Part 1: Project and impact
edit1. Describe the implemented activities and results achieved. Additionally, share which approaches were most effective in supporting you to achieve the results. (required)
There are nine members of Kent Wiki Club assigned to be incharge of the booth station. the first three out of nine members of the Wiki Kent club were stationed at the booth to provide visitors with guidance on how to upload images to Wikimedia Commons. The guidance included the process of creating visitor accounts, copyright policies, the impact of images on the community, and the selection of categories when uploading image files. Additionally, they taught the process of uploading images to Wikimedia Commons. Meanwhile, 22 other members of the Wiki Kent club moved around separately in and around the Kadazan Dusun Cultural Association hall to take pictures of various aspects of Kadazandusun traditions, such as clothing, food, dances, tools, musical instruments, and language. Some of the locations covered included the open hall, Koisaan Village Cultural area, exhibition booths, inside the KDCA hall where the event was held, and the entrance area which served as the pathway for VIP guests such as the Prime Minister, the Head of State, and other dignitaries. As a result, the Wiki Kent club, through this project, successfully uploaded 1,788 image files and managed to add 10 new contributors to Wikimedia Commons.
The other group of three out of nine members who were stationed at the booth provided visitors with instructions on the steps to contribute to Wiktionary. This guidance included the account creation process and an introduction to language codes for the languages used by the visitors. Consequently, among the languages successfully included in the Malay and English Wiktionary were Kadazandusun, Kadazan, Dusun Rumanau, Dusun Kimaragang, and Bajau Sama. Meanwhile, Wiki club members who had the opportunity would add new Kadazandusun words to Wiktionary or improve and update existing translations. The final result for this aspect of Wiktionary successfully added 26 new editors and created 313 new pages included in the English and Malay Wiktionary.
Then the last three out of the nine members on duty at the booth organized a game (quiz) in the form of "Fill in the Blanks." Participants were required to choose a word from a provided list and match it to a sentence with a missing word. If they did not understand the word, they used Wiktionary to find its meaning in Malay. Based on the implementation of this game, most participants who had limited knowledge of the Kadazandusun language utilized Wiktionary to find the meaning in Malay. This not only increased their vocabulary knowledge of the Kadazandusun language but also opened their minds to the importance of Wiktionary in preserving languages.
Effective strategies include offering incentives such as goodies or gifts to attract public interest, recognizing top contributors with gifts to encourage participation, particularly in uploading content to Wikimedia Commons, and conducting mobile workshops to introduce Wikimedia projects to a broader audience; however, while the previous method of introducing projects through various stations proved effective, it requires refinement for better organization.
For the do’s and don’ts, It is crucial to share the benefits of joining and committing to Wikimedia, provide tangible gifts, set specific targets for trainers to recruit new contributors, and introduce Wikimedia projects in a step-by-step, organized manner, all while avoiding mere verbal promises by substantiating claims with concrete evidence.

Part 2: Learning
edit4. In your application, you outlined some learning questions. What did you learn from these learning questions when you implemented your project? How do you hope to use this learnings in the future? You can recall these learning questions below. (required)
You can recall these learning questions below: 1. Outcomes Communities are more aware of Wikimedia and the use of Wikimedia in preserving the Kadazandusun culture.
Data; Number of new accounts created in Wikimedia.
Learning Quetions: How have their perspectives about Wikimedia changed after they participated in our activities?
2. Outcomes: Wiki Kent uses various ways to reach out to the community to introduce and encourage people to contribute their knowledge especially to uphold Kadazandusun culture.
WikiKent Club consists of members who are enthusiastic and ready to serve in this program by providing guidance and services either in the form of information or interesting activities that are carried out throughout the program.
Data; Number of editors editing one week after WikiKaamatan Number of words added in Wiktionary by new members. Number of pictures uploaded in Commons by new members.
Through the activities that will be carried out, WikiKent will strive to further expand the scope of the Wikimedia community that actively contributes and shares knowledge at the global level about Kadazandusun culture. We believe in the implementation of this program, communities will be more aware that there are many ways to contribute to Wikimedia and are interested in doing so (Wiktionary & Wikicommons).
Learning Questions:
How was our new approach/ strategy effective in bringing in communities? Were we effective in making people feel welcome, safe, not intimidated? Have we been effective in guiding potential contributors to the different ways they can contribute and further develop the needed skills and support?
