Part 1: Project and impact edit

1. Describe the implemented activities and results achieved. Additionally, share which approaches were most effective in supporting you to achieve the results. (required)

We did several things for our project. We went around the university to tell people about Wikipedia, held training sessions online and in person, and gave out informative flyers.

As a result, the people we trained learned more about Wikipedia and began to like it more. They got involved in Wikipedia by editing articles and working on projects together. They also told us what they liked and what could be better.

The best parts of our project were the online training because they were flexible, community involvement because it brought people together, and the central website we made to share information. These helped us reach our goals of making people at Federal University Gusau more aware of Wikipedia and encouraging them to participate.

Part 2: Learning edit

4. In your application, you outlined some learning questions. What did you learn from these learning questions when you implemented your project? How do you hope to use this learnings in the future? You can recall these learning questions below. (required)

You can recall these learning questions below: The proposed project aims to address specific learning questions to evaluate its impact and effectiveness. These include assessing the increase in participants' knowledge about Wikipedia and its reliability, measuring the change in attitudes and perceptions towards contributing to Wikimedia projects, evaluating the level of participation and engagement from the university community, gathering feedback and satisfaction levels of participants, and examining the long-term impact of the project on sustained engagement. By collecting data and analyzing the responses to these learning questions, the project will gain insights to refine future initiatives and measure the success of achieving the desired change.

Regarding Knowledge about Wikipedia: Many of the participants had limited or no prior knowledge about Wikipedia, with some not even familiar with what Wikipedia is. Through the project, we successfully addressed this lack of awareness. As a result of our training, participants gained an understanding of Wikipedia and its role as a collaborative knowledge-sharing platform. This knowledge empowered them to actively contribute to Wikipedia. Impact on Research Improvement: The training had a significant impact on the participants, particularly since many of them were students. They learned that they could make edits on Wikipedia, which subsequently improved their research capabilities. By engaging with Wikipedia, they were able to enhance the quality of their research work and gain a deeper appreciation for the value of contributing to a global knowledge resource. Personal Learning Experience: I, too, benefited from the project. As I closely monitored the Hausa Wikipedia Recent Changes page, I witnessed the participants' contributions and observed how they sought additional knowledge. They frequently reached out to me through WhatsApp group and private chat, asking for guidance and insights. This personal experience reinforced the importance of providing ongoing support and mentorship to sustain participants' engagement.

5. Did anything unexpected or surprising happen when implementing your activities? This can include both positive and negative situations. What did you learn from those experiences? (required)

Unforeseen Security Situation: One of the most unexpected challenges we encountered was the security situation in the area. Shortly after receiving the University's approval for the project, bandits broke into the University and kidnapped students, causing significant security concerns. As a result, we had to postpone the project's start by one week and relocate the physical training sessions to a safer venue adjacent to the University premises. This security incident emphasized the importance of flexibility and adaptability in project planning. Participants' Dedication: One pleasantly surprising aspect of the project was the unwavering dedication of the participants. Despite the changed location and the additional travel required, they continued to attend all the training events. Their commitment to improving their knowledge and contributing to Wikipedia was truly inspiring and highlighted the potential impact of such initiatives on motivated individuals. Learnings from Unexpected Situations: The security incident underscored the need for comprehensive risk assessment and contingency planning in future projects. It taught us to be prepared for unforeseen events and to prioritize the safety of participants and project personnel. The participants' dedication demonstrated the strong desire for knowledge and the positive impact that dedicated individuals can have on the success of such initiatives. This encourages us to continue creating opportunities for motivated individuals to learn and contribute to Wikimedia projects. These unexpected situations not only presented challenges but also provided valuable lessons in project planning, adaptability, and the resilience of motivated participants.

6. What is your plan to share your project learnings and results with other community members? If you have already done it, describe how. (required)

I employed a multifaceted approach to share our project's learnings and results, encompassing various platforms for diverse audiences. This included the use of online meetings where we engaged with participants to understand their perspectives and shared our project goals. In addition, we actively utilized WhatsApp groups, including the participants' group and the General Hausa Wikipedia WhatsApp group, for ongoing discussions and knowledge dissemination. Furthermore, to ensure a comprehensive online presence, I created a dedicated landing page where in-depth project information and findings were made available to a broader community. These combined efforts facilitated the effective sharing of our project's outcomes and insights.
