1. Briefly describe how your strategies and activities proposed were implemented and if any changes to what was proposed are worth highlighting?

Our strategies and proposed activities were implemented through some critical actions, which included effective management of projects by competent and experienced members of our community, communication flow, good financial practices, partnerships with mission-aligned organizations, and the involvement and participation of members of our community in our programs. We created an enabling environment that connected our volunteers to our strategic plan for 2022 and our mission, and this helped them understand why they should be involved and effectively participate in our programs. Some of the challenges facing our contributors include incessant IP blocking. We worked closely with the Yoruba Wikipedia administrator to grant local IP block exemptions for our volunteers. We also ensure that new participants create their accounts prior to the training dates. We document our activities on Meta-wiki and review them via monthly strategic meetings.

2. Were there any strategies or approaches that you feel are being effective in achieving your goals?

Yes, we would like to highlight some strategies and approaches that are effective in achieving our goals. These strategies and approaches included the following
  • We'd like to emphasize the widespread fact that the general support grant from the WMF worked well for our group. Members of our group did not apply for a rapid grant because we already had a general support grant approved, and they were happy to work with the user group instead of having to apply for a rapid grant to do an individual project.
  • Collaborations with other established user groups locally (Wikimedia Nigeria, Igbo Wikimedians User *Group) and internationally (Wikimedia UK, Deoband Wikimedia Community)
  • Partnership with the International Center for Yoruba Arts and Culture
  • Yoruba Indigenous Vocation (Oral Knowledge) audiovisual recordings
  • Teamwork
  • Registration as a non-profit organization in Nigeria.

3. What challenges or obstacles have you encountered so far?

The only challenge we faced was the impractical deadline that we set for our audiovisual recordings of Yoruba indigenous vocations (oral knowledge). We earlier thought that we could complete the project in one month, but we exceeded the deadline because of rainfall.
We evaluated the challenges facing our volunteers via a survey. Some of the challenges experienced by our volunteer community includes

  • Failure to attend on-site training
  • Time management in relation to work
  • lack of tools such as laptops

Our strategies and activities are helping our community grow through the various engagements of participants, which have impacted their engagement with the Yoruba Wikimedia community. This is evident in our blog post that featured two new members of our community recruited via our strategy and activities who have continued to contribute 10 months after they were engaged in our activities.

The growth of content and contributors who are native speakers has increased exponentially as a result of our strategy and activities.
