Part 1 Understanding your work edit

1. Briefly describe how your proposed activities and strategies were implemented.

There are several areas where it has become apparent that we are scratching the surface in terms of Digital Literacy for GLAM (Galleries, Libraries, Archives and Museums) in Canada and there is more work to be done to expand and enhance, that is build on our work completed so far.

In this report, and future WMF grant applications, our team would like to explore the following themes and action plans:

1) Female LGTQPlus Visual artists - what can be done in Canada to raise their profile and success through wikidata, Wikipedia and Wikicommons?

2) Newcomer Visual artist culture and themes - Our team has some strengths in some newcomer areas - South Asian, Caribbean/African, and Ukrainian.

3) Indigenous Artists in Canada - The Canada Council for the Arts has funded our work with two Metis Indigenous Advisors who will be guest speakers at our last webinar in this series in February 2024.

2. Were there any strategies or approaches that you felt were effective in achieving your goals?

Three of our team attended the North American Wikimedia Foundation Conference held in Toronto November 11-12th 2023 - Victoria Stasiuk, Rhonda Yearwood and Supriya Vijay Mitnasala.

While at this event Rhonda Yearwood met Sherry L Antoine, Executive Director of Afro Crowd.org and several others involved in the Black/African Wiki movement. On January 18th Victoria Stasiuk and Rhonda Yearwood met with Sherry to explore how Rhonda can work with Afro Crowd resources to enhance editing and outreach activities for Black History and Black Canadian Artists.

We have created a google drive that is accessible for past participants and future GLAM participants where we document outcomes and key content items. Here we keep the content of past presentations, newsletters and a tool kit created for Art Galleries and visual artists.

3. Would you say that your project had any innovations? Are there things that you did very differently than you have seen them done by others?

1. Finding the best technology platforms and tools to use to promote the webinar series to GLAM organizations and GLAM workers. The regional committee has asked our project team to find the best way to reach out and keep in contact with GLAM sector people who register, participate or might be interested in the webinar series resources.

We obtained some funding from WMF and the Canada Council to address this first project development area.

a) Initially, a marketing team support person recommended Mailchimp and Canva could be used in combination. Midway through the program, the Project Manager noticed that these two platforms were no longer compatible. Unfortunately, the marketing team member had to redo work from one platform to another and this had to be charged to the WMF budget.

We will further explore this area in our final report.

2. Finding the best balance of team support for the webinar series based on the budget provided.

Throughout the project management period, we identified resources in the project team that we would like to be able to use to enhance communications, outreach, content development and archiving of the webinar series recordings and resources.

c) Videography editing, storage and broadcasting of the recordings/team training, etc. that could be valuable in the outreach, communications and action plans with GLAM organizations and workers. Initially, the project plan was to use Vimeo editing services and perhaps a local editing studio provided by the innovation/entrepreneurial ecosystem in the Niagara Region. Once the project manager identified that this initial technology solution was problematic from a time/cost bandwidth perspective inquiries were made amongst the local innovation/entrepreneurial ecosystem to find a new video editing software system (https://www.capcut.com/) - that was easier to use on the desktop rather than the cloud.

4. Please describe how different communities participated and/or were informed about your work.

We received funding from the Canada Council to contract specialized services in the area of SEO and wikidata editing tool kits, South Asian visual art culture and themes, as well as Indigenous content. a) Based on the volume of Truth and Reconciliation, repatriation and changes to protocols to respond to Canada becoming a signatories nation to the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples it was challenging to approach this area when recent government actions in 2021 and 2023 have meant that this is an evolving and constantly changing area for GLAM in Canada. Reference

b) Within this Canadian context, the Project Manager eventually secured two Indigenous advisors for the project who were practising Metis artists involved with the Kooshkopayiw/The Awakening - Metis Arts Council of Ontario. This Arts Council is part of the Cultural Commission of the Metis Nation of Ontario. Kooshkopayiw is planning on two years of regional outreach to Metis artists in Ontario to increase their profile, discoverability and exhibits in regional museums, art galleries, etc. The final webinar of Series 2 - WikiWednesdays - Raising the Profile & Discoverability of Metis artists Tickets, Wed, Feb 7, 2024 at 12:00 PM | Eventbrite, has had one of highest registration levels of any webinar in the Series (currently at 37 as January 27, 2024). Navino Evans, co-producer and Technical Advisor to the WikiWednesday webinar series has provided a mapping tool/query where we can test the impact of our communications, outreach and editing in this area - https://w.wiki/8$vF

Part 3: Metrics edit

13a. Open and additional metrics data

Open Metrics
Open Metrics Description Target Results Comments Methodology
Wikidata property ID creation for Canadian GLAM organizations Facilitate the creation of a Wikidata ID property for the institution to allow them to add unique identifiers for artists, works or other entities stored in their own collection databases.

This will be completed after confirming the institution has this kind of data available, and is convinced of the benefits of engaging with Wikidata (example for creating this for McMIchael Canadian Art Collection and Art Gallery of Hamilton, perhaps for the December 2023 meetup or follow-up email)

3 0 We attempted to build stronger relations with an art museum in Canada to fulfil this objective. However, we could not sustain an ongoing participant from this target group. In future grant applications, we may have other options or contacts to fulfil this objective.

We are interested in demonstrating how art museums could perform batch uploads, however the level of awareness in Canada remains low.

Towards this goal, Victoria Stasiuk and Navino Evans delivered an online webinar to the BC Museums Association indicating the depth and robust online collections information available in the United States and the United Kingdom in January 2024.

In addition to this, Jason Evans, presented a webinar in December 2023 outlining the European and United Kingdom advantages of having a Wikimedian in Residence as well as performing Wikidata and Wiki Commons uploads.

Direct communications with participants and online monitoring of new Wikidata properties.
Collection matching for Canadian GLAM organizations Artists, works or other entities stored in their own collections are uniquely matched to Wikidata items.

Perform mass imports of IDs once matching is complete, provided a Wikidata property has been created.

2 0 As noted above, we were unable to achieve this metric. Please see above
Reuse of Wikimedia content or processes For institutions who have matched their content to Wikidata items, they now have easy access to Wikipedia articles, media from Commons and other Wikimedia resources.

This is used in some way either internally, on social media or on their own website, for example: Sharing/embedding Wikidata query visualizations, or using them to analyze their content Providing related content for artists or works in their collection Using Wikimedia Commons for structured data tagging of images

2 4 1. Sobey Art Award winners

2. Métis artists who were born in Canada/North America.

Need to insert links to show how GLAM organizations shared these links - VS to update this area showing, Work in Culture, Galleries Ontario, social media shares - twitter, LInkedIn, Instagram, Youtube
Import some data into Wikidata Use data in their collections to create references statements on Wikidata. This can be done using mass imports if matching is already complete 1 2 Examples -

1. Sobey Art Award winners import from National Gallery of Canada website for visualization created by Histropedia.

2. Métis artists in Canada map visualization.

Wikimedian in Residence It would be ideal if we are able to communicate the benefits of engaging with Wikimedia enough to facilitate the adoption of a Wikimedia in residence. 1 0 In addition to this, Jason Evans, presented a webinar in December 2023 outlining the European and United Kingdom advantages of having a Wikimedian in Residence as well as performing Wikidata and Wiki Commons uploads.
