Proposal edit

1. What is the overall vision of your organization and how does this proposal contribute to this? How does this proposal connect to past work and learning?

Our mission is to support and promote free access to knowledge, work with volunteers across the country, partner with governmental and non-governmental organizations, cultural and educational sectors and other mission-aligned groups to make knowledge available for free access.

Wikimedia Nigeria is committed to the ideal of a world in which every single human being can freely share in the sum of all knowledge and we believe that free access to knowledge is a fundamental right.

2. What is the change that you are trying to bring about and why is this important?

Nigeria is the most diverse country in Africa in terms of population, ethnicity, language, culture, and lifestyles. In spite of this large population and diversity, Nigeria is underrepresented on Wikimedia projects in terms of contents and contributors. Recently, there is a surge in the Wikimedia related activities in the country which require a need for sustainability. This proposal aims at sustaining the various strategic projects and successes recorded by the Wikimedia community in Nigeria over the years and to address likely challenges facing Wikimedia volunteers in Nigeria in line with our strategic objectives to support volunteers and promote free access to knowledge via Wikipedia and other sister’s projects such as Wikidata and Wikimedia Commons. We want to better support volunteers in Nigeria in 2022 and recruit diverse contributors to various projects run by the Wikimedia Foundation and enrich Wikimedia projects with diverse contents relating to the Nigeria people, culture, and oral traditions.
