned by the WPWP organizing team) in the summary box so it will be easy to track and filter contributions. A list of participants on the local WPWP page provided will also be helpful, wherein participants can also create their own list of contributions. BAGLAMa/GLAMorgan will also be used for tracking impact.

5. For photo contests, what is the strategy to get images used on projects?

It would always be helpful to conduct tutorials before the contest. Simple visual guides can be provided before the start of the contest. There are number of resources that the WPWP team has provide which can be useful not only to organizers but also to participants. Tools such as FIST, WDWP, WDFIST, File candidates, WikiShootMe, and CC search can be part of the tutorial before the contest.

6. Are you running any in-person events or activities? If so, you will need to complete the steps outlined on the Risk Assessment protocol related to COVID-19. When you have completed these steps, please provide a link to your completed copy of the risk assessment tool below:

No, this is purely online activity since this is doable online. Awarding can also be done online and prizes can be shipped to the winners.

7. Is there anything else you want to tell us about this project?

I have participated in this great event last year and this time I have got the chance to be part of the organizing committee as a member. One thing I could help them is to organize this here in the Philippines so I can actually connect to actual editors and improve my chance of largely contributing on the international campaign.

Impact edit

How will you know if the project is successful and you've met your goals? Please include the following targets and feel free to add more:

  1. Number of participants: 30-50 participants
  2. Number of photos used on Wikipedia articles: 2000-3000

Resources edit

What resources do you have? Include information on who is organizing the project, what they will do, and if you will receive support from anywhere else (in-kind donations or additional funding).

I have already coordinated with User:T Cells before drafting this project and asked for his support. My team-members may help me also even remotely to execute this project well. Aside from that, we have a growing community organizers and editors here who are always willing to collaborate for Wikimedia projects.

What resources do you need? For your funding request, list bullet points for each expense and include a total amount.
