  • Amount spent: 13175 CAD

Part 1 Understanding your work

edit

1. Briefly describe how your proposed activities and strategies were implemented.

Wiki Wednesdays' project goals were to demonstrate to Canadian cultural workers how important Wikimedia & Wiki data editing and learning are to discoverability on the internet because Google uses Wikidata as its primary source for structured data or linked open data (LOD) that drives its search engine optimization algorithms.

This project gathered Wiki-GLAM (Galleries, Libraries, Archives, and Museums) workers in online training sessions to provide examples of how to create data visualizations of Canadian culture.

The goals of this series funded by the WMF GS were to continue peer learning sessions using this case study and other relevant case studies for Canadian GLAM to demonstrate the importance of Linked Open Data (LOD), online collections, discoverability, wiki data editing, data visualizations and the relevance of the wiki commons.

1. September 6 12 PM - 1 PM - Kickoff Launch Session

2. October 4 12 PM - 1 PM - Wiki-Wednesdays GLAM: SEO & Wikidata with Inga Petri, Strategic Moves

3. November 1 12 PM - 1 PM - South Asian Artists in Canada: Exploring Cultural Works & Digital Empowerment with Indu Adiyat and Dr. Beenish Tahir

4. December 6 - 12 PM - 1 PM ET- Jason Evans - How would a Wikimedian in Residence help your cultural organization?

5. January 10 12 PM - 1 PM (Pacific Time) - Online Collections – Increasing Education & Outreach through Wikidata & the WikiCommons: Partnered Session with BC Museums Association Members

6. February 7 12 PM - 1 PM - Raising the Profile & Discoverability of Metis artists with Tracey-Mae Chambers & George Simard

We had set up the webinars to run on Zoom and EventBrite from September to December 2023. Our initial marketing person had put together the behind-the-scenes administration for the series, including analytics.

The project manager became concerned about the terms of service changes with EventBrite and the technology integration between Mailchimp and the newsletter design, so a more streamlined technology plan occurred from November 2023 until February 2024, so the project budget could be maintained and the work completed.

2. Were there any strategies or approaches that you felt were effective in achieving your goals?

Partnerships:

  • Canada Council for the Arts: Secured additional funds to develop a comprehensive toolkit for visual artists and art galleries. This also included a membership with Galleries Ontario, enabling us to promote the toolkit through their newsletter to our target audience.
  • BC Museums Association: Built on our initial WMF Rapid Grant partnership to administer and implement a successful January webinar. This event reached BCMA members and other participants across Canada, enhancing our outreach.

Expert guest speakers:

  • For example, our technical advisor facilitated a guest speaker from the UK for our December webinar. This presentation provided valuable insights into the potential role of Wikimedians in Residence in Canada, enriching our project team's and participants' understanding.
  • Mutliple other guest speakers offered insights from a range of perspectives, keeping the audience engaged for return visits.

These strategic partnerships and expert contributions were instrumental in achieving our project's objectives, leading to successful webinars and the widespread dissemination of our toolkit.

3. Would you say that your project had any innovations? Are there things that you did very differently than you have seen them done by others?

Integration of Visualization Tools: In the September workshop, Navino Evans of Histropedia developed a new visualization using the Sobey Art Award as a case study. This approach demonstrated how emerging artists' online discoverability could be enhanced through linking to Wikidata, providing a new method for artists to gain visibility.

Exploration of Linked Open Data: The October workshop addressed the specific challenges of Linked Open Data for the LGBTQ+ community. This session highlighted innovative strategies for overcoming these challenges, including creating more inclusive data representation in digital platforms.

Mobile Wikimedian in Residence: In our December webinar, we explored the novel concept of a mobile Wikimedian in Residence. This role, which is adaptable and not tied to a single institution, offers flexibility and supports the Canadian WikiGLAM movement in a new and impactful way.

4. Please describe how different communities participated and/or were informed about your work.

We received funding from the Canada Council for the Arts to contract specialized services in the area of SEO and wikidata editing tool kits, South Asian visual art culture and themes, as well as Indigenous content.

This additional funding from the Canada Council for the Arts also provided funding so the Project Manager could secure two Indigenous advisor for the project who were practising Metis artists involved with the Kooshkopayiw/The Awakening - Metis Arts Council of Ontario.

