Proposal edit

1. What is the overall vision of your organization and how does this proposal contribute to this? How does this proposal connect to past work and learning?

We aim at creating awareness, promoting, and sharing free knowledge, especially in Swahili language to make it accessible to people.

2. What is the change that you are trying to bring about and why is this important?

Gender Gap Over the course of years, we have noticed a huge gender gap in participation within the Arusha community. Out of eight participants in the community contributing to Wikimedia projects only 1 is identified as a female while the rest are male. Also, statistics show that only 18.3% of the content in all Wikimedia projects is of women, and women Wikimedia contributors are only 15%. Realizing this gender gap we aim at minimizing the gap by allowing more female participants to participate. Have equal participation of men and women in the community through participation in Wikipedia, Wikimedia Commons, and Wikidata.

Statistics in contributing to Swahili Wikipedia from [1] show that over the past year there have been 55K edits, 797 new registered users, and an average of 46 active editors. Comparing the statistics with English Wikipedia with 63 M edits, 1M new registered users, and an average of 40K active editors over the past year. Looking at the statistics, we have realized that there is a very huge gap in contribution to Swahili Wikipedia. To address this gap, the Wikimedians of Arusha will aim to bridge the gap through contributing African content to Swahili Wikipedia. Also creating awareness, empowering more Swahili language knowledge producers, and sharing free knowledge in the Swahili language.

Tanzania has more than 26 regions, but only less than 5 regions are aware of the Wikimedia movement and contributing to a few projects. To address this issue the Wikimedians of Arusha aims at training more people who will be able to share their knowledge and skills with the new community members across the other regions in Tanzania specifically those in the Nothern regions of the country. The trained members will be empowered by the community with sub-grants to implement creative projects in Arusha and neighboring regions of Arusha in the Northern part of Tanzania.

Goals

Goal 1: Increase quality content coverage Goal 2: Sustaining the growth of the community Goal 3: Capacity development Goal 4: Closing the Gender gap

Strategies

Goal 1

  • Organizing events that focus on widening the coverage of quality and underrepresented content in Swahili to attract readership.
  • Collaborating with other organizations in order to get access to underrepresented knowledge resources.
  • Promoting the increased coverage to attract readership

Goal 2

  • Organizing events that motivate editors to get involved beyond the event.
  • Organizing new activities on projects that attract and retain the participation of community members.
  • Establishing collaboration with interested other organizations or groups that may enlarge the community.

Goal 3

  • Organizing training the trainers' programs for the community members.
  • Creating tutorials for the community members.
  • Empowering skilled and competent members to take leadership roles.
  • Learning from more experienced Wiki communities.

Goal 4

  • Organizing women-led programs to mitigate and address the gender gap.
  • Ensuring representation of women on Wikimedia platforms.
  • Empowering women to come up with project ideas to bridge the gender content gap

We do this by focusing on

  • Community development
  • Gender equity
  • Inclusion
  • Quality content creation

Impact

  • The gender gap in representation and content is progressively closing.
  • A huge number of people are trained and are confident to train other new volunteers.
  • Under-represented topics about Africa are shared through Wikimedia projects in good quality.
  • A strong and sustainable community

3. Describe your main approaches or strategies to achieve these changes and why you think they will be effective.

Goal 1 Strategies Organizing events that focus on widening the coverage of quality and underrepresented content in Swahili to attract readership. Collaborating with other organizations in order to get access to underrepresented knowledge resources. Promoting the increased coverage to attract readership

Goal 2 Strategies Organizing events that motivate editors to get involved beyond the event. Organizing new activities on projects that attract and retain the participation of community members. Establishing collaboration with interested other organizations or groups that may enlarge the community.

Goal 3 Strategies Organizing training the trainers' programs for the community members. Creating tutorials for the community members. Empowering skilled and competent members to take leadership roles. Learning from more experienced Wiki communities.

Goal 4 Strategies Organizing women-led programs to mitigate and address the gender gap. Ensuring representation of women on Wikimedia platforms. Empowering women to come up with project ideas to bridge the gender content gap

4. What are the activities you will be developing and delivering as part of these approaches or strategies?

Goal 1 Activities The community will participate in the following projects, campaigns, photo walks, and contests to ensure there is quality content produced in Wikimedia projects. The community will participate in different campaigns/contests as part of the user retention strategy. Different community members have an interest in contributing to different topics, so participating in different projects with different content coverage provides a wide range of choices of what projects they can participate in even after the implementation of the proposal. The proposed activities are: Swahili Month (New project) - July 2022 Wikipedia Page Wanting Photos Arusha- August 2022 WikiVibrance – International Youth Day (September 2022 Months of African Cinema - October 2022 WikiVibrance – African Youth Month (November 2022 1lib1ref - (January 2023) Arts & Folklore-( Feb- 2023) WikiGap – (March 2023) WikiforHumanRightsCampaign (April – 2023) Photowalk – Hospitals & Buildings May 2023 Africa WikiChallenge - June 2023 Photowalk – Public and Private Educational Institutions

Goal 2 Activities

Annual Community Meeting (December 2022): Annual meeting to discuss the progress of the Arusha Community, identifying opportunities and challenges, and setting the Community goals and strategies to achieve them. Subgrants program: This program aims to fund the community members with good project ideas in the community to run the projects in order to allow for awareness and participation in the Wikimedia movement. The trained community members will be empowered to share their knowledge and skills with the new community members across the Nothern part of Tanzania. The trained members will be empowered by the community with sub-grants to implement creative projects in Arusha and neighboring regions of Arusha in the Northern part of Tanzania.

