Part 2: Learning
edit4. In your application, you outlined some learning questions. What did you learn from these learning questions when you implemented your project? How do you hope to use this learnings in the future? You can recall these learning questions below. (required)
You can recall these learning questions below: In this project, our primary goal is to understand the impact of involving Iranians abroad and potentially including Afghans in participation within Wikimedia. We're eager to explore how engaging these communities influences the level of involvement and contribution to Wikimedia projects. This understanding will provide valuable insights into the dynamics of community engagement and participation within the Wikimedia movement. We also want to know how encouraging Persian-speaking communities, like Iranians and Afghans, can make content in different languages on Wikimedia. By working with local people in each city, we want to understand how it makes events successful and gets more people involved.
Hybrid events require careful coordination to ensure smooth communication and participation, especially with technical challenges like sound and image quality. We also found that pre-registration helps create a focused environment but limits broader engagement. Additionally, we learned that accurate resource forecasting is essential to avoid surplus materials.
For future events, we plan to improve outreach for broader participation, test technology earlier to avoid issues, and refine participant registration to better manage resources. These adjustments will help enhance future Wikimedia events' overall experience and effectiveness.
5. Did anything unexpected or surprising happen when implementing your activities? This can include both positive and negative situations. What did you learn from those experiences? (required)
Unexpectedly, some registered participants did not attend the event, despite prior confirmation. This led to an overestimate of the catering and materials needed. Additionally, technical issues with the sound and video quality, due to insufficient equipment, caused delays and reduced the experience for some participants.
We learned that managing resources and technical preparations in advance is crucial to avoid waste and ensure smooth operations. Moving forward, we will improve participant confirmation processes and conduct technical tests ahead of time to prevent such issues from impacting the event.
6. What is your plan to share your project learnings and results with other community members? If you have already done it, describe how. (required)
I have shared the project's results through a report on Meta, a post on the village pump of Persian Wikipedia, and an article on Diff. I also plan to write about it in the CEE newsletter. These actions ensure the learnings and outcomes are communicated to the wider Wikimedia community.
