As part of the Wiki Loves Earth 2025 in Kyrgyzstan, we plan to make significant changes to improve the quality of content uploaded to Wikimedia Commons, as well as to increase the participation of Wikipedians and other stakeholders.
Our experience last year showed that the contest not only helps to quantitatively grow content, but also strengthens community engagement. However, we faced two major challenges:
- The quality of images uploaded. Last year, many photos were uploaded, but their quality often left much to be desired. In addition, many images lacked correct descriptions and metadata.
- Limited geographic coverage. Most of the uploaded photos were taken in popular and well-known locations, while many lesser known but valuable natural areas were left out.
Based on last year's experience we plan the following methods for successful implementation of our contest and solving the above mentioned problems:
1. Improving the quality of uploaded images. To improve the quality of content, we will introduce several initiatives:
- Training events. Conducting online and offline workshops on photography and image processing.
- Instructional design. Creating clear guidelines for uploading images and filling in metadata.
These methods have already proven to be effective. For example, in 2024, a Wiki Photo Workshop was held in Tashkent, which contributed to an increase in the number of high-quality images uploaded to photo contests in Uzbekistan (https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wiki_Photo_Workshop_2024_in_Tashkent ).
In addition, last year we successfully used Instagram to promote the contest by publishing step-by-step instructions on how to participate and running targeted advertising. This attracted more participants and we plan to build on this approach in 2025.
2. Expanding geographical coverage and engaging new participants In order to avoid a repeated bias towards well-known locations, this year we aim to cover lesser-known natural areas more actively. To this end, we are:
- Organize expeditions to regions that were underrepresented last year (e.g. https://ru.wikivoyage.org/wiki/%D0%9F%D1%80%D0%B8%D1%80%D0%BE%D0%B4%D0%BD%D1%8B%D0%B5_%D0%BF%D0%B0%D0%BC%D1%8F%D1%82%D0%BD%D0%B8%D0%BA%D0%B8_%D0%9A%D1%8B%D1%80%D0%B3%D1%8B%D0%B7%D1%81%D1%82%D0%B0%D0%BD%D0%B0/en ).
- We will attract local photographers and enthusiasts by offering them cooperation.
- We will launch an advertising campaign on social networks to reach a wider audience.
Past experience has shown that organizing field photo expeditions yields excellent results. In 2024, the Kyrgyz Wikipedian community held two photography workshops in Osh and Bishkek, which led to a significant increase in the number of images from these regions. (https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wiki_Photo_Workshop_2025_in_Bishkek )
Also, promotion through social media and targeted advertising will allow us to reach an audience that has not previously participated in the contest but may be interested in contributing to the development of Kyrgyz Wikipedia.(https://www.instagram.com/wikilovesearthkyrgyzstan/# )
Thus, our changes are aimed not only at increasing the amount of uploaded content, but also at its quality and at more even coverage of Kyrgyzstan's natural heritage in Wikiprojects.

- 11. How did you discuss the idea of your project with your community members and/or any relevant groups? Please describe steps taken and provide links to any on-wiki community discussion(s) about the proposal. (required) You need to inform the community and/or group, discuss the project with them, and involve them in planning this proposal. You also need to align the activities with other projects happening in the planned area of implementation to ensure collaboration within the community.
Since the Kyrgyz wikipedia community is small, discussions on the organization of the “Wiki Loves Earth” contest were held in the Telegram group of WLE of Central Asia (https://t.me/c/1910933327/1), as well as in the informal Telegram group of the Kyrgyz language Wikipedia community: https://t.me/Kyrgyz_wikipedia. Given the low activity of community members, it would have been ineffective to hold the discussion on Wikipedia pages. Due to time constraints, we decided to focus on the Telegram discussion. Participants expressed support for the idea of the contest and willingness to participate. However, at the organizational level, there were few people interested. In the future, we plan to recruit more community members not only as participants, but also to serve on the organizing committee and jury, in order to strengthen the sustainability of the contest and broaden the circle of those involved.

The main questions we would like to answer include: how to more effectively engage and motivate participants in the long term, what community outreach methods are most successful for implementing initiatives to develop the Kyrgyz wikipedia, and how to maximize collaboration with official and local communities. The project work will give us valuable insight into what approaches promote sustainable engagement and active participation in conservation initiatives through Wikis.
