Project Goal edit

What will be the outputs of your project and how will those outputs contribute to advancing a specific Movement Strategy Initiative

What specific Movement Strategy Initiative does your project focus on and why? Please select one of the initiatives described here
This project will focus on these initiatives; Invest in Skills and Leadership Development and Increase the Sustainability of Our Movement using 31. Global approach for local skill development - gathering data, matching peers, mentorship, recognition and Increased awareness about the Wikimedia Movement

The university communities are intellectual communities that can enhance the goals and objectives of the Wikimedia 2030 movement strategy. However, only few universities out of hundreds knew about Wikimedia projects. According to report on Wikimedia User Group Nigeria metapage, only five universities currently have Wikimedia communities out of one hundred and seventy universities in Nigeria. The goal of this project is to raise awareness and create an organised platform where Wikimedia editors in the Nigerian Universities can grow sustainably and inclusively which will not only make them to be able to face the challenges of today and tomorrow but also collaborately strive for knowledge equity and knowledge as a service. We will work base on the following to:

  • Establish a methodology that maps assets and needs and generates aggregated data for deploying leadership and skills development initiatives based on the real needs of the university communities
  • Establish a service that facilitates connecting/matching peers across the Movement for teaching and learning skills (e.g. peer-learning, networking, and pooling of information from partners and allies).
  • Encourage a diversity of methods, including training, mentoring, consulting, online learning, peer-to-peer support, and events that will not only boost the existing Editors capacities in the universities but also attract new editors
  • Increase the number and diversity of University students and staff on the Wikimedia projects and create/improve Wikimedia contents
  • Raise awareness about the Wikimedia Movement, its values, achievements and projects in six Nigerian universities
  • For sustainability, a platform will be formulated where all the Wikimedia Editors in Nigerian Universities will be able to interact, collaborate, identify problems and solutions to the growth of Wikimedia editors in the university communities .

At the end of the project, we will be able to prepare the above strategies, implement effective leadership plan and sustainable platform which will not only boost the capacity of Wikimedia Editors in the Nigerian universities system but also set the pace for the generational students and staff who might join the system in the future.

Project Background edit

When do you intend to begin this project and when will it be completed?
March 1st, 2023
Where will your project activities be happening? Online and offline
Are you collaborating with other communities or affiliates on this project? Please provide details of how partners intend to work together to achieve the project goal.
Yes, we are collaborating with the students Union and the staff's Union. The closest organisations to the university system are the students Union and the Staff's union. The unions in the six selected universities have been contacted and they are ready to give their full support to enhance the short and long term goals of the project. The unions will be responsible for providing venue for our different offline gatherings on campuses, reaching out to students and staff for the program and also assist in research implementation.

Also, we will work with Yoruba, Hausa, Igbo and Fulfulde Wikimedia User Group for the translation and sharing of our final report.

What specific challenge will your project be aiming to solve? And what opportunities do you plan to take advantage of to solve the problem?
  • Identify the challenges and barriers hindering skills and leadership development within the University communities in order to address them
  • Raise general awareness about the Wikimedia projects in universities where the activities are not known and to also increase the movement activities on open source and free knowledge projects.
  • To retain and regain the interest of university staff and students who have left the projects due to lack of skills and or understanding of the Wikimedia projects
  • Tackle the negative perception about Wikipedia through outreach activities by reaching out to University staff and students who have no idea of what the projects are all about and to understands the objections that are keeping them away from editing and participating in the Wikimedia movement
Does this project aim to apply one of the examples shared in the call for grants and if so which one?
Yes, this project has applied this example, Skill Development Needs Assessment.