This Arts Council is part of the Cultural Commission of the Metis Nation of Ontario. Kooshkopayiw is planning on two years of regional outreach to Metis artists in Ontario to increase their profile, discoverability and exhibits in regional museums, art galleries, etc.

The final webinar of Series 2 - WikiWednesdays - Raising the Profile & Discoverability of Metis artists Tickets, Wed, Feb 7, 2024 at 12:00 PM | Eventbrite, has had one of highest registration levels of any webinar in the Series (currently at 37 as January 27, 2024).

Navino Evans, co-producer and Technical Advisor to the WikiWednesday webinar series has provided a mapping tool/query where we can test the impact of our communications, outreach and editing in this area - https://w.wiki/8$vF

5. Documentation of your impact. Please use the two spaces below to share files and links that help tell your story and impact. This can be documentation that shows your results through testimonies, videos, sound files, images (photos and infographics, etc.) social media posts, dashboards, etc.

6. To what extent do you agree with the following statements regarding the work carried out with the support of this Fund? You can choose “not applicable” if your work does not relate to these goals.

Our efforts during the Fund period have helped to...
A. Bring in participants from underrepresented groups Agree
B. Create a more inclusive and connected culture in our community Agree
C. Develop content about underrepresented topics/groups Agree
D. Develop content from underrepresented perspectives Agree
E. Encourage the retention of editors Agree
F. Encourage the retention of organizers Agree
G. Increased participants' feelings of belonging and connection to the movement. Agree

7. Is there anything else you would like to share about how your efforts helped to bring in participants and/or build out content, particularly for underrepresented groups?

When we were working with Tracey Mae Chambers, to increase her knowledge of the Wiki community as a Métis artist, she got to a certain point, using the Tool kit funded by the Canada Council for the Arts.

However, when she wanted to create a Wikipedia article, we encountered difficulties and could not obtain enough regional support to create a successful article for her.

The project manager has received two pieces of technical advice in completing this work, and it remains a 'stuck' incomplete item until we secure more financial support or volunteers.

Part 2: Your main learning

edit

8. In your application, you outlined your learning priorities. What did you learn about these areas during this period?

In our original application, we stated that our team would like to continue to show the impact of wikidata edits and their connections to GLAM institutions in Canada through knowledge graphs, mixed media online learning (Power Point presentations, online demonstrations, videos, etc).

We started to build these resources so they are available on YouTube, Google drive and at this URL - https://victoriastasiuk.ca/digital-transformation/

9. Did anything unexpected or surprising happen when implementing your activities?

In our final webinar of the series, the guest speakers were funded by the Canada Council for the Arts, we faced some technical glitches where our team had to think very quickly to ensure that the participants where able to attend and that everyone could hear George Simard.

10. How do you hope to use this learning? For instance, do you have any new priorities, ideas for activities, or goals for the future?

Our preliminary feedback on Series 2 has indicated that our target audiences would like to see a Series 3 structured around small peer learning sessions.

11. If you were sitting with a friend to tell them one thing about your work during this fund, what would it be (think of inspiring or fascinating moments, tough challenges, interesting anecdotes, or anything that feels important to you)?

It was rewarding to see individual visual artists register for sessions and become interested in how wikidata could increase their online presence.

12. Please share resources that would be useful to share with other Wikimedia organizations so that they can learn from, adapt or build upon your work. For instance, guides, training material, presentations, work processes, or any other material the team has created to document and transfer knowledge about your work and can be useful for others. Please share any specific resources that you are creating, adapting/contextualizing in ways that are unique to your context (i.e. training material).

Part 3: Metrics

edit

13a. Open and additional metrics data

Open Metrics
Open Metrics Description Target Results Comments Methodology
Wikidata property ID creation for Canadian GLAM organizations Facilitate the creation of a Wikidata ID property for the institution to allow them to add unique identifiers for artists, works or other entities stored in their own collection databases.

This will be completed after confirming the institution has this kind of data available, and is convinced of the benefits of engaging with Wikidata (example for creating this for McMIchael Canadian Art Collection and Art Gallery of Hamilton, perhaps for the December 2023 meetup or follow-up email)

3 0 We attempted to build stronger relations with an art museum in Canada to fulfil this objective. However, we could not sustain an ongoing participant from this target group. In future grant applications, we may have other options or contacts to fulfil this objective.

