Learning edit

Projects do not always go according to plan. Sharing what you learned can help you and others plan similar projects in the future. Help the movement learn from your experience by answering the following questions:

  • What worked well?
Given that the photowalks were carried out mostly on weekends and selected weekdays gave us the opportunity to have access to the necessary rural dwellers who accompanied us to the exact location of the rivers and lake. The selected days of photowalk ensured we met some community members in the rivers in order to capture the specific activities that are carried out there. The days were selected based on initial inquiries we made before commencing the project. Additionally, we made entry point visits to the rural stewards of some of the rivers, explaining our mission and obtaining permission for easy access to the rivers.
  • What did not work so well?
The supposed location of one of the rivers, oramiriukwa, turned out not to be correct. This resulted in additional travel days to different locations based on the received directions. Yet, we could not find the river in the recommended villages. Because of the project timeline, we could not continue with the search as advised by the rural dwellers. According to them, Oramiriukwa might be an unpopular river situated in one of the small communities in Imo State.
Aside from this, the set project timeline was not flexible to accommodate the available days of photographers resulting in some rescheduled days. And on such rescheduled days, we were sometimes disrupted by the unofficial sit-at-down in the state due to ethnic misunderstandings.
  • What would you do differently next time?
We would like to have a flexible project timeline such as a 3-month period which will accommodate the availability needs of participants. We would also like the 3-month period or timeline to be from the end of the dry season into the rainy season. This will help to capture and tell stories of the changes in the river in terms of the volume, turbidity, vegetation and human activities.
