What are the main challenges you are trying to solve and your proposed solution?
- Nigeria is the most diverse country in Africa in terms of population, ethnicity, language, culture, and lifestyles. In spite of this large population and diversity, Nigeria is underrepresented on Wikimedia projects in terms of contents and contributors. Recently, there is a surge in the Wikimedia related activities in the country which require a need for sustainability. This proposal aims at sustaining the various strategic projects and successes recorded by the Wikimedia community in Nigeria over the years and to address likely challenges facing Wikimedia volunteers in Nigeria in line with our strategic objectives to support volunteers and promote free access to knowledge via Wikipedia and other sister’s projects such as Wikidata and Wikimedia Commons.
We want to better support volunteers in Nigeria in 2022 and recruit diverse contributors to various projects run by the Wikimedia Foundation and enrich Wikimedia projects with diverse contents relating to the Nigeria people, culture, and oral traditions.
What is the main objective of your proposal?

- Add N100 audiovisuals of oral history to Wikimedia commons, use them in over 500, Wikipedia articles in at least 10 languages.

Describe your main strategies to achieve this objective and the main activities you will be developing as part of these strategies.
- Contents generations
Campaigns - We plan to participate in community driven international campaigns and contests such as Wiki Loves Africa, Wiki Loves Earth, WikiGap, WPWP, 1lib1ref, Wiki Loves Monuments. We will engage at least 50 professional photographers. To do these, we will work with cultural heritage organizations such as the National Commission for Museums and Monuments, National Tourism Development Corporation and other mission-aligned organizations.
Local contents drive - We plan to organize a contents drive to create articles on the English Wikipedia, Yoruba Wikipedia, Igbo Wikipedia, and Hausa Wikipedia.
GLAM – Oral history documentation is one of the most successful projects run by Wikimedia Nigeria Foundation. 100 Audiovisuals will be recorded, uploaded to Wikimedia Commons, Wikitongues, the U.S. Library of Congress, and the Internet Archives will host our documented materials in perpetuity.
Edit-a-thons – We will organize monthly edit-a-thons to generate content on Wikipedia, Wikimedia Commons and Wikidata.
2. Capacity Building and Community Support – We will train people on how to contribute to the various projects run by the Wikimedia Foundation such as Wikipedia, Wikidata, and Wikimedia Commons. Participants will also be trained on how to sustain partnership, build community, plan conferences, event planning, grant-making and reporting. We will support community members who have limited resources to contribute to Wikimedia projects such as providing internet data, small routers and fund small projects or initiatives with a maximum budget of USD 1000.
3. WikiNaija- This is a monthly meet-up to that will be organised to discuss among our members ongoing issues, new findings, supports and also to invite experts to our community to share with us on how we could be a better community and also learn from their successes. We plan to organize 12 episodes of this meeting.
4. Advocacy Wiki4NaijaWomen: This is an online advocacy initiative designed to bring attention to the state of articles about Women on Wikipedia.
MybeautifulAfricanPlaces: This is an online advocacy aimed at bringing attention of people to beautiful places in Nigeria and Africa at large by using a collection of photos submitted during the previous Wiki Loves Africa, Wiki Loves Monuments etc
Wiki in school: We plan to run a pilot education program in one of the Nigerian universities. We have met with the management of the Lagos State University on this project.

- The Wikimedia Nigeria Foundation is an open movement for diverse people in Nigeria. This proposal has no discrimination on the basis of age, gender, color, geographic location, sexual orientation. Anyone who is passionate about free access to knowledge is welcome to join any of our activities.
Sexual orientation – We have no discrimination about sexual orientations. Members of the LGBT community are allowed to join us if they find any of the activities interesting.
Age – There are no age restrictions to participate in any of our activities. We welcome participation from people of different age classes.
Geography – People can join from different parts of Nigeria. We currently have hubs and clubs in many parts of Nigeria. They could also join remotely online.
Socioeconomic status – People of any class are welcome to participate in our activities. Employed and unemployed people are allowed to join us and no prior experience with Wikimedia projects is required.
Strategy to continue engage with participants
- Wiki Fan Clubs and Hub – We have Wiki Fan Clubs and Hubs in some parts of Nigeria. Students who participate in any of our activities will be linked to the fan club in their school or in a school close to them. Non-students would be linked to hubs in their geographical location.
- Engagement and Building Capacity for youth-focused organization:
- We plan to train the staff members of some youth-focused organization who will in turn serve as trainers and mentors for new volunteers. Also, we plan to train staff members of interested members of partners e.g. governmental agencies, embassies, private sectors etc on how to use Wikipedia and its sister projects.
- Meetup – There would be a monthly meetup with a mix of new and established editors and each month will have its theme and activities tailored towards understanding the challenges of new editors, and improve their works. Each month, the most positive and active editors will be appreciated with merchandise.

- We will be working with the African Women in Media to train female journalists and women in the media sector as part of our advocacy efforts to bridge the gender gap on Wikipedia. African Women in Media will be responsible for the invitation of the participants to the training, management of the participants, provide data support for the participants and gift items for the best three participants.
- We will work with the Lagos State University to train hundreds of students on how to contribute to Wikimedia projects. Lagos State University will be responsible for managing the students participation, provide training halls and facilities and certificate of participation to the participants after completion.
We will partner with the Nigerian Tourism Development Corporation (NTDC), and the National Commission for Museums on Wiki Loves X projects. They will issue photographers’ letters to restricted areas during the photo contests..

- Our community is very familiar with the Universal Code of Conducts and the Friendly Space Policy. We will dedicate one of the monthly editions of our Naija Office Hours to talk about the UCOC and the Friendly Space Policy. Some of the highlights will includes the behavior that are expected from every community members, where to fill a report and so on. We will invite a WMF from the T&S to speak at the event.
