Goals edit

Did you meet your goals? Are you happy with how the project went?

The goal of this project was to co-facilitate Wikipedia Edit-a-thons at two academic conferences in order to improve representation of disciplinary knowledge and to coordinate outreach efforts to raise awareness about the CCCC Wikipedia Initiative. The CCCC Wikipedia Initiative is an effort to improve Wikipedia articles on topics of concern to member of the disciplinary organization Conference on College Composition and Communication (CCCC). The fundamental goal of holding two Edit-a-thon events at 2 academic conferences, Council of Writing Program Administrators (CWPA) and Feminisms and Rhetorics conferences (FemRhet) was successful. I am overall happy with how the project went though both events could have had better attendance and participation after the event.

Outcome edit

Please report on your original project targets.

. .
Target outcome Achieved outcome Explanation
Expand network of potential partners for the CCCC Wikipedia Initiative Y Attending and presenting at these two conferences allowed me to share information about the CCCC Wikipedia Initiative across multiple venues/formats. E-mailing disciplinary listservs before each conference, for instance, raised awareness of CCCC WI even for individuals not attending the conference. At both CWPA Conference and FemRhet conference, I was able to network and share information about CCCC WI both during and outside of the actual Edit-a-thon events. A web page associated with CCCC WI also provided outreach about the initiative (https://cccc.ncte.org/cccc/wikipedia-initiative/).
Increase awareness of Wikimedia projects among conference participants Y At both conferences, in addition to co-facilitating Edit-a-thons, I also presented my own research which deals with Wikimedia-related projects and Wiki Education. Additionally, each Edit-a-thon allowed my co-faciliators and I to share background information on Wikimedia projects which raises awareness among Edit-a-thon participants (n=24).
Recruit new editors Y 24 editors participated in the CWPA and FemRhet Edit-a-thons. At least 20 of these were new editors. The larger campaign CCCC WI now has 30 editors. See dashboards, for CWPAand for FemRhet

Learning edit

Projects do not always go according to plan. Sharing what you learned can help you and others plan similar projects in the future. Help the movement learn from your experience by answering the following questions:

  • What worked well? Organization of resources and actual events went very smoothly. Plenty of resources and people on hand to help participants.
  • What did not work so well? It continues to be a struggle to attract participants at these events. While we hit the low end of our target impact, I would have liked to have seen more participation. This may have been due to the timeframe of Edit-a-thon events - (one set in an 8am early session; one at the very end of the conference)
  • What would you do differently next time? More marketing and outreach in different/creative venues. I want to use social media more to attract participants during and beyond the event. I would also like to try to secure a more attractive spot in the conference schedules.
