Grant Proposal edit

M. Please state the title of your proposal. This will also be the Meta-Wiki page title.

Wikipedia Awareness and Edit-a-Thon Campaign for The Universal Writers and Authors Training Center (UWA) Kaduna.

Q. Indicate if it is a local, international, or regional proposal and if it involves several countries? (optional)

Local

Q2. If you have answered regional or international, please write the country names and any other information that is useful for understanding your proposal.

R. If you would like, please share any websites or social media accounts that your group or organization has.

1. What is the change that you are trying to bring about and why is this important.

Going through many Wikipedia articles especially, about our local histories written in Hausa, I can't help but notice a great dearth and scarcity of information which even the most unlearned men on the street are aware of but are either stated incorrect or completely omitted. I believe by engaging these young writers who are already willing to make impact with their words, I will increase the chance of getting more accurate narration, content creation and information about our history, culture and heritage. Therefore, this project seeks to identify and address the aforementioned problems through engaging these writers. And if this proposal is approved, it will also grow the Hausa Wikimedians User Group as well as Wikimedian Movement, and subsequently, articles that are less improved will be developed.

2. Describe your main approaches or strategies to achieve these changes and why you think they will be effective.

I have already sent an introductory letter to the Association seeking permission to let the activity take place and hence, was received with great enthusiasm. A pilot meeting will be arranged soon to discuss the modalities when the proposal is approved. The Association already has an established communication channel which is used to reach out all members at any moment notice. Posters and stickers will be designed and distributed to the members during the pilot meeting so that they get knowledge of what Wikipedia is all about before the major activity. Also I know one important person in the Association who happen to be the secretary of the Association i already contacted and introduced Wikipedia to him and accepted with great enthusiasm, subsequently Wikipedia user account was created for him. He is now an editor. The organization secretary also told me that the Association government is set to organise a National Summit in coming weeks, so I also have a plan of designing flyers that will be distributed to the members on the National Summit Day. The secretary is ready enough to give me every support and assistance needed for the success of this event. This will also add in ensuring Wikimedia Movement Strategy is achieved and highly effective.

3. What are the activities you will be developing and delivering as part of these approaches or strategies?

The major activity is the Edit-a-Thon after the campaign awareness. We are organizing a two-day project.

During the activities an experienced wikimedian who will be showcase and the controversy of of over what is right and wrong will be discussed. This editor wil be directed to make empherical research and supplied the accurate information thereby walking through the process. After the activities all available social media platforms will be deployed and entry log will be maintained. This log will then be used to offer award and recognition to top editor at the end of the period. This will go on after event and also this will go a long way in ensuring long term engagement and highly effective.

The activities are as follows:

Trip: there will be a trip with 10 experienced wikimedians mentioned in this project to the official Center of the Universal Writers and Authors (UWA) explaining what Wikipedia is all about and the goals of Wikipedia projects.

Edit-a-Thon: On the second day of the project, as the project organizer I will introduce and explain Wikipedia and other experienced wikimedians will assist and take over in explaining Wikipedia mission and targetes.

Other activities on the day are:

  • creating user account for newly recruited editors
  • Editing
  • Article writing
  • Fixing errors
  • Creating social media flatforms and add new editors
4. Are your activities part of a Wikimedia movement campaign or event? If so, please select the relevant campaign below. If so, please select all the relevant campaigns from the list below. If "other", please state which.

During the activities an experienced editor will be showcase and the controversy of over what is right and wrong will be discussed. The editor will be directed to make empherical research and supplied the accurate information thereby walking through the process. After the event all available social media platforms will be deployed and entry log will be maintained. This log will then be used to offer award and recognition to top editors at the end of certain period. This will go on indefinitely. And also these will go a long way in ensuring long term engagement and highly effective.

10. In what ways are you actively seeking to contribute towards creating a safer, supportive, more equitable environment for participants?

The UWA is already a gender and religious balance organization with its members spread across all ethnic, religious, tribal and political affiliation. The construction of the Association has neutralized any bias that may be construe. They are a group of change makers who dream job is essentially writing.
