  • Title of Proposal: Wiki Loves Earth 2022 in Kenya

  • Amount awarded: 2296.21
  • Amount spent: 19.54 USD, 271150.25 KES

Part 1 Understanding your work edit

1. Briefly describe how your proposed activities and strategies were implemented

To begin with; we reached out to our network of previous participants to take part and advertise the competition. We were able to do this with the use of a mailing list and various whatsapp groups from prior competitions. We also run advertisements linking to the competitions landing page where information on the competition and the intended purpose / goals could be found.

While we embarked on the photo walks, we took guided tours where we were able to gather deeper insights on the various heritage sites. As a result, participants were able to learn historical information on various sites. Over and beyond, participants were also able to gather information on some of the wildlife dwelling in some of the reserves we visited.

Tour guides also informed participants on some of the proposed measures and also those already in place to preserve the wildlife and natural heritage.

2. Were there any strategies or approaches that you felt were effective in achieving your goals? Please describe these strategies and approaches.

The use of tour guides was most certainly the most effective approach. On top of being able to go to the right locations, participants were able to gain quality information on the respective sites, vegetation and wildlife. They were also able to learn historical information behind some of these sites and formations.

As organizers, we gave a target of the number of uploads each participant should upload. This went a long way in achieving and surpassing the community target of 700 photos. We also clearly highlighted the nature of the competition in order to not only get uploads, but quality ones.

3. Please use this space to upload media and other files that help tell your story and impact.

4. To what extent do you agree with the following statements regarding the work carried out with the support of this Fund? You can choose “not applicable” if your work does not relate to these goals.

Our efforts during the Fund period have helped to...
A. Bring in participants from underrepresented groups Agree
B. Create a more inclusive and connected culture in our community Strongly agree
C. Develop content about underrepresented topics/groups Agree
D. Develop content from underrepresented perspectives Agree
E. Encourage the retention of editors Agree
F. Encourage the retention of organizers Strongly agree

5. Is there anything else you would like to share about how your efforts helped to bring in participants and/or build out content, particularly for underrepresented groups?

We have established a partnership with the Lamu museum. Lamu is a fairly underrepresented island in Kenya. Through this partnership, our main point of contact is able to identify community members who are eager to participate in the photo contests and empowers them to tell their stories through the photos they take. We also support them financially in order to ensure that they have everything they need in relation to the projects.

Part 2: Your main learning edit

6. In your application, you outlined your learning priorities. What did you learn about these areas during this period?

We were able to learn more about Kenyan's views on environmental conservation and preservation of heritage sites. We were able to listen to the local citizens' opinions and thoughts. We learned that there is a lot of interest surrounding this and we were inspired to have more sessions like these that entail a lot of progressive conversations which we hope will eventually lead to a mass shift of attitudes and opinions.

7. Did anything unexpected or surprising happen when implementing your activities? This can include both positive and negative situations. What did you learn from those experiences?

We did not have any unexpected occurrences during our implementation of the project. We had an elaborate plan of activities which was well executed.

8. How do you hope to use this learning? For instance, do you have any new priorities, ideas for activities, or goals for the future?

As we interacted with the citizens and participants, we learned that there is a lot of interest in participating in such contests. People are eager to contribute. For future renditions, we hope to widen our scope and be able to accommodate more participants from all over the country. We also aim to partner with more like-minded institutions in order to actualize this goal.

9. Documentation of resources: Use this space to upload any documents that would be useful to share with others (e.g. communications material, training material, presentations).

Part 3: Metrics edit

10a. Open Metrics reporting

In your application, you defined some open metrics and targets (goals). You will see a table like the one below with your metric in the title and the target you set in your proposal automatically filled in. Use the tables to report the result. Use the comments column to describe any aspects of this result that you find relevant. If the results were different from the initial target (goals) then you can explain why and what you learned from this. You can also provide any qualitative analysis regarding these results. In the last column please describe the tools and methodology used to collect this data and any difficulties you might have had.

Open Metrics Summary
Open Metrics Description Target Results Comments Methodology
Number of Uploads The number of uploads will shed light on the willingness and interest to document Kenya's vast natural heritage amongst the local population. 700 1082 This is the number of photos uploaded to Wikimedia Commons by the end of the competition. We surpassed our initial target of 700. This figure is accessible through Wikimedia Commons under the Category: Images from Wiki Loves Earth 2022 in Kenya
Quality of Uploads The quality of uploads will be judged on the basis of photo quality and descriptive quality. The latter will enable us know how much Kenyan's know about the natural heritage hosted in the country and protected areas. 400 700 This is the number of high-quality images submitted for the contest. We are pleased to have surpassed our initial target of 400. We took some time to go through the images and vet the quality i.e not overly edited, good camera quality etc.

Note: a table will appear for each Wikimedia project content contribution you defined in your proposal.

Core Metrics Summary
Core metrics Description Target Results Comments Methodology
Number of participants We aim to target around 25 participants broken down as 15 returning participants and 10 new participants. This is because we have observed a trend in previous photo contests where the returning participants tend to be more than the new participants. 30 25 Due to the nature of how we held the contest, it has been difficult to tell how many new participants we had but we are aware that there were several. We are trying to figure out how to better take note of this and are open to feedback and suggestions.

As for returning participants, we had 25 people who actively reached out and asked to be included in the photo walks.

We were able to keep track of the returning participants via a WhatsApp group specifically formed for this contest.
Number of editors We aim to have at least 10 new accounts created on Wikimedia Commons throughout the course of the project. In total, we expect 25 editors to be contributing to Wikimedia Commons. 25 N/A N/A
Number of organizers We have 2 main organizers who will ensure the smooth running of the photo contest from start to completion. 2 2 We had two organizers on the front line of this project. Their roles were coordinating transport, reimbursements, food, and data. Additional roles included creating the landing page for the project, publishing the report, and coordinating the activities of the partner group in Lamu.
