The school management of Fountain University, Osun state University and Federal Polytechnic Ede, in Osun state.

Part 2: Your main learning edit

6. In your application, you outlined your learning priorities. What did you learn about these areas during this period?

We hosted 2 Physical meetings and 2 virtual meetings for new editors/participants in Osun State community, the Students and the people of Osun State were so eager to learn and explore the various Wikimedia projects to promote open access to information for quality service delivery.

The participants asked relevant questions about the reliability of Wikipedia sources, creating articles, and editing wiki pages.

The facilitators were very helpful in providing them with the answers to their questions and guiding them through the editing process as they followed up with new editors between sessions and also, helped them by monitoring the articles they had worked on.

It took longer than we expected for new editors to learn the basic skills to follow up, so we focused our efforts on helping and coordinating them to add reliable sources, and hyperlinks to existing articles as well as Creating and improving existing Wikidata Items.

We were able to effectively improve content gaps on Wikipedia and its sisters project and also able to enhance community engagements, prioritizes relevant skills which improves the contributions of the new participants as well as the sustainability of new editors in various Wikimedia sisters projects

7. Did anything unexpected or surprising happen when implementing your activities? This can include both positive and negative situations. What did you learn from those experiences?

It took longer than we expected for new editors to learn the basic skills to follow up, so we focused our efforts on helping them add reliable sources, and hyperlinks to existing articles as well as Creating and improving existing Wikidata Items.

Due to the general IP address block during the meetings we have shared the links on how to create a Wikipedia account to the WhatsApp channel that participants were in for them to have Wikipedia account before the first physical meeting in order to avoid IP block.

I also learnt that partnering with relevant community bodies, institutions and student unions helps to marginalize participants which brings about effective outcome.

8. How do you hope to use this learning? For instance, do you have any new priorities, ideas for activities, or goals for the future?

These engagement will bring about more robust contribution and also retention of Wikipedia editors n my community.

9. Documentation of resources: Use this space to upload any documents that would be useful to share with others (e.g. communications material, training material, presentations).
