- Name of Organization: Wiki Wake Up Afrique
- Title of Proposal: Wiki Wake Up Afrique 2022
- Amount awarded: 15368.52 USD, 9662700 XOF
- Amount spent: 9670960.5 XOF
Part 1 Understanding your work
edit1. Briefly describe how your proposed activities and strategies were implemented.
- We had contacted contributors in countries that did not yet have a user group. These are Togo, Niger, Burkina Faso, Central African Republic, Gabon, Senegal and Madagascar. The Comoros Islands, the Mauritius Islands, and the Republic of the Congo
At the level of each country, at least one or two people are identified and maintained as representatives. It then systematically becomes a co-organizer after a series of meetings and training sessions. Weekly or periodic training workshops are regularly organized, in addition to a few face-to-face workshops. This is the case in Senegal, Niger and Burkina Faso.
For the most part we do online workshops for the community. We create small whatsapp groups to discuss how people want to join the community and we empower one or two people for community mobilization in each country. For a first online meeting we give them an introduction to Wikipedia and its sister projects. Depending on the needs expressed, we discuss with those in charge and we send them the means they lack to motivate them and relieve their difficulties if these people express them to us. To make them autonomous and more responsible, we share with them the work before , the work during and the work after to enable them to understand their level of responsibility in the work to be done. We teach them how to report, how to mobilize the community and how to interact with it. We teach them things to avoid doing them for them and make them more independent. We also support them in leading on-site and online workshops for their community, which allows them to feel close to their community. And finally we lead them to consider the creation of user groups in these countries.
2. Were there any strategies or approaches that you felt were effective in achieving your goals?
- Yes some strategies have worked. This is for example
The fact of making resources available to certain communities to relieve certain difficulties related to travel and internet connection costs helps to keep them motivated. Teaching them how to mobilize the community, how to report and also allowing them to do training for contributors allows them to better involve the communities. The resources made available to them for photographic hunts in their localities gives them the motivation to go and do more photos for their communities. Make discover and motivate to participate in international events and meetings around the wikimedia movement. This allowed Senegal to participate in Wikindaba 2022 in Kigali and Burkina in the French-speaking wiki convention in 2022 in Paris. For 2023, the Central African Republic and Senegal have obtained the scholarship to participate for the first time in Wikimanais 2023 and will jointly present the Wiki wake up Africa initiative at Wikimania 2023.
3. Would you say that your project had any innovations? Are there things that you did very differently than you have seen them done by others?
- In implementing our activities, we have worked to involve underrepresented groups. This is the organization of the gender gap that we organized with the Burkina Faso community partially supported by Wiki Wake Up Africa funds. Similarly, with the community of Senegal, we organized and financially supported the celebration of the 10th anniversary of Wikidata in 2022 for librarians, archivists, documentalists through a face-to-face workshop.
Francophone Contribution Month 2023 in Niger, Wiki Loves Africa 2023 in Senegal, Niger, Madagascar, Central African Republic Francophone Contribution Month 2023 in Niger, Madagascar, Central African Republic wiki Loves Earth 2023 in Niger, Madagascar, in the Central African Republic. World Earth Day in Niger with photographic outings in 2023 and photographic nettles in the Central African Republic.
4. Please describe how different communities participated and/or were informed about your work.
- In the implementation of the project several means are used to inform the community to participate.
These are direct contacts with knowledge, the use of digital channels of Wiki Wake Up Afrique (Facebook, Twitter, telegram group and whatsapp) Our exchanges are based on meetings, online sessions as well as monthly activity reports published on the project's meta page.
5. Documentation of your impact. Please use the two spaces below to share files and links that help tell your story and impact. This can be documentation that shows your results through testimonies, videos, sound files, images (photos and infographics, etc.) social media posts, dashboards, etc.

6. To what extent do you agree with the following statements regarding the work carried out with the support of this Fund? You can choose “not applicable” if your work does not relate to these goals.
A. Bring in participants from underrepresented groups | Strongly agree |
B. Create a more inclusive and connected culture in our community | Strongly agree |
C. Develop content about underrepresented topics/groups | Agree |
D. Develop content from underrepresented perspectives | Strongly agree |
E. Encourage the retention of editors | Strongly agree |
F. Encourage the retention of organizers | Strongly agree |
G. Increased participants' feelings of belonging and connection to the movement. | Agree |
7. Is there anything else you would like to share about how your efforts helped to bring in participants and/or build out content, particularly for underrepresented groups?
- According to our methodology, women represent the majority at a rate of 4/5 in the construction sector. As for geography, the photowalks have allowed us to explore areas that are very remote from urban centers, particularly in the Central African Republic, Niger, and Madagascar.
Part 2: Your main learning
edit8. In your application, you outlined your learning priorities. What did you learn about these areas during this period?
During the implementation of this project, we learned many lessons including: Human resources management Project management and Wikimedia for new communities; The importance of activity reports and accountability: Online and on-site community management; The need to have a strategic plan for at least 3 years in accordance with the strategic vision 2030 wikimedia Several requests to create user groups in the pages are already being created and will be submitted as soon as a community is ready. Among the meta pages being created, these are: Wikimedia Community User Group Niger, Wikimedia Community User Group Senegal, Wikimedia Community User Group Madagascar, Wikimedia Community User Group Burkina-Faso, Wikimedia Community User Group in CAR Every day, this project continues to teach us more through the difficulties we overcome as well as the challenges to be met.
9. Did anything unexpected or surprising happen when implementing your activities?
Currently, we are amazed by the ease with which our beneficiaries are embracing Wikimedia projects and movements. This is evident in their growing ability to be self-sufficient. Moreover, certain communities have become increasingly motivated in establishing their own User Groups.
10. How do you hope to use this learning? For instance, do you have any new priorities, ideas for activities, or goals for the future?
Find new strategies to bring in communities with which we have been in contact for several months and who are reluctant to join the movement. These include the Republic of Congo, Republic of Mauritius, Republic of Comoros, Republic of Guinea-Bissau, etc. recruit more people to be involved within the different communities that we had managed to contact. Continue to carry out several activities around the various annual campaigns of the Wikimedia movement. These include the Francophone contribution month, African contribution month, the various anniversaries of wikimedia projects. Sustain face-to-face activities within each community. Make sure to help the communities to create their first User group in at least 4 countries Organize and/or make trips to certain countries to support certain communities there. Seek partners to support on-site and online communities to alleviate some logistical challenges. Also go to meet English-speaking communities in Africa to extend the scope of the project. Work on drafting the strategic plan for at least 3 years in line with the wikimedia 2030 strategic vision.
11. If you were sitting with a friend to tell them one thing about your work during this fund, what would it be (think of inspiring or fascinating moments, tough challenges, interesting anecdotes, or anything that feels important to you)?
For an objective of three countries at the start, the project impacts seven countries, four of which are led by women, a very rare fact in the Wikimedia movement, especially in communities in Africa. Furthermore, the presence of the Wikimedia movement for the first time in history in these countries and the creation of the first user groups under construction and some requests for which are being validated because it is thanks to this initiative that Wikipedia and the other projects are known in these countries.
12. Please share resources that would be useful to share with other Wikimedia organizations so that they can learn from, adapt or build upon your work. For instance, guides, training material, presentations, work processes, or any other material the team has created to document and transfer knowledge about your work and can be useful for others. Please share any specific resources that you are creating, adapting/contextualizing in ways that are unique to your context (i.e. training material).
