Part 1 Understanding your work edit

1. Briefly describe how your proposed activities and strategies were implemented.

As mentioned in the proposal project page we said we would start by creating promotional campaigns across Wikimedia sister projects to create awareness among Wikimedians, the initial plan was changed as this time we started by conducting research on Wikimedia and on other major languages to see how we plan the promotional campaign, how we can engage participants from different communities by looking at the results of the research, in that case, we started by research, followed by campaign, training (online and offline) and Wikimedia Pages Wanting Pages at last.

2. Were there any strategies or approaches that you felt were effective in achieving your goals?

All our strategies and approaches are effective, as it helps efficiently in training participants from different communities, the strategies helped in uploading different languages audios, with effective impact in using the audio in relevant Wikimedia sister projects.

3. Would you say that your project had any innovations? Are there things that you did very differently than you have seen them done by others?

Yes there is several innovations we that we had so far, we have engaged our selves in using different applications softwares related sound, studio technical activities for the first time, using Wikimedia tool called Spell4Wiki and lingua libre among our selves, participants and editors.

4. Please describe how different communities participated and/or were informed about your work.

Four local language communities have participated in WikiSound Audio Speaks Campaign, they participated in acquiring skills and techniques related to audio recording, conversion, uploading and linking. Moreover we have held online meet ups in different local languages communities to support language users in understanding trainings from local mentors coming from them, speaking their language.

7. Is there anything else you would like to share about how your efforts helped to bring in participants and/or build out content, particularly for underrepresented groups?

First of all, We have worked tirelessly in organising meetings with local mentors, carried out training for them, then we moved with obtaining research data and information to help us in implementing the the strategic promotional campaign awareness for WikiSound Audio Speaks Campaign followed by launching and more trainings for participants in recruiting new members and mentoring existing editors in the activities of sound.

9. Did anything unexpected or surprising happen when implementing your activities?

Yes many users and editors from different languages and communities are showing interest, but due to the project scope limitations, and is a pilot projects, we have limited resources to support our project course by engaging every community. We have to exercise patience to grow gradually.

10. How do you hope to use this learning? For instance, do you have any new priorities, ideas for activities, or goals for the future?

Yes we have other priorities in the future; seeing many people and communities showing interest we would like to expand our scope to engaged many communities. Also there are a lot of things needed for different communities to acquire skills and experience about sound, so we would prioritise many trainings in different communities in their respective language for a comprehensive understanding. Moreover, we would create video tutorials in different languages.

11. If you were sitting with a friend to tell them one thing about your work during this fund, what would it be (think of inspiring or fascinating moments, tough challenges, interesting anecdotes, or anything that feels important to you)?

I would tell him that Sound activities require too much time, training and resources for editors to acquire the technical skills required for audio production.

In Nigeria and outside we have got recognition in Wikimedia movement, but we need to expand our scope in reaching different communities and audiences, because many communities and audiences needs to know more about audio content activities right from off wiki skills and on wiki skills needed in contributing with audio content. Also we need resources to help us carry out the project successfully, we also need collaboration with experienced editors to engaged themselves in audio editing and conducting trainings and awareness among wikimedians.

We have understand that meetings has to be scheduled with User Group leaders, institutional partners and groups to deliberately discuss a way forward in building a strategic plan that will boost editor’s experience, knowledge, skills and contribution spirit related to audio.

It means a lot to us, especially that we are documenting on oral history related to topics under sound, the project work to document oral pronunciation of words, accents speaking languages, recitations and other knowledgable features related to oral knowledge. So have support from different people collaborating with us to support and assist in free knowledge sharing and development.

It is cultural development, sound plays an important role in language speaking, every language is spoken with using sound, so we get motivation to see that we are documenting oral language and their history related to speech, music, recitations, songs and other aspect that has to do with sound.

The initial funds are 10,100 USD equivalent to 4,173,553.31 NGN converted, so bank charges of 20 USD were taken away out of the 10,100 making it 10,080, converted will give out a sum of 4,163,040, other bank charges have been taken away 10,493 NGN including transfers charges. The exact amount we used in the projects is 4,156,000. You will see that in our previous mid-report, we didn’t include this as a result of not completing the project. We are explaining this here because the amount spent on the project doesn’t reach 4,173,553.31 NGN due to bank charges. And there is no slot to explicitly explain these changes. Please take note that there is no amount of unspent funds though we tick on yes in questions 34 and 34b so including the sum of 10,493NGN will exactly give you 4,163,040.
