Research proposal edit

Description edit

Description of the proposed project, including aims and approach. Be sure to clearly state the problem, why it is important, why previous approaches (if any) have been insufficient, and your methods to address it.

Translation is currently done by both humans and machine translators. One of the machine translators is called Pertalan Kontèn in Javanese Wikipedia. This machine has had a significant impact on adding content to the Javanese Wikipedia. However, it cannot guarantee the quality of the article. Hence, the focus of this research is to find out the quality of the content translation, particularly the translation of the cultural terms. In this study, the data were words, phrases, or sentences in an English Feng Shui article, which were translated into Javanese. The data collection technique was done by doing sampling on the criteria of all words that contain cultural terms. After that, it is followed by data analysis using Spradley's theory of domain, taxonomic, and component analysis to determine the accuracy of the translation of these cultural terms. Moreover, the result of the hypothesis is that translation errors were found due to lack of words, cultural differences, and differences in the meaning.

Since translation matters in term of writing articles in Wikipedia, we try to make a research about machine translation in Wikipedia from English to Javanese. As most of Javanese has no English skill, so we would like to ease the distribution of information from English Wikipedia to Javanese Wikipedia. Further, as a Javanese speaker, we were also helped by the linkage of the Content Translation contained in the Javanese Wikipedia. However, the translation still has many shortcomings, so it is necessary to re-check the quality. Particularly, the focus of the research is the translation of cultural terms. As the cultural terms might be an image or representative of a certain language or culture, the translation supposed to be straightly correct or at least close to the original definition. In this case, we try to check the machine translation in Wikipedia whether it can translate the cultural term correctly or not along with the analysis. Moreover, this research has significant benefits, both practical and theoretical. The practical benefit of this research is that it can add insight and knowledge about the quality of translation of cultural terms, especially in the Javanese Wikipedia. Practically, it can be used as a literature review for further research and to increase knowledge about Feng Shui culture. In addition, it can also be used as data in artificial intelligence to improve the quality of cultural terms in the Pertalan Kontèn.

Impact edit

Address the impact and relevance to the Wikimedia projects, including the degree to which the research will address the 2030 Wikimedia Strategic Direction and/or support the work of Wikimedia user groups, affiliates, and developer communities. If your work relates to knowledge gaps, please directly relate it to the knowledge gaps taxonomy.

This research will has two significant impacts which are Improve User Experience and Evaluate, Iterate, and Adapt, referring to the 2030 Wikimedia Strategic Direction. As we evaluate the quality of machine translation of cultural terms, this process will indirectly improve user experience in the future. Hence, it matters to improve the quality of machine translation to translate the cultural terms found in the article. In addition, insights or idea about cultural terms translation can be added as a knowledge and as agate for any other following researches.

Dissemination edit

Plans for dissemination.

The research will be published in two ways. First, we presented in the international conference about Wikipedia in Hong Kong Baptist University entitled Understanding Wikipedia’s Dark Matter, Translation and Multilingual Practice in the World's Largest Online Encyclopedia.

Second, we will publish it in research gate and let people know about this matter so that more people will get more awareness regarding the importance of cultural terms translation and the lack of translating ability of AI.
