Did you meet your goals? Are you happy with how the project went?

Yes our goal was met. A total of three events were organized. We were able to increase content on Twi Wikipedia, English Wikipedia, Wiki Data and Wikimedia Commons. About 19 new editors were recruited through this project.But there is still more work to be done and we would keep encouraging participants to keep editing the Twi Wikipedia.

Projects do not always go according to plan. Sharing what you learned can help you and others plan similar projects in the future. Help the movement learn from your experience by answering the following questions:

Almost all participants found the content tranlsator tool very easy and simple to use.The few offline and online dictionaries we could afford and get helped in the translation process a lot. We were able to convince a few translators and Twi Teaching Assistants to join in the translation. Most of them did not have laptops so we made them do the translations on paper then we got other participants to help in uploading the translated articles online.

We had to consecutively postpone the project start date due to the long delay of grant approval and release. Hence some participants who initially expressed interest in the project lost interest and others traveled out of the country or to other parts of the region and hence were unable to participate in the project. We could not afford enough good dictionaries. And we tried to acquire an ICT lab from AITI-KACE so participants who do not have laptops could get computers to work with, however most of the computers at the lab we were provided with had very few fuctioning computers.

Next time, we would target tertiary level Twi students for this project.Also, we would try to acquire good dictionaries and a better furnished ICT lab. We would work at getting endorsement for the project from individuals and organizations interested in indigenous languages to attract more participants.

We collaborated with Linux Accra User Group to get the venue at AITI for free. funds budgeted for the venue was used to cover other costs incurred.

Through this project, we realized that many Ghanaians can speak Twi but only few can write well in Twi. The few who can write well in Twi were those who studied the language as a course at the Tertiary level and those who are translators and teachers of the language. It is very difficult to get the teachers and translators to volunteer their services because this is what they do for a living and most of them can barely make ends meet.
