Goals

Did you meet your goals? Are you happy with how the project went? Yes we did. We had great, sucessful events targetting youth particpants, with a majority being female. The events coincided with the movement strategy global conversations and we took advantage of the edit-athon to introduce the new editors to the 8 recommendations and involve them in subsequent community Priorotization Meetings.

We also raised awareness about Wikipedia editing and the Afrocine Project and managed to get seasoned guest speakers to grace our closing ceremony. These included The Founder for Center for Media and Information Literacy in Kenya, Mr Wallace Gichuge and CEO Youth, Agenda Mr Kevin Keya.

We only had two experienced wikipedia editors; Teri Wanderi and myself. Coordinating the edit-a-thon personaly, helped enhance my leadership, mobilizing, event management and communication skills. Teri and Sean were happy to learn and experience their first local Wikipedia event and we resolved to work together and cooridnate the propritazation meetings. In terms of raising awareness of Afrocine projects in Kenya, we did this quite well by leveraging on social media to publicize our activities. We also reached out to local authorities mandated with developing matters film in the country like the Kenya Film Commission and the Kenya Film Classification Board.

Learning

Projects do not always go according to plan. Sharing what you learned can help you and others plan similar projects in the future. Help the movement learn from your experience by answering the following questions:

• What worked well? Coordination was really great. I owe this to delegating roles and assigning one of the new participants (Sean Obell) who showed interest in volunteering in the running of events as a Project Manager. He was quite helpful in following up with service providers and providing communication support to the participants and even setting up the virtual training and follow ups.
• What did not work so well? Lack of support from the experienced Wikipedians in the community almost dumped our spirits but thanks to my professional experience in managing events and training we did not have any gaps, everything worked out to perfection.

We almost overrun our expenses due to increased costs. We had not factored in the cost of mobile money transactions and the forex exchange rates.

We also had so many youth show interest to participate in the workshops than we could accommodate, mostly due to budget and also fear of exposure to COVID-19.

• What would you do differently next time?

Plan in advance. This will help bring more people on board, including external partners.

Finances

Grant funds spent

Please describe how much grant money you spent for approved expenses, and tell us what you spent it on.

We spent a total of Sh 129,226. Even though our approved total grant amount was Sh 134,479 ($1,228) the total cash credited in the account was ($1,218).I could only withdraw $1,200 due to the denominations that the respective ATM used at the time could dispense. After the currency conversion, we were left with a total Sh 129,600, owing largely to the Kenyan Shilling losing its value against the dollar in the year 2020.

The funds were spent to cater for expenses for our two in-person events and the virtual follow up after the edit-a-thon. These expenses included food and venue (Sh 51,400)Transport (Sh 18,000), Data (9,000), Banner (Sh 10,000), name tags (1,400), projector (Sh 7,000), Framed certificates (sh 12,500), photography (Sh 10,000), stationery (5,000)and other miscellaneous expenses like facemasks, program printing costs and mobile money transaction costs.

Do you have any remaining grant funds?

Remaining funds have been used or will be used for other approved mission-aligned activities. This use has been requested in writing and approved by WMF.

Yes, the $15.

I would like to use the ammount as a reimbursement to the $10 bank fees charged that saw the total grant ammount credited down to $1,218 and the rest to cover similar transaction costs in the pending grant for the Movement Strategy Discussions.

Anything else you want to share about your project?

We had a fruitful edit-a-thon and social media activities that gave exposure to the Wikimedia Community and Wikipedia Projects. The creative sector is such a big one in the country and has been touted as one of the major emerging frontiers that will create jobs for the youth and help tackle Kenya's ballooning youth unemployment rates.

It's therefore without doubt that the Afrocine Project in Kenya is a step in the right direction, and i would love to scale our project in 2021, hopefully, plan in advance and involve the respective film bodies in the country for a collaboration.
