Learning

edit

Projects do not always go according to plan. Sharing what you learned can help you and others plan similar projects in the future. Help the movement learn from your experience by answering the following questions:

  • What worked well?

The achievements of the Wiki Update team can be attributed to the successful expansion of our partnerships. By forging collaborations with organizations such as Open Knowledge Ghana and Women For Sustainability Africa, as well as engaging with communities involved in edit-a-thon projects like Afrodemics and Wikimedia Awareness in Ogbomosho, we experienced significant positive outcomes. Our active involvement in these community projects not only resulted in increased growth and metrics for our partners but also led to a notable rise in the number of editors participating in their projects.

  • What did not work so well?

During the past period, we encountered difficulties primarily related to internet connectivity issues and software challenges with the tools employed in producing our open podcasts. In reflection, these issues hindered the efficiency of our operations. Looking ahead to the upcoming year (2024), we are proactively addressing these challenges. Our focus is on improving internet reliability and acquiring more robust tools to enhance the production quality of our open podcasts, thereby ensuring a smoother and more impactful growth trajectory.

  • What would you do differently next time?

In the upcoming year of 2024, our plan is to launch a YouTube channel that will serve as a platform for organizing visual sessions where the community can witness interactions between hosts and guests. Additionally, we aim to complement this visual experience with our existing audio podcasts or productions. The initiation of this YouTube channel will commence with a pilot project centered around Wiki Updates, ensuring a gradual and inclusive process of community engagement on the YouTube platform.

Addressing our social media strategy, we've been active on Twitter, WhatsApp and a bit on facebook over the past period. However, moving forward, we've decided to extend our presence to other engaging social media outlets such as Instagram, Facebook, Telegram,Tiktok among others. This expansion will contribute to a more diverse and comprehensive reach within our audience.

Furthermore, we've recognized the importance of connecting with other open technology communities that share a common interest in the future of the internet, particularly in the context of the web 3 movement and its potential impact on the Wikimedia movement. This collaborative approach aims to foster a broader perspective and facilitate knowledge exchange.

In response to feedback and data analysis, particularly from platforms like Spotify, we have identified a need to enhance our training sessions. Consequently, we plan to conduct more training sessions focused on key tools and projects that are essential to our community. Based on Spotify data, it is evident that listeners appreciate training sessions related to creating, designing, and structuring content on Wikipedia and its sister projects. This strategic emphasis on training will complement the community stories we've been sharing, creating a more enriched and valuable experience for our audience.

We found encouragement in the unexpected outreach from individuals and communities who were drawn to our work, expressing a desire to provide paid podcast services such as editing and tool provision. As we continue to grow and establish our reputation within the movement, we currently operate within the constraints of a tight budget allocated by the foundation. Looking ahead, our goal is to expand our engagement with communities, fostering collaborations with those willing to offer their services for free, as well as those with whom we can establish mutually beneficial paid arrangements. This approach aligns with our vision for a future where we can further enhance our podcasting capabilities and outreach.

Spotify Podcast has provided us with strategies aimed at fostering growth and engagement with both our existing audience and a broader demographic. We plan to implement these strategies to make a positive impact within the movement.
