1. What is the change that you are trying to bring about and why is this important.

Wikidata is a free, centralized, multilingual database that serves as a repository of data for all Wikimedia projects. In commemorating Wikidata’s 10th birthday, this project hopes to advance it’s objectives by introducing new and existing editors to the essence of how Wikidata provides support data for all Wikimedia projects and celebrate the impact and advancement that the project has made in the Wikimedia space thus far. This event would give opportunities for existing and new editors to increase their knowledge of the project, collaborate and interact with co-editors, contribute to knowledge and of course have fun as Wikidata clocks 10 years of existence.

2. Describe your main approaches or strategies to achieve these changes and why you think they will be effective.

This project would be developing the capacity of new and existing editors in contributing to Wikidata as well as fostering exchange of ideas, informed engagements, concepts and resources and related tools that will aid the advancement of Wikidata objectives, while celebrating the achievements of users and the project within the community.

3. What are the activities you will be developing and delivering as part of these approaches or strategies?

Organizing an on-site physical gathering of new and existing Wikidata contributors to train, contribute and celebrate. This meetup would support editing sessions, hackathon to reuse data on Wikidata, discussion and exchange of ideas on how Wikidata can be explored in local languages and how it’s database can be used to collect and manage contextual articles in the space and of course a party!

4. Are your activities part of a Wikimedia movement campaign or event? If so, please select the relevant campaign below. If so, please select all the relevant campaigns from the list below. If "other", please state which.

Wikipedia Birthday or Anniversary

5. Do you have the team that is needed to implement this proposal?

This project would be facilitated by myself and two other experienced editors - Timmylegend and Prithee P. The facilitators who are experienced editors and hosted various meet ups, edit-a-thons and wiki projects would be responsible for onboarding and training new volunteers, the basics of contributing to Wikidata, as well as hosting editing and data hackathon sessions for all participants.

6. Please state if your proposal aims to work to bridge any of the identified CONTENT knowledge gaps (Knowledge Inequity)? Select up to THREE that most apply to your work.

Topics considered to be of impact or important in the specific context

6.1 In a few sentences, explain how your work is specifically addressing this content gap (or Knowledge inequity) to ensure a greater representation of knowledge.

Wikidata is a free centralized repository of content data on the free encyclopedia, hence, contributing to Wikidata bridges the data gap to projects and related articles on Wikipedia and sister projects.

7. Please state if your proposal includes any of these areas or THEMATIC focus. Select up to THREE that most apply to your work and explain the rationale for identifying these themes.

Education, Open Technology, Diversity

8. Will your work focus on involving participants from any underrepresented communities?

Linguistic / Language, Socioeconomic status

9. Who are the target participants and from which community? How will you engage participants before and during the activities? How will you follow up with participants after the activities?

This project hopes to onboard new interested volunteers who are passionate about knowledge, it’s gathering, arrangement and distribution in Lagos, Nigeria and possess basic digital/IT skills. Experienced editors in Wikimedia communities within the local region are encouraged to be a part of the project as contributions from these editors are the reason we’re celebrating and to also discuss advancement of the project within our community, whilst promoting it’s regular use and adoption.

10. In what ways are you actively seeking to contribute towards creating a safer, supportive, more equitable environment for participants?

In accordance with the friendly space policy, through this project, we would be encouraging personalities from marginalized communities to participate in this knowledge gap bridging towards ensuring the free encyclopedia hosts data and information for almost every topic.

11. Please tell us about how you have let your Wikimedia communities know about the planned activities and this proposal. Use this space to describe the processes you carried out to make the community more involved in planning this proposal. Please link the on-wiki community discussion(s) around the proposals.

Local communities have been interacted with on group discussion platforms like WhatsApp, to intimate them about this project and host continuous focal discussions and ideas sharing sessions. The intent of this project can also be found on the community notification page for Nigerian projects: https://meta.m.wikimedia.org/wiki/Talk:Wikimedia_User_Group_Nigeria#Wikidata_10th_Birthday_Lagos

Other Wikidata contributors from various parts of the world have been briefed on the idea of hosting this anniversary celebration in Lagos on Telegram and other discussion channels.

12. Are you aware of other Rapid Fund proposals in your local group, community, or region that are being submitted and that align with your proposed project?

No

If yes:

12.1 Did you explore the possibility of doing a joint proposal with other leaders in your group?
N/A
12.2 How will this joint proposal allow you to have better results?
N/A

If no:

12.1 What was the reason for you deciding NOT to develop a joint proposal? How will you guarantee coordination efforts to make sure that you are not duplicating efforts and that you can maximise your work and joint impact.
Having had discussions with volunteer editors within the community, it was observed that there has been no application nor plan to host Wikidata’s Birthday Celebration in Lagos that has been made known at least. This is the reason for this application, since there is an evident number of contributors resident in the state who would want to increase capacity contributing to Wikidata and celebrating its achievements so far. The people who make these knowledge available for free and global use need to be celebrated. The joint experience of facilitators who have hosted various Wikimedia projects would be leveraged to maximize impact within the community.
13. Will you be working with other external, non-Wikimedia partners to implement this proposal? Required.

No

13.1 Please describe these partnerships and what motivates the potential partner to be part of the proposal and how they add value to your work.

14. In what ways do you think your proposal most contributes to the Movement Strategy 2030 recommendations. Select a maximum of THREE options that most apply.

Increase the Sustainability of Our Movement, Improve User Experience, Identify Topics for Impact, Innovate in Free Knowledge

Learning, Sharing, and Evaluation edit