We are interested in demonstrating how art museums could perform batch uploads, however the level of awareness in Canada remains low.

Towards this goal, Victoria Stasiuk and Navino Evans delivered an online webinar to the BC Museums Association indicating the depth and robust online collections information available in the United States and the United Kingdom in January 2024.

In addition to this, Jason Evans, presented a webinar in December 2023 outlining the European and United Kingdom advantages of having a Wikimedian in Residence as well as performing Wikidata and Wiki Commons uploads.

Direct communications with participants and online monitoring of new Wikidata properties.
Collection matching for Canadian GLAM organizations Artists, works or other entities stored in their own collections are uniquely matched to Wikidata items.

Perform mass imports of IDs once matching is complete, provided a Wikidata property has been created.

2 0 Reliably matching content from external sources is mostly dependent on having an ID Property in place, so this was not completed as a result of missing metric 1 above. We did manage to demonstrate the utility of collection matching to several organizations, and had feedback that it was something that would be considered Please see above
Reuse of Wikimedia content or processes For institutions who have matched their content to Wikidata items, they now have easy access to Wikipedia articles, media from Commons and other Wikimedia resources.

This is used in some way either internally, on social media or on their own website, for example: Sharing/embedding Wikidata query visualizations, or using them to analyze their content Providing related content for artists or works in their collection Using Wikimedia Commons for structured data tagging of images

2 4 Although no collection matching occurred, we were still able to meet this objective by using data visualizations based on Wikidata which were of interest to the target GLAM audience.

1. Sobey Art Award winners 2. Métis artists who were born in Canada/North America.

Need to insert links to show how GLAM organizations shared these links - VS to update this area showing, Work in Culture, Galleries Ontario, social media shares - twitter, LInkedIn, Instagram, Youtube
Import some data into Wikidata Use data in their collections to create references statements on Wikidata. This can be done using mass imports if matching is already complete 1 2 We have entered “2” for this metric as data was uploaded to Wikidata by participants in two separate subject areas.

1. Sobey Art Award winners import from National Gallery of Canada website for visualization created by Histropedia.

2. Métis artists in Canada map visualization.

This was carried out by providing participants with pre-prepared data work sheets which were researched and created prior to the webinars

e.g. Sobey Art Awards worksheet - https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1dRk7-OS9XmtQkHEy44vLR1rotj3EfVLoZOnWyRBIS5A/edit?usp=sharing).

Wikimedian in Residence It would be ideal if we are able to communicate the benefits of engaging with Wikimedia enough to facilitate the adoption of a Wikimedia in residence. 1 0 This was intended as an ambitious long shot metric. Although our sessions did not directly lead to a new Wikimedian in Residence, multiple organizations are now aware of what a WiR is and how they would benefit from one. his was a theme running through our webinars, further supported by having Jason Evans as a guest presenter for the December 2023 session, a former WiR and current Open Data officer for the National Library of Wales, outlining the European and United Kingdom advantages of having a Wikimedian in Residence as well as performing Wikidata and Wiki Commons uploads

Core Metrics Summary
Core metrics Description Target Results Comments Methodology
Number of participants How many unique people will participate throughout the course of the online webinars (September 2023 to February 2024) 50 97 Workshop engagement - 163 registrations, 97 participants EventBrite, LinkedIn registration information and then verified by zoom records.
Number of editors People who have made one edit on wikidata 30 10 As noted elsewhere, we often lacked the time to complete editing activities because of the need to cater for newbies in each session with general introductions to Wikidata concepts, and times slots for guest speakers. Editing practical segments in online webinars with pre-prepared data sheets.
Number of organizers
Number of new content contributions per Wikimedia project
Wikimedia Project Description Target Results Comments Methodology
Wikidata One batch uploads for cultural organizations and/or individual edits. 1000 0 No batch uploads were completed because organisations were not ready to proceed with a data or image import strategy due to concerns about licensing as well as generally being completely new to the concept and needing more time to discuss internally and develop a plan.

We aborted plans to teach individual participants about batch uploads as there was often no time to fully get used to manual editing (a prerequisite for learning to do it on mass)
