Part 1: Project and impact edit

1. Describe the implemented activities and results achieved. Additionally, share which approaches were most effective in supporting you to achieve the results. (required)

Our activities were training and targeted new trainees because we are an emerging community, and for the first time, there was organized training according to a plan aimed at recruiting volunteers and providing them with Wikipedia and Wikimedia Commons skills. As for Wikipedia, we had two training groups, one online and the other in the city of Benghazi. The training participants for both groups learned to contribute using edit source, which is not an easy thing to do for beginners, but their interaction was good, and they published articles on the Arabic Wikipedia, all of which were about Libyan content on different topics: history, architecture, literature, arts, etc. The purpose of training participants to contribute using edit source was to acquire editorial skills that they would use not only on Wikipedia but also later on Wikimedia Commons. Indeed, when we started the training sessions at Commons, they did not face difficulties in dealing with the interface of the Wikimedia Commons website, and there was also cooperation between the participants to help each other by editing using edit source. Wikipedia's in-person training sessions had better results because there were more participants and followers than online sessions.

2. Documentation of your impact. Please use space below to share links that help tell your story, impact, and evaluation. (required)

Share links to:

  • Project page on Meta-Wiki or any other Wikimedia project

We used the dashboard to document and follow-up on articles. We also collected images in categories on Commons and documented the project on Wikipedia. This is the second version of the project, which is a comprehensive encyclopedia version.

You can recall these learning questions below: How many individuals got involved in this project ? Which kind of Wikimedia project they get involved more ? Which kind of training has a higher retention of volunteers? Do they have desire to participate in another activities related to Wikimedia project ?‏

The number of individuals who participated in the project sessions was 50. The largest participation was in the in-person Wikimedia Commons sessions. The trainees also have a strong desire to participate in future activities and learn more about Wikimedia projects.

5. Did anything unexpected or surprising happen when implementing your activities? This can include both positive and negative situations. What did you learn from those experiences? (required)

The circumstances of the Derna natural disaster occurred, and this event affected the launch date of the project; accordingly, we postponed the sessions. It affected the quality of the Internet, causing participants to be unable to follow the full sessions. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Derna_dam_collapses

Among the positive events is community participation in the sessions of the Wiki Indaba conference, as well as cooperation with the World Heritage Group by participating in a photographic trip to one of the archaeological areas in eastern Libya.
