Padomasan Village is a small area on the outskirts of Jember, East Java, Indonesia, where the community has very limited awareness of environmental conservation efforts. The management of organic and inorganic waste also lacks adequate facilities. When asked about waste classification, most residents struggle to provide an answer. Additionally, waste management in Padomasan receives little attention, with no designated landfill site, leading many residents to dispose of or bury their waste improperly.
To address these issues, we aim to empower the community through the Wiki Peduli Lingkungan movement while also supporting the Wiki for Human Rights campaign. Our initiative will provide an integrated waste management system, promote environmental awareness through collaboration with local residents, and educate the community on waste classification and structures. Throughout this process, we will document key aspects such as waste types, management methods, community attitudes, and other relevant data. These will then be uploaded as an open-image repository on Wiki Commons, documented in Wikibooks to highlight community rights to waste management access, and incorporated into relevant Wikipedia articles.
The change we seek is to improve awareness and capacity among rural women in Padomasan, Jombang District, Jember Regency, in sustainably managing organic waste. We aim to help this community understand the importance of waste management in creating a cleaner, healthier environment that supports local food security. Additionally, we strive to encourage their participation in documenting these local practices on Wikimedia platforms, making this knowledge accessible to a global audience.
The main challenges we seek to address include limited access to information and training on environmentally friendly waste management, as well as a lack of digital skills for documenting local practices. Another challenge is raising awareness about the connection between environmental management and human rights, such as the right to a healthy living environment.
Our key approach to achieving this change is through hands-on training for our disability partners who have previously participated in the Wikibility project. We will also conduct writing and content-sharing workshops on Wikimedia, such as Wikipedia articles and Wikimedia Commons uploads, based on the empowerment activities. By doing so, we not only empower local women but also document local knowledge to foster global collaboration and support the goals of the Wiki for Human Rights campaign.

- 9. Who are the target participants and from which community? How will you engage participants before and during the activities? How will you follow up with participants after the activities? (required)
The target participants of this initiative are the residents of Padomasan Village, particularly rural women who have limited access to information on organic waste management. Additionally, the disability group previously involved in the Wikibility project will play a crucial role in this activity, as they have experience in documenting local knowledge and contributing to Wikimedia projects. By engaging both the local community and vulnerable groups, we aim to ensure that the Wiki for Environmental Awareness movement is truly inclusive and relevant to the needs of the local population.
Before the activities take place, we will engage with participants through direct community outreach and online discussions with relevant stakeholders. This approach aims to assess their initial level of knowledge on waste management and to design training materials that are tailored to local conditions and needs. We will also utilize social media and community communication groups to share preliminary information about the objectives and benefits of this initiative.
During the activities, participants will actively take part in various training sessions, including understanding waste classification, environmentally friendly waste management practices, and documentation skills through photos and written content to be uploaded to Wikimedia Commons and Wikipedia. A participatory approach will be implemented to ensure that participants are not just beneficiaries but also play an active role in disseminating this knowledge within their communities.
After the activities, we will conduct follow-up sessions by forming discussion groups and mentoring programs for participants who wish to further develop their skills in waste management and Wikimedia contributions. Additionally, we will organize knowledge-sharing sessions to document the outcomes of the initiative and share them with the broader Wikimedia community. By making this documentation openly accessible on Wikimedia Commons and Wikibooks, we hope that the local community will not only benefit directly from the initiative but also contribute to the global Wiki for Human Rights campaign and inspire other communities to take similar action.

- 11. How did you discuss the idea of your project with your community members and/or any relevant groups? Please describe steps taken and provide links to any on-wiki community discussion(s) about the proposal. (required) You need to inform the community and/or group, discuss the project with them, and involve them in planning this proposal. You also need to align the activities with other projects happening in the planned area of implementation to ensure collaboration within the community.
To ensure that this project aligns with the needs and interests of the community, we initiated discussions with relevant groups, including local community members in Desa Padomasan, contributors from the Wikibility project, and Wikimedia volunteers who have experience in environmental documentation. The discussion process was carried out in several stages:
1. Initial Community Engagement We conducted informal discussions with local community members, particularly the women in Desa Padomasan, to understand their knowledge and challenges regarding waste management. This was done through direct visits and small group discussions, where we identified key issues such as the lack of structured waste disposal facilities and limited awareness of sustainable waste management practices.
2. Consultation with Wikibility and Wikimedia Contributors Since this project aims to integrate community-based environmental efforts with Wikimedia platforms, we engaged with Wikibility participants and other Wikimedia contributors who have expertise in documentation and open knowledge sharing. We discussed how we could effectively document the waste classification process, community attitudes, and best practices in a way that aligns with Wikimedia Commons, Wikipedia, and Wikibooks.
3. Online Community Discussion To involve a broader Wikimedia community and ensure alignment with existing initiatives, we initiated discussions on relevant on-wiki platforms. This included engaging in discussions within Wikimedia Indonesia’s community channels and reaching out to contributors involved in Wiki for Human Rights campaigns. These discussions focused on how our project could contribute to existing Wikimedia sustainability efforts and how volunteers from the Wikimedia movement could support our initiative.
4. Alignment with Existing Projects We reviewed other ongoing initiatives related to environmental awareness and knowledge sharing in Indonesia, ensuring that our project complements rather than duplicates existing efforts. This included collaborating with Wikimedia Indonesia’s education and outreach programs and exploring potential partnerships with local sustainability-focused organizations.
The results of these discussions have been incorporated into our proposal, ensuring that the activities we plan to undertake reflect the needs of the community while also strengthening contributions to Wikimedia projects. We will provide links to relevant on-wiki discussions once they are available, as we continue to seek broader input and collaboration from the Wikimedia community.

Learning and metrics
edit- 17. What do you hope to learn from your work in this project or proposal? (required)
Through this project, we aim to understand how community-based environmental initiatives can be documented and shared effectively on Wikimedia platforms while also empowering the local community, particularly women in Padomasan Village. One of the key aspects we want to explore is how community-based waste management practices can be systematically documented and made useful for the open knowledge ecosystem. We hope to identify the best methods for capturing, categorizing, and presenting waste management practices so they can be widely accessed on Wikimedia Commons, Wikibooks, and Wikipedia.
We also seek to understand the most effective strategies for encouraging rural communities, especially women, to contribute to open knowledge. By examining their motivations and the challenges they face, we hope to develop more inclusive and relevant training and participation approaches for local communities. Additionally, we aim to assess the extent to which structured access to knowledge on waste management can influence people’s attitudes and behaviors toward environmental sustainability.
Furthermore, this project aims to explore how integrating the Wiki for Human Rights campaign with local sustainability initiatives can enhance community participation and advocacy. By linking environmental issues with human rights, we want to see if this approach can increase awareness that proper waste management is part of the right to a healthy environment.
Lastly, we aim to understand the challenges rural communities face in adopting digital skills for knowledge sharing and to find practical solutions for increasing their participation in Wikimedia projects. Through these learnings, we hope to develop more effective strategies for engaging marginalized communities in the open knowledge ecosystem and contribute to broader discussions on inclusivity within the Wikimedia movement.