Goal 3 Activities

Training the Trainers program: A training program for Wikipedia, Wikimedia Commons, Wikidata trainers who will be able to help out new volunteers joining the movement from the Northern part of Tanzania. The target number of participants is 20. The training program will focus on intensive training in Wikipedia, Wikimedia Commons, and Wikidata.

Goal 4 Activities

Women in Wiki Training: Considering the gender gap we have noticed in the community over a number of years, this program focuses to involve women both in leadership and participation to encourage and empower women to contribute in Wikipedia, Wikimedia Commons, and Wikidata. This serves as a strategy to ensure maximum participation of Women in the community. Write for African Women project (new project): This is a new project that aims to bring an equal number of men and women together to write about African women in Swahili Wikipedia. This project allows for both genders to work as a single team to write about women. The number of contents contributed to Swahili Wikipedia relating to women is minimal and thus the project aims to maximize the number of content contributed about women.

Education, Advocacy, Human Rights, Diversity

10. Will your work focus on involving participants from any underrepresented communities? Please note, we had previously asked about inclusion and diversity in terms of CONTENTS, in this question we are asking about the diversity of PARTICIPANTS. Select up to THREE that most apply to your work.

Gender Identity, Geographic , Linguistic / Language

11. What are your strategies for engaging participants, particularly those that currently are non-Wikimedia?

With the growth in the use of social media platforms in Tanzania, we plan to use our community social media channels to reach more people in the northern regions of Tanzania who are not aware of the Wikimedia movement. We will be able to create awareness to non-Wikimedians who are interested and will be welcomed with open hands to join the movement.

We also plan to create a website for the community where people will be able to learn more about the community’s participation in the Wikimedia movement. Here they will be able to see scheduled events that will be taking place in the community and they will be allowed to join.

We have a proposed activity of training trainers. These trainers will provide support beyond the implementation of the proposal to new editors to ensure we have a huge number of editors retained. All the participants will be asked to willingly join the community social media channels to ensure that they are supported and mentored by experienced editors.

12. In what ways are you actively seeking to contribute towards creating a safer, supportive, more equitable environment for participants and promoting the UCOC and Friendly Space Policy, and/or equivalent local policies and processes?

This policy will be shared with the community members to be aware of it. We will ensure that all the activities abide to UCOC and Friendly Space Policy

13. Do you have plans to work with Wikimedia communities, groups, or affiliates in your country, or in other countries, to implement this proposal?

Yes

13.1 If yes, please tell us about these connections online and offline and how you have let Wikimedia communities know about this proposal.

Community members are informed about the proposal in the main community social media channel (WhatsApp). We will have a community discussion in April and community members will get to hear more about the proposal. Community members always have a chance to provide feedback and ideas on projects that they find interesting and are of impact to them. Most of the programs identified in this proposal were suggested by the community members.

14. Will you be working with other external, non-Wikimedian partners to implement this proposal?

Yes

14.1 Please describe these partnerships and what motivates the potential partner to be part of the proposal and how they add value to your work.

Media partners - We will seek media partners who will support us to amplify the work we will be doing.

Dunia Salama Foundation Through this partnership we will be able to reach more youth in the Nothern regions of Tanzania.

Alliance France -Through this partnership we will be able to get support in training spaces.

15. How do you hope to sustain or expand the work carried out in this proposal after the grant?

Through the capacity development programs, we will be able to skill up trainers with the necessary skills who will be able to spread the word and skills to other people across the Northern regions in Tanzania to ensure a sustainable community. Community discussions will help us identify the challenges, opportunities, future goals and develop strategies for the years ahead to achieve the community goals. Participating in a variety of different programs exposes the participants to different areas of their interest, which allows them to find the area of their interest which they will be happy to contribute to after the grant

16. What kind of risks do you anticipate and how would you mitigate these. This can include factors such as external/contextual issues that may affect implementation, as well as internal issues, such as governance/leadership changes.

Personnel risks: The paid personnel to help with running the program may leave to another region of the country far from the northern regions leaving the community with insufficient staff to accomplish the tasks. We mitigate this risk with documentation of tasks and procedures to make it easier for replacement.

Digital divide risks: Participants may lack the devices to fully participate in the programs. We plan to mitigate this risk by renting affordable devices that could be used by participants in the programs.

17. In what ways do you think your proposal most contributes to the Movement Strategy 2030 recommendations. Select a maximum of three options that most apply.

Increase the Sustainability of Our Movement, Ensure Equity in Decision-making, Invest in Skills and Leadership Development

18. Please state if your organization or group has a Strategic Plan that can help us further understand your proposal. You can also upload it here.
