Part 1 Understanding your work edit

1. Briefly describe how your strategies and activities proposed were implemented and if any changes to what was proposed are worth highlighting?

The most important was finalizing the Helsinki rephotography and related student projects. The second important target was to start European heritage days / Wiki Loves Monuments collaboration with the Ministry of environment and new regional museums. The third was to improve the internal structures of Wikimedia Finland.

Things that were important but continuing from previous years were gender gap-related events in March and April, such as Women's day events and Punaisten linkkien naiset monthly competition. (Women in Red). These competitions were multilingual. We also added more language support for Sami languages and Swedish to our Wiki Loves Monuments competition. We also made some smaller content-related events, such as copying and wikifying previously off-wiki translated Wikibooks text to the Skolt Sami incubator and organizing a Science night workshop.

We also focused on improving the internal structures of Wikimedia Finland. Most notably, we organized storage space, occupational health care, etc., and implemented the meeting improvements we planned in 2021—created a better infrastructure for student projects in terms of data replication from Wikimedia Commons, Ajapaik, and Europeana. Wikimedia Finland and AvoinGlam also planned how collaboration would strategically work. Wikimedia Finland also had an intern.

On the professional side, Wikimedia Finland has a seat at Finto (Finnish ontology service by National Library Finland) Steering group.

The difference in plans was that we decided to cancel the planned rephoto campaign in spring in Estonia because of the fallback of COVID-19, and organizers needed to simplify the requirements.

Another change was that we had roughly 20000€ available from the city of Helsinki grant instead of the estimated 12000€ in spring 2022.

2. Were there any strategies or approaches that you feel are being effective in achieving your goals?

We think there was significant success in collaborating with organizations. The work with European Heritage days simplified our Wiki Loves Monuments as we were able to utilize its theme for our communication. We also got help from the Ministry of the environment for communication. It helps with opening the archives and databases under open licenses. Smaller museums get lists of relevant heritage sites that need local knowledge. Photowalks also have done fascinating outreach work for people who aren't already Wikipedians.

In Helsinki, we have created communication channels with partners through which we can get participants in photography events. We also noted that communicating rephotography doesn't feel like spamming compared to informing competitions like WLM.

Student collaboration was a considerable success. We worked on intellectually exciting things like IIIF image servers, machine learning, machine translation, and database replication. Both thesis authors, Siru and Henry, received the best grade (5) from their educational institutions.

Seat in the Finto steering group is important to us as Finto is extensively linked to Wikidata. They are creating openly licensed vocabularies and running open API and SPARQL services for their data, and they are improving services Sami languages support. Including Sami languages in YSO ontology would mean that Finto could be a source for CC0-licensed translations in the future.

Kimmo from Wikimedia Finland and Susanna from AvoinGLAM gave a presentation for the Ministry of Environment RYKJ team, which is planning its new API. Our presentation was about our recent use cases and licensing needs.

Wikimedia Finland joined Wikimedia EU, and we feel it is an essential initiative for enhancing the movement work inside the European Union.

Finnish Wikipedia was in the news related to 20 years birthday. Timo Jyrinki, was in TV news in the early days of Finnish-language Wikipedia. Helsinki rephotography has also been in the news.

3. What challenges or obstacles have you encountered so far?

Some of our key partners or their families in Estonia were sick during COVID-19, which caused a need to simplify things. Also, in Finland, we had time to time too many things to do simultaneously, and the practical solution would be that there would be better task management or better overall selection of what Wikimedia Finland is doing at a given time.

We also maintain the Wiki Loves Monuments website in six different languages: Finnish, English, Swedish, Northern Sami, Inari Sami, and Skolt Sami. Multiple languages lead us to avoid significant changes because some languages are ones we don't know how to write ourselves.

Some of the essential translations are also missing. For example, UploadWizard in Commons, WikiShootMe user interface translations, Creative Commons licenses, object names in Wikidata, OpenStreetMap map translations. This leads to mixed language, which causes restrictions on how and where the content can be used.

In photowalks, it has been a persistent problem that Wikimedia Commons upload tools and Ajapaik rephoto app has been only for Android as ⅓ of the participants are iPhone users. It is also a problem with school groups as we should be able to support all participants.

4. Please describe how different communities are participating and being informed about your work.

Inside Finnish Wikipedia, Wikimedia Suomi informs about its events on the current affairs page and in the village pump. Our primary communication page on social networks (for Wikipedians) is the Wikipedian ystävät (Friends of Wikipedia) Facebook group, and Wikimedia Finlands own a page. For Wiki Loves Monuments, we have a domain (https://wlm.wikimedia.fi). We are also writing to This Month in GLAM and our blog.

