Part 1 Understanding your work edit

1. Briefly describe how your proposed activities and strategies were implemented

We first organised a five-day Wikidata edit-a-thon to create and update Wikidata items for Ghanaian public senior high schools. The aim of the contest was to create and improve Wikidata pages. After that, we organised a meetup to celebrate Wikidata’s tenth birthday by inviting our community members together with members of other communities and also using the occasion to award the contest winners. Through the meetup, we introduced participants to the Wikidata query service and Wikidata lexemes. This approach was employed to help build the capacity of our community members and provide an avenue for interactions among community members.

2. Were there any strategies or approaches that you felt were effective in achieving your goals? Please describe these strategies and approaches.

Yes, we pre-informed our community members about the contest and provided the necessary resources to enable participants' preparation and participation. We constantly communicated the need to register, contest rules, and timelines of the events. For the organisers, we assigned each member a role and checked on them to gain progress on their assigned roles.

3. Please use this space to upload media and other files that help tell your story and impact.

4. To what extent do you agree with the following statements regarding the work carried out with the support of this Fund? You can choose “not applicable” if your work does not relate to these goals.

Our efforts during the Fund period have helped to...
A. Bring in participants from underrepresented groups Agree
B. Create a more inclusive and connected culture in our community Strongly disagree
C. Develop content about underrepresented topics/groups Not applicable to your fund
D. Develop content from underrepresented perspectives Neither agree nor disagree
E. Encourage the retention of editors Neither agree nor disagree
F. Encourage the retention of organizers Strongly agree

5. Is there anything else you would like to share about how your efforts helped to bring in participants and/or build out content, particularly for underrepresented groups?

N/A

Part 2: Your main learning edit

6. In your application, you outlined your learning priorities. What did you learn about these areas during this period?

From our survey feedback, we learned that over 94% of participants who participated in our activities learned something new, ranging from creating items to conducting queries.

We also learned that the majority of community members had a positive feeling about the movement, even though one concern was raised about the lack of motivation among community members.

For motivating factors that influenced old participants to participate and contribute to Wikidata in this event, our learnings ranged from meeting new editors and other Wikimedians, improving Ghanaian content on Wikidata, sharpening editing skills, learning new things and the love for competition.

We also learned that utilising our social media platforms was a very effective way of creating awareness.

7. Did anything unexpected or surprising happen when implementing your activities? This can include both positive and negative situations. What did you learn from those experiences?

Though the event was a local one, we had one participant from Nigeria. This attests to our learning that using our social media platforms was effective enough to reach participants outside the country.

During the physical meetup, the planned time had been exhausted, and this caused us to pay extra for the rented space to be able to complete our program. We learned to allot more time for our meetings to accommodate similar impromptu situations.

We also found out that our participants had difficulties accessing the venue for the event due to its location. We discovered that it is preferable to involve community members in the selection of a venue that is easily accessible to community members.

8. How do you hope to use this learning? For instance, do you have any new priorities, ideas for activities, or goals for the future?

We intend to continue organising activities that foster community interaction and also come up with initiatives that will motivate community members. We also intend to develop a robust framework for our social media.

9. Documentation of resources: Use this space to upload any documents that would be useful to share with others (e.g. communications material, training material, presentations).
