GENERAL RESULTS OF THE CONTEST

OBSERVATION: Contribution values (addition, modification, deletion of categories and legends) on Commons were calculated per participant x contribution day directly in the participants profile, because "Outreach Dashboard" and "Event Metrics" does not include these changes in the general statistics.

Y We received photographs of several Conservation Units, according to the initial objective.
N This year's contest was challenging for several reasons. Protection measures against COVID-19 kept the Conservation Units closed for months, which is one of the possible reasons for the number of photos we received this year. And, following last year's pattern, the North of the country continues to have fewer entries in the competition, despite the vast area of Amazon rainforest.
Increase the dissemination of the contest, especially in the North of the country, through partnerships with volunteers and local communities.

Y The meeting with the contest winners was a great opportunity to learn about the history of the photographs and get feedback on the contest. They responded positively to the awards received, mainly gift cards.
N Some winners did not activate the receipt of email, despite being a contest rule, which made it difficult to contact them to send the prizes. In one case, the winner did not respond within the deadline and the prize was directed to the winner in the next position, as stipulated by national rules.
Using the grant to fund in-person activities after the pandemic, including as a form of award, would be a good way to increase interaction between contest participants.

N The competition jury selected more than one image from the same photographer among the best photographs. One case was in the same category (1st, 4th and 5th in “Living beings”) and the other in the same and different categories (1st and 4th in “Landscape” and 1st and 2nd in “Environmental destruction”).
The rules did not foresee this situation, which is not a serious problem. But, in the future, it would be advisable for each winner to receive one prize, for their best placement in the contest. This way, more participants could benefit from the awards, making the contest more attractive to the public.

Y Edit-a-thons online was a good idea as we had participants from all over the country. They had experience in different taxa and contributed to the activity being a success, providing information exchange and identification of most animal species.
And the help for parents with children was well received, showing the importance of including participants with families.
N The number of people who signed up for Edit-a-thons through Google Forms was greater than the number of actual participants, indicating that despite the initial interest, few people engaged in the activity.
It is necessary to create new strategies to engage old and new editors, especially botanists, because there are many unidentified images in this category.

N There was a difference of opinion during the organization of the contest that deserves to be registered. The regulation of contests with free prize distribution has been provided for by law for many years (Law No. 5768/1971). WLE is characterized as a contest "exclusively artistic, sporting or recreational cultural" (Article 3) organized by civil society with the social objective of "defence, preservation and conservation of the environment and promotion of sustainable development" (Article 4, § 1A - included by Law No. 14.027, of 2020)". As such, contests are governed by strict rules and despite the Disclaimer from international Wiki Loves Earth 2021, organizers are not exempt to obey national legislation and to honor their own regulations. During the contest, one of the organizers acted unilaterally (that is, without informing the other organizers or contestants) to exclude one of the categories (Environmental destruction) claiming that there were few photographs. This decision was revoked after we asked for legal advice, which justified that participants in the excluded category could feel penalized and legally contest the result of the entire contest. Unfortunately, several internal disturbances followed this episode, making it difficult to complete the contest, but they were overcome.
Review the contest rules before next edition, discussing what modifications are needed based on past experience and national legislation. And provide basic training on the tools used during the contest for organizers to avoid centralizing activities on one person.

OBSERVATIONS: The original application considered only two categories for the contest ("Living beings" and "Landscape"). With the addition of the third category (Environmental destruction), the value of the prizes were recalculated and distributed equally among them.

Dollar values (USD 1.00 = BRL 5.18) were calculated based on the day the grant was received (Aug 11).