In the Ympäristötiede Wikipediaan workshop at Science night, 3 Finnish Wikipedia community members and 3 Wikimedia Finlands core members (Kimmo, Jaakko, and Hanna) for tutoring the participants.

In the Women's day Weekly competition, the Punaisten linkkien naiset monthly competition, and the Public art project. Punaisten linkkien naiset were promoted in-wiki and Facebook.

For Photowalks and photographic events, we inform them of the off-wiki community using large Facebook groups such as Helsinki vanhoissa kuvissa or the association of Landscape photographers. We are using Eventbrite for event registration, and there are followers through that platform.

One significant visibility towards newspapers is that the Ministry of Environment and Finnish National Board of Antiquities include Wiki Loves Monuments events in their communication channels and social media sites. Also, National Library's Finna service has been active in telling about the event.

In photographic events and work, the most significant contribution from the on-wiki community has been that they gave input on how photos should be automatically categorized, what images we should mass import from Finna, and what kind of tools they would need. In Wikimedia Commons, there has also been an active categorization of uploaded images. In the Ajapaik community, there has been a significant effort for geotagging photos and adding annotations, and to a lesser extent, for taking rephotographs. Ajapaik members also started monthly online meetings.

5. Please share reflections on how your efforts are helping to engage participants and/or build content, particularly for underrepresented groups.

In the first part of 2022, Wikimedia Finland editors participated in a community discussion related to Deadnames. We also wrote an article on Deadname, and other non-Wikimedia Finland members wrote articles on transmen and transwomen.

With people from IT-kouluttajat and OKFI we wikified and copied the previously translated "Etäopetuksen näytönpaikka" manual to the northern Sami Wikibooks incubator as part of open education week.

In the Women's day event, we had a weekly competition. In Punaisten linkkien naiset monthly competition, we had a workshop led by Jenni Janakka. Kimmo and Johanna advised online, and Hanna gave onsite tutoring.

Yupik participated in a Roma edithaton and Celtic Knot Wikimedia Language Conference Online 2022. She has also done Sami translations to Wikidata. Yupik has also participated in Finnish ontology service Finto steering group meetings where she has pushed Sami support forward.

Kulttuurinavigaattori traveled to Benin, met local Wikipedians there, and when he was back in Finland, he gave presentations to Finnish Wikipedians.

In March, Wikimedia Finland organized a weekly competition in Finnish Wikipedia, Ukraine, and Russia.

As part of media tracking, we noticed that some images in Commons were from a cross-wiki spamming effort by an amateur cartoonist with partial nudity or upskirt drawings of minors. We cleaned images from articles. Images were deleted via community discussion, and Sock puppets used to add images were banned.

6. In your application, you outlined your learning priorities. What have you learned so far about these areas during this period?

On the tech side, we also learned a lot about Postgresql replication, modern filesystems, and docker installs. We also got some great usability comments in photo walks and caught bugs that could not have easily been noticed without the diversity of users. Students thought also the compensation system was fair.

In Finnish Wikipedia, there has been unknown how it should handle GDRP requests. As part of the deadname discussion, we learned that Wikipedia is considered a mass media, like a newspaper. It would mean that GDPR does not handle the content of Wikipedia but by criminal law.

We also learned that getting useful images using a drone is relatively easy. We also learned that the new drone law, which came into effect at the beginning of 2022, means that drones weighing over 900g require complex permits and are most likely out of our scope.

Organizationally we learned that we should still try to keep the focus on what we are doing and give time for people to focus on what they are doing.

Another thing was that insurances for organizations in Finland are very much focused on the idea that organizations have physical offices. Their offers were less valuable if all the employees were remote working.

7. What are the next steps and opportunities you’ll be focusing on for the second half of your work?

Our main autumn target is Wiki Loves Monuments, photowalks, workshop with the Finnish Cancer Patients Association. We have one ongoing student project with students of the University of Tartu. In the Flutter rephoto app, we would need to finalize Wikimedia Commons uploads backend support. In Wikidata Birthday we have Wikimedia Commons SDC and one SPARQL presentation. In autumn meeting we have panel discussion with guest speakers. The proposed topic is fake news and trustworthiness of Wikipedia.

9. Are you having any difficulties collecting data to measure your results?

Yes, the editor retention metrics was badly defined. It would have needed information about participants who have registered to our events in previous years and would be continuing now. However, the definition is too wide that we would get the users. It should be more specific such as users from WLM etc.

10. Are you collaborating and sharing learning with Wikimedia affiliates or community members?

We are sharing learning with Wikimedia Eesti users in rephotography and programming. Most common way is using slack, but we are also publishing code to github etc. We are also doing webinars where we present our learnings. In Finland we are sharing our experiences in slack where is also joint members from AvoinGLAM and OKFI.
