Goals edit

Did you meet your goals? Are you happy with how the project went? Yes. We hosted 1 live editathon to celebrate International Women's Day, and 2 online editathons. Our live event was held with our partner Richmond Library, and all events were faciliated by our partner Wikimedia Australia, who did a fantastic job in training participants and post-event follow up. We had planned to hold the second and third events as live streaming events, but due to additional lockdowns in Melbourne we had to move these events to online. Due to the success of our International Women's Day Art+Feminism Edit-a-thon at Richmond library, we have been invited to return to the same venue for another live editathon booked for later this month (August), and to continue with regular programming. The live event was held just after another lockdown in Melbourne, so we all appreciated the opportunity to meet in real life and edit together. Our event included a wide array of editors, with some who were members of our organisation and a number of new faces. The new books and resources we were able to purchase and develop as a result of the grant greatly enhanced the experience and contribution of our editors on the day. The online events were more of a challenge, with smaller groups, as this was a new platform for us. However, those who attended were very dedicated and eager to learn more, with some returning to the second online event for additional training. The online events helped to solidify some new relationships and provide an opportunity for participants to feel a strong sense of satisfaction at publishing more edits and completing new articles, giving them confidence to continue editing at home and at future events.

Outcome edit

Please report on your original project targets. Please be sure to review and provide metrics required for Rapid Grants.

Target outcome Achieved outcome Explanation
Recruit new editors - we are slowly building our community of editors, but have lacked resources in the past to host consecutive events that capture the momentum of IWD. Target Number of total participants: 20. Target number of new participants:10. We recruited 10 new editors at the IWD event in March, some of whom were able to follow up and attend the later events. We recruited a further 3 new editors at the online Wiki Wednesday event in June, all of whom returned for the follow up session. We had a total of 28 editors participate in the program overall (across the three events), with about half from previous events, and half new editors.
Increase skills for existing editors - We hope to enhance the experience of our editors by enabling confidence and skills, and enjoyment of the event, and providing skills to encourage ongoing editing after the event. Our existing editors are now developing very strong skills, as evidenced by the 24 new articles created across the 3 events, and the positive feedback by the participants.
Add or improve content. Target number of articles created or improved:20. Target number of photos uploaded to Wikimedia Commons:15 We added 27 new Australian artists, curators and architects to Wikipedia, who now have pages of their own. We also focused on creating pages about Australian public galleries, which gave us the opportunity to add exhibitions and artworks by multiple artists, as well as strengthening internal links on Wikipedia via these renowned galleries. We created 13 pages on galleries and artist spaces in Australia through this focus. We also updated the list of Australian Women Artists and the Australian Feminist Art Timeline, further creating links and adding new artists to Wikipedia. We exceed our targets for participants overall, new editors and number of articles created or improved.

Learning edit

Projects do not always go according to plan. Sharing what you learned can help you and others plan similar projects in the future. Help the movement learn from your experience by answering the following questions:

  • What worked well? Live events continue to work best for us, in particular with new editors, who need a high level of support and one-on-one assistance. The enjoyment of the experience is enhanced in a live event. In particular for our organisation, if we can hold events in the library located above our archive, it helps us to utilise the Collection we have of information about women artists, in a dynamic and responsive fashion. The ongoing partnership we have with Richmond library has been enhanced, and we look forward to our next event later this month, at the invitation of the library. We have a number of participants who could not attend the last event, who are planning to participate.
  • What did not work so well? It was difficult to manage a range of skill levels at the online events, and those who needed on-on-one assistance tended to hold back from editing, preferring to listen and watch others. It was also difficult to have enough time for research at the online events. We were not able to upload any images to Wikimedia Commons. The restraints in managing many new editors meant there was insufficient time to do this.
  • What would you do differently next time? We are considering smaller groups for online sessions, or informal drop-in sessions for those who have been before and need follow-up assistance, or have started editing at home and have questions before they publish their edits.

Finances edit

Grant funds spent edit

Please describe how much grant money you spent for approved expenses, and tell us what you spent it on. Purchase of 3 copies "Know My Name", specialty publication by the National Gallery of Australia, 458 pages, full colour, Hardback $247 AUD. Postage was provided free of charge and we received a discount for multiple copies.

Printing of Hard Copy training materials $138 AUD. We spent more on this aspect of the project as planned, as we did not need to purchase the dongle for wifi access. Remuneration for scanning of archival materials $370. We spent more on this aspect of the project than planned, as we underestimated the amount of time required to research and scan resources. We were able to offset this cost as we were offered free space in the library for our event, saving the venue hire allocation of the budget.

Remaining funds edit

Do you have any remaining grant funds? No
