Grants:Project/Rapid/Art+Feminism 2020 Pallant House Gallery Sarah Jackson/Report

Report accepted
This report for a Rapid Grant approved in FY 2017-18 has been reviewed and accepted by the Wikimedia Foundation.

Goals edit

Did you meet your goals? Are you happy with how the project went? Yes, we hit all but one of our goals. We hosted our first edit-a-thon and recruited 7 new editors on the day (along with two members of staff who are very interested in becoming Wikipedia editors although they were not able to take part on the day). It was an incredibly positive day and is certainly something that all staff who attended are keen to build on in the future.

Outcome edit

Please report on your original project targets.

Target outcome Achieved outcome Explanation
1 event 1 event
12 participants 5 participants (plus 4 members of staff) We did have 11 people booked on but several people cancelled the day before due to illness or other commitments.
6 new editors 7 new editors All five participants were new to editing Wikipedia, and 2 members of staff also took part.
24 articles created or improved (2 per person) 16 articles edited (more than two per person) Although we did not reach our numerical target, we did exceed the number of articles people worked on.

Learning edit

Projects do not always go according to plan. Sharing what you learned can help you and others plan similar projects in the future. Help the movement learn from your experience by answering the following questions:

  • What worked well?

This was a great opportunity for different departments (Communications, Public Programmes, Curatorial and the Library) within the Gallery to work together on an event that is totally new to us. Having our Librarian on hand with a selection of books from the art library was also a huge help as it provided plenty of good reference material for participants to use – the event has been a great way to promote our Reference Library as well! The participants were all very enthusiastic about taking part - and appreciative of the lunch we provided. They said the event left them feeling inspired and keen to take part in similar events.

The event took place on the same day as the keynote speech of our Radical Women Symposium, and we emailed the delegates specifically in advance to let them know about the edit-a-thon in the hope that some would be able to attend. Sadly, the few who did want to come ended up dropping out, but we still feel like pairing these two events sent a strong message about our commitment to promoting the work of underrepresented women artists.

  • What did not work so well?

We underestimated the amount of time discussion about Wikipedia’s ethos as well as explaining the nuts and bolts of editing would take. While this was all useful and interesting information (the participants were very engaged and asking questions throughout), we should perhaps be stricter on timings, or even simply factor this time into our schedule.

  • What would you do differently next time?

We had a lot of drop outs the day before, so we could consider trying a different time – it may be that evening session will attract more people, or even a younger audience (one of our key target audiences). We would also like to consider how to make this a regular event.

Finances edit

Grant funds spent edit

Please describe how much grant money you spent for approved expenses, and tell us what you spent it on. Lunch and refreshments for participants = GBP £56.25 Costs from publishing partner (travel and supply of books) = GBP £67.30 Social media advertising for the event = GBP £150 Room hire for event = GBP £330

We also asked for expenses for volunteers (estimated £20) but we had enough staff to cover the event without volunteers, as well as travel and subsistence for Art UK staff and Wikipedia staff, but did not receive invoices/receipts for these as they covered those costs themselves.

TOTAL = GBP £603.55

Remaining funds edit

Do you have any remaining grant funds?
