Part 1 Understanding your work edit

1. Briefly describe how your proposed activities and strategies were implemented

Wiki Loves Women in Namibia aimed to improve Namibian women's biographies on Wikipedia through an Edit-a-thon which runs through 3 months ( 24 Nov 2022- 24 February 2023). The series of training and editing helped participants to horn their Wikipedia editing skills and contribute toward closing the gap of Namibian women's representation on Wikipedia.

We carried out 2 physical trainings and four virtual trainings to train new and existing editors on how to identify Namibian women biographies that need improvements and how to create new articles for the women that didn't have articles on Wikipedia.

2. Were there any strategies or approaches that you felt were effective in achieving your goals? Please describe these strategies and approaches.

I think the approach and strategies that really worked for us was to engage participants on one on one basis due to the fact that most people were on holidays.

We didn't have three physical training sessions, we had two and use up the other money for more data to enable each participant enough data to participate in the virtual event and in the edit a thon. Most of the participants were in remote earliers with less wifi conneection hence the wifi suppliments.

3. Please use this space to upload media and other files that help tell your story and impact.

4. To what extent do you agree with the following statements regarding the work carried out with the support of this Fund? You can choose “not applicable” if your work does not relate to these goals.

Our efforts during the Fund period have helped to...
A. Bring in participants from underrepresented groups Agree
B. Create a more inclusive and connected culture in our community Agree
C. Develop content about underrepresented topics/groups Strongly agree
D. Develop content from underrepresented perspectives Strongly agree
E. Encourage the retention of editors Strongly agree
F. Encourage the retention of organizers Strongly agree

5. Is there anything else you would like to share about how your efforts helped to bring in participants and/or build out content, particularly for underrepresented groups?

We managed to bring existing and new editors together and it was a great experience. The list [1] that we were working with first for women that are not having articles , only some women article managed to go through and the rest were not having enough content inorder to be considered notable. So we identified women that are notable and are widely represented in the press and other written work. That helped us to update the content of these women by creating new articles or improving their biographies on Wikipedia.

Part 2: Your main learning edit

6. In your application, you outlined your learning priorities. What did you learn about these areas during this period?

Advance skills of creating proper authentic articles for notable people (eg women) in Namibia and contribute to bridging the knowledge gap. I have acquired this skills by participating in the contest myself by employing interventions when plan fails. Eg. Identifying women that are worthy writing about and encouraging students would like all participants to be ambassadors of creating free knowledge on Wikipedia in Namibia. Creating a strong basis for a community user group in Namibia so that this can be a continuous process.

7. Did anything unexpected or surprising happen when implementing your activities? This can include both positive and negative situations. What did you learn from those experiences?

Yes The list of Namibia Women in Red did not yield any good results because the women that are there mostly are not notable or have little information. It didn't have most black Namibian women as well. As a result, we ended up searching for other women that are notable and creating articles or improving their biographies, which worked well for us.

8. How do you hope to use this learning? For instance, do you have any new priorities, ideas for activities, or goals for the future?

This was a learning curve for me as an organizer and volunteer of Wikimedia.

1. Due to the timing of doing this project during seasonal holiday, we through people will have some time off and just do some editing, but it didn't turn out to be so. Most of the editing was done through physical meet ups. Furthermore, the one one engagement that was done helped participants soldier on with editing. For the next projects, having many mentors will help participants edit with confidence until such a time they stand on their own with editing.
2. Flexibility in planning. The flexibility to change how you planned may happen and that okay. I have learned that being flexible in how I execute the project plan helped me execute this project. Flexibility to cut cost of lunch or breakfast to provide participants with transport in order to reach the venue the editathon is taking place or cutting stationaries to provide data for easy connectivity are some of the strategies that help with the execution of the project.

9. Documentation of resources: Use this space to upload any documents that would be useful to share with others (e.g. communications material, training material, presentations).

Part 3: Metrics edit

10a. Open Metrics reporting

In your application, you defined some open metrics and targets (goals). You will see a table like the one below with your metric in the title and the target you set in your proposal automatically filled in. Use the tables to report the result. Use the comments column to describe any aspects of this result that you find relevant. If the results were different from the initial target (goals) then you can explain why and what you learned from this. You can also provide any qualitative analysis regarding these results. In the last column please describe the tools and methodology used to collect this data and any difficulties you might have had.

12. Did you have any difficulties collecting data to measure your results? This could include things like a lack of time or resources, or the expertise in your team to collect this data. It could also include difficulties with particular data collection tools.

Yes

12a. State what difficulties you had.

1. Timing: Seasonal holidays time

2. Lack of resources
3. Motivation: Lack of motivation when created content is deleted due to some obvious mistakes that participants do.

12b. How do you hope to overcome these challenges in the future? Do you have any recommendations for the Foundation to support you in addressing these challenges?

1. Timing: Since this was organized during the seasonal holiday, most participants travelled to their respective rural areas and this decreased the edit counts during December and beginning of January. We moved most of the engagement session to January and February and the edit counts increased.

2. Lack of resources such as data and connectivity in rural areas made it hard for participants to edit while they were away in holidays.

13. Use this space to upload any documents and provide links to any tools you have used that would be useful to understand your data collection (e.g., surveys you have carried out, communications material, training material, program and event dashboard link, project page on Meta).

We are thankful for the grand and this helped us to reach another milestone in getting the community toward the recognition status. Although it was a tough road to bring this to completion, we are hopeful that participants have gained knowledge in editing Wikipedia, more so when we are now busy with teaching them Wiki Commons to upload photos.
