- 1. What is the change that you are trying to bring about and why is this important.
This project is a local campaign to support the global event with a similar one in the Gurene Wikimedia Community.
This will celebrate and put a spotlight on community members who are contributing to the goal to digitize the Gurene language and culture on Wikipedia and its sister projects. These individuals include researchers, language translators, students, community groups, lecturers, software developers,
Young Wikimedians are part of the about 1.8 billion young people taking action to solve pressing issues in different corners of the world today. They are found in almost every wikimedia community in the movement. Their presence is felt in the communities they lead, belong to, and the actions they take in building free knowledge on Wikimedia projects.
Therefore, as young people's voices are celebrated all over the world on 12th August, 2022, it is important that we are moved to celebrate young wikimedians and the communities/individuals who are shaping these group of people, for their work in local wikimedia communities and the movement at large.
Beyond this, it creates an opportunity to leverage our number and capacity as a strength for collective action in bridging the knowledge gap on this year's IYD theme Intergenerational Solidarity: "Creating a World for All Ages" on Wikimedia projects.
In addition, we hope to increase youth participation, diversity, and capacity in the Wikimedia movement noting how important it is for movement sustainability.
- 2. Describe your main approaches or strategies to achieve these changes and why you think they will be effective.
1. Develop activities to celebrate young wikimedians, their work and the communities shaping them in Gurene Wikimedia Community. The strategy will be to develop artworks and audi-visual content on what community members have done.
- 2. Develop activities to bridge the knowledge gap on the theme "Intergenerational Solidarity: Creating a World for All Ages" in relation to the Gurene Wikimedia Community context.
- 3. Engage in activity(s) that highlights youth diversity and participation in the movement. This will focus on minority issues where artworks will be developed to sensitize members on the complexity of our society.
- 3. What are the activities you will be developing and delivering as part of these approaches or strategies?
Develop activities to celebrate young wikimedians, their work, and the communities shaping them in Gurene Wikimedia Community: We will launch a simple community survey to identify two (2) young Wikimedians (preferably male and female where available) with the highest number of edits, led/co-led Edit-a-thons/training/campaigns, or other forms of leadership recognized by the community. We will also identify one Wikimedian who is not a young person but helping to shape the journey of young people or their communities within the Gurene Wikimedia Community. We will organize a celebratory community event for the identified people to recognize and award them with prizes. Where possible, we will also share with the WikiVibrance global coordination team to spotlight them through their social media and media partners. Develop activities to bridge the knowledge gap on the theme "Intergenerational Solidarity: Creating a World for All Ages" in relation to the Gurene Wikimedia Community context:
Edit-a-thons like ‘Learn about my community’ creates an environment where older people and historians can share resources with the younger generation to help their community and culture. Oral Tradition is a more significant part of our history therefore this will create a synergy between older folks and younger ones.
Engage in activity(s) that highlight youth diversity and participation in the movement:
Join the participants or communities from different countries in the Wikimedia movement to tell stories of our work and communities during the Wikimania conference which will double as a global launch event for International Youth Day 2022. Share our results and stories with the global coordination team to be included in the diff publication.
