Draft report
This is a draft of a grant report for a grant funded for fiscal year 2017-18. Please do not respond or comment on it just yet: it's not yet ready for review. To read the approved grant submission, please visit Grants:Project/Rapid/Enlightening talk: OSM and Wikidata.

Goals

edit

Did you meet your goals? Are you happy with how the project went?
Answer: Partially. Although the event was as planned and the contacts established with strategic members of the Brazilian OpenStreetMap community and developers were fruitful, many people who had confirmed their presence did not attend. This could lead me to wonder if the communication strategies of the event might have been insufficient, but the event was duly publicized in a variety of media, including email lists and WhatsApp and Telegram channels.

Outcome

edit

Please report on your original project targets.

The main idea was to begin a series of enlightning talks on topics that require some kind of more sophisticated and detailed knowledge about Wikimedia projects, data bases etc. The idea, imho, still seems relevant and meaningful to the Wikimedia movement, but due to the low attendance of the people who had confirmed their presence, I now think that these meetings should be done on a more informal level, with a smaller contribution of resources. On the afternoon of the event, we focused on trying to understand how the OSM and Wikidata databases could take advantage of one another. The volatility of OSM data was and still is a limiting factor, and to date a single property of Wikidata seems to be used working directly on OSM mapped data. Although few people attended, the enlightening conversation of that day is still alive among people who attended, such as Eder Porto, Mike Peel and Vitor George, (and me, obviuously) for example, as well as those who could not attend, such as NMaia, Bonix and others and wikimedians and mappers who are interested in these issues. More recently, I presented the same topic in the context of the Wikidata Lab series: Wikidata Lab VII.
Target outcome Achieved outcome Explanation
10-20 people attending 6 people attended This could lead me to wonder if the communication strategies of the event might have been insufficient, but the event was duly publicized in a variety of media, including email lists and WhatsApp and Telegram channels. The event was on Saturday, in a pleasant and easily accessible place in the city of São Paulo, next to the subway. Some people gave me satisfaction because they did not come, others simply don't. Ok, this practice is not something uncommon in Brazil, but still a bit frustrating. :(
Establish an enlightening conversation about a topic of difficult understanding / perception Achieved After the meeting the participants continued to focus on the topic and many manual and automatic editions were carried out within the scope of the event, from a myriad of OSM relations indicated in Wikidata to the various properties of Wikidata in the "ways" and "points" of OSM, since Wikidata does not have properties for them.

Learning

edit

Projects do not always go according to plan. Sharing what you learned can help you and others plan similar projects in the future. Help the movement learn from your experience by answering the following questions:

  • What worked well?

The venue, food, internet connection, the enlighting talk itself.

  • What did not work so well?

The amount of people expected.

  • What would you do differently next time?

I now think that these meetings should be done on a more informal level, with a smaller contribution of resources. At least as long as the demand for such events does not impose a larger structure. The idea of a series of schooling talks still seems captivating, but for now I am conducting more informally.
