What activities have you completed to produce this draft plan? For Phase 1, we contracted with Cornelius Kibelka to engage in needs-finding research about the Wikimedia & Education community. As part of the project, Cornelius participated in the design of the Future of Wikimedia & Education track at the EduWiki Conference in Belgrade, Serbia, in May 2023. He also attended the conference and facilitated two sessions on the topic. To ensure more diversity of voices, he also conducted 32 individual interviews with Wikimedians involved in education. He summarized these findings in the report Hubs/Ongoing/Toward a theory of change for Wikimedia & Education (mid-2023), and presented his findings at Zoom-based Wikipedia & Education User Group Open Meeting in July 2023. Members of Wiki Education and the Wikipedia & Education User Group also presented on the Phase 1 research outcomes at Wikimania 2023.

For Phase 2, we worked collaboratively with the Wikipedia & Education User Group and the Wikimedia Foundation's Education Team to develop an appropriately-scoped Theory of Change document. We contracted with a researcher, Rocío Aravena, and a facilitator, Bukola James, who carried out the Phase 2 research. Bukola conducted focus groups with 19 participants and Rocío's literature review involved 67 selected publications. Through these methods, the two created a draft Theory of Changed. Based on input from Wikipedia & Education User Group board members, Wiki Education Foundation staff, and Wikimedia Foundation Education staff, Rocío and Bukola revised the report, which they then published on Meta: Hubs/Ongoing/Education Theory of Change (February 2024). They shared their findings at a Zoom-based Wikipedia & Education User Group EduWiki Knowledge Showcase in February 2024.

Remaining funds

Do you have any remaining grant funds?

No, in fact, we overspent a bit. In particular, we ended up paying more money in fees to Upwork to process payments to our Phase 2 contractors than expected. We also had failed to budget for software in Phase 2. We were slightly underspent in Phase 1, which enabled us to apply that money toward some of these costs. The rests were absorbed by Wiki Education's general operating budget.