Project Activities edit

What specific activities will be carried out during this project? Please describe the specific activities that will be carried out during this project.
  • Identifying the targeted University communities: The team will come together to map out six different universities that have little or no awareness about Wikimedia foundation projects. Series of meetings will be conducted via online platforms using zoom.
  • Pre-Program Survey: After identifying the targeted universities, we will then start with surveying each university community in order to gather data which will help us understand the state of the problem and the needs of the task ahead. The team will be assisted by the students Union and staff union in each university.
  • Defining and analyzing the data: Finding out the root causes of the problems through analysis of the collected data in order to develop the best methods of addressing the problems and analyze the objection that is keeping them away, what motivation they need and how we can tackle the problem and stop it from occurring in the future.
  • Engagement: After the data collected have been analysed. We will engage the six university communities in both physical and online presentation where they will be enlightened and trained on mode of operation of Wikimedia projects
  • Post-Program Survey: Another survey will be sent to identify and recruit potential volunteers (students and staff) who are interested in broadening their editing skills from these university communities and integrate them into the platform of like minds where they will be actively mentored and engaged.
  • Prioritizing: Once the needs have been identified, we will conduct a general meeting with each university community and a follow-up discussions OnWiki to agree on the chosen priorities. The priorities will be added to our final report for implementation process.
  • Sharing: The surveys, reports needs and priorities will not only be shared on a local level among all the Languages user groups in Nigeria but also within a broader “global mapping” to help represent our region’s specific needs among the rest of the Wikimedia communities.

  •   Strong support The Movement Strategy Implementation Plan for Nigerian Universities is an ambitious and laudable project that should be lauded for its focus on investing in skills and leadership development within the university communities of Nigeria. With only a handful of universities currently engaged with Wikimedia projects, the goal of raising awareness and creating a sustainable platform for growth and inclusivity is of paramount importance.

The proposed methodology of mapping assets and needs, and generating aggregated data to inform leadership and skills development initiatives, is a sound and data-driven approach that will ensure the real needs of these communities are met. Additionally, the establishment of a service that facilitates peer-to-peer connections and learning opportunities will serve to enhance the existing capacities of editors and attract new ones, diversifying the pool of knowledge and expertise within the Wikimedia movement. Raising awareness about the values, achievements, and projects of the Wikimedia movement within Nigerian universities is also a crucial aspect of this project. By increasing the number and diversity of students and staff engaged with these projects, and creating and improving Wikimedia content, we can work towards the goal of knowledge equity and knowledge as a service. Also, as experienced Wikipedia editors and volunteers, the three individuals proposing this project have a proven track record of successful project delivery through the recruitment of numerous editors. Their expertise and dedication to the Wikimedia movement make them well-suited to lead this important initiative, and I have every confidence in their ability to deliver on the ambitious goals of the "Movement Strategy Implementation Plan for Nigerian Universities". Their extensive experience as Wikipedia editors and volunteers demonstrates their commitment to knowledge equity and the dissemination of information to broad and diverse audiences. Furthermore, their successful execution of previous projects attests to their organization and execution skills, which will undoubtedly be invaluable assets in the successful delivery of this project. In short, I trust that with these capable and experienced individuals at the helm, the "Movement Strategy Implementation Plan for Nigerian Universities" will be a resounding success and a valuable contribution to the broader goals of the Wikimedia 2030 movement strategy. Finally, the formulation of a platform for interaction, collaboration, and problem-solving among Wikimedia editors in the Nigerian university system will ensure the sustainability and continuity of this project well into the future. It is my firm belief that the "Movement Strategy Implementation Plan for Nigerian Universities" is an essential and worthy endeavor that deserves to be funded. Taoheedah (talk) 18:38, 8 January 2023 (UTC)

  •   Strong support I endorse this Movement Strategy Implementation Plan for Nigerian Universities because the project seeks to invest in skills and leadership development within the intellectual communities of Nigerian universities. As a proponent of knowledge equity and the democratization of information, I believe that this project has the potential to be a transformative force in the pursuit of these noble goals. Tesleemah (talk) 19:20, 8 January 2023 (UTC)

  •   Strong supportSince Wikimedia foundation is a collaborative and community effort, the ability of the project to create a platform for all the Editors in Nigeria universities is a good idea. I believe the the platform will bring about what is currently missing in the university communities which are ;
  1. sustainability and expansion of the project: The project will withstand the test of time because of the community that is attached to it and according to the proposal, before 2030 all the Wikimedia editors in Nigeria Universities will be subsumed under the platform.
  2. supporting and investing in people’s needs: According to the proposal, it will be supporting both the new Editors and long-time contributors in the universities
  3. interaction with like minds
  4. connection building
  5. create a soft landing for new editors who just join the system. Abdulrahman0044 (talk) 23:18, 8 January 2023 (UTC)
