Learning
editProjects do not always go according to plan. Sharing what you learned can help you and others plan similar projects in the future. Help the movement learn from your experience by answering the following questions:
- What worked well?
Photo walks: So many people had expressed to participate in the photo walks but we were only able to select some 30 people to embark on 3 photo walks. Our target was to upload 400 images but we ended up uploading 1,131 images. A whooping 731 more of our original target. This is a huge achievement.
On upload session; The upload session was successfully organized to guide participants through on how to upload images on Wikimedia commons for the contest. Those who were new were guided to create their user accounts at the workshop and to start uploading.
Regarding the Edit-a-thon challenge; A successful workshop was organized to train participants on how to edit on Wikipedia. Newbies who did not have wikipedia accounts were guided to create their accounts and to start editing. Participants competed and created a total 105 Dagbani Wikipedia Articles. 68 of these articles were developed to meet the standard of being accepted on the fountain tool.
- What did not work so well?
There was a delay in the grant approval and receipt of funds which compelled the extension of the photo contest period from February 1 - 28 2022 to then February 1 2022 - March 15 2022. There was a very low percentage of usage of images uploaded on Wikipedia projects. Only 2.39% images were used.
- What would you do differently next time?
We hope to work on the processes towards the approval and subsequent receipt of funds as early as possible in order to work within the given period without the need for extension which can affect the timing of other projects that we may be running.
Next time, we will focus on guiding participants to use more of the images uploaded during the contest to the corresponding Wikipedia articles, Wikidata items and lexemes.
