Grants:Project/Rapid/Global Open Initiative/Community and Team Engagement/Report

Report accepted
This report for a Rapid Grant approved in FY 2020-21 has been reviewed and accepted by the Wikimedia Foundation.

Goals edit

Did you meet your goals? Are you happy with how the project went?

  • Yes, As at the time this grant was proposed, Ghana was on lockdown due to the increasing number of Covid-19 cases. This became really difficult for us to organize in-person Wikipedia workshops. Thanks to this grant we were able to host several online virtual workshops, bi-weekly meetings, community and team monthly calls.

Learning edit

Projects do not always go according to plan. Sharing what you learned can help you and others plan similar projects in the future. Help the movement learn from your experience by answering the following questions:

  • What worked well?
  1. We were able to stay connected with our community by organizing team and community meetups, editathons and virtual workshops.
  2. It gave us the opportunity to onboard new editors who would otherwise not get the opportunity to attend in-person workshops due to lack of time.
  3. We recruited new volunteers to our community during online meetups.
  4. We were able to meet regularly to discuss our new and ongoing projects as a team.
  5. Community members had the opportunity to know each other beyond their usernames.
  • What did not work so well?
  1. Some people struggled to stay connected during zoom calls due to network challenges.
  2. Even though we tried to accommodate everyone, some people could not join some of our weekend sessions.
  • What would you do differently next time?

We will try to buy or rent internet devices to members who can not afford them. We will try to engage more people to understand what days will work for everyone so more members can participate.