3. Outcomes: Editing activities and events have been engaged and actively participated by WikiKent members, however, WikiKent is also active in promoting and introducing the uses and functions of Wikimedia to the public either through events and various programs to increase interest, motivation, and enthusiasm in maintaining Kadazandusun culture.
Data; Number of new followers on Instagram Number of words added in Wiktionary by WikiKent Club members. Number of pictures uploaded in Commons by WikiKent Club members.
Wiki Kent Club will be motivated to continue to engage with Wikimedia communities in their context.
Learning Questions: How many are already engaging in the community through different channels - editing, events, communications?
We have successfully introduced Wikimedia to the public and encouraged the community to continue contributing by using their newly created accounts. In this activity we have led and taught people how to enter their ethnic words, such as Kadazandusun and Bajau Sama languages. They were very excited when they now found a platform where they are able to share new knowledge through Wiktionary that the public may not have been exposed to. We have also exposed the public to the use of Wikimedia Commons where they are allowed to contribute ethnic views in the form of photo documentation. Based on the records we have obtained, there are a total of 390 visitors to our booth who have become contributors in Wiktionary and Wikimedia Commons. There are 313 new edits in Wiktionary and 1788 uploads on Wikimedia Commons.
1. How have their perspectives about Wikimedia changed after they participated in our activities? After engaging in our events, more individuals learn about Wikimedia, particularly Wiktionary. They began to see new uses for this platform and considered using it to digitize their own language.
2. a.How was our new approach/ strategy effective in bringing in communities? We attract visitors to our exhibit by offering lessons, games, activities, and brochures. Our captivating banner also piques their interest and curiosity about what we provide.
b. Were we effective in making people feel welcome, safe, not intimidated? We efficiently attract people and guide them through the process of editing Wiktionary. Many individuals, regardless of social status, have visited our booth, and we were able to provide the greatest service.
c. Have we been effective in guiding potential contributors to the different ways they can contribute and further develop the needed skills and support? We had numerous challenges, such as the fact that the visitors who wanted to try editing came from a variety of languages, including other ethnic groups in Kadazandusun and Bajau. However, with our preparations, we were able to teach them how to alter their own language.
3. How many are already engaging in the community through different channels - editing, events, communications? As previously stated, these actions resulted in the addition of numerous new editors to Wiktionary. Aside from that, our social media platform, Instagram, has grown in popularity and visibility. In terms of members, we were successful in meeting our objectives and becoming more active contributors to the wiki. Any of the members that participated said it was a thrilling exercise that has sparked their desire to contribute more to the Wiki Kent Club.
4. How many participants can still continue editing on wiktionary after one month after the event? Currently, Kent Wiki Club members are actively editing on Wiktionary and Commons. However, for new contributors, we should consider innovative ways to stay in touch with them so that they can continue to be engaged in this community. I believe that follow-up is necessary.
5. Did anything unexpected or surprising happen when implementing your activities? This can include both positive and negative situations. What did you learn from those experiences? (required)
Undeniably, there were several unexpected or surprising incidents during the implementation of the WikiKaamatan program. One notable incident involved the booth we operated from, which did not meet our expectations. We had envisioned using a large canopy; however, upon our arrival on May 30, 2024, we found that our designated area was only half the size we anticipated, and we had to share the canopy with another vendor. We do not blame the organizers, as this situation arose due to miscommunication and insufficient details regarding the canopy rental. As a result, we had to rearrange the layout of our tables and the positioning of each station. Additionally, we had brought more tables than needed, causing the booth area to become cluttered. From this incident, we learned the importance of direct communication with the relevant parties in future dealings, rather than relying on intermediaries. This approach is necessary to obtain accurate and clear information directly from primary sources without any loss of meaning.
Another unexpected event was the extremely hot weather. Team members working under the canopy had to endure intense heat throughout the day, which affected their mood and energy levels. From this experience, we realized the need to find ways to procure or borrow fans from nearby premises. This measure is essential to ensure the comfort of team members, enabling them to provide tutorials and work more efficiently.
Furthermore, on the first day, we forgot to bring table covers, resulting in our booth looking less attractive. This oversight impacted the aesthetic appeal, which is a significant draw for visitors. For example, the Maxis booth, with its bright red theme and well-displayed items, stood out prominently. In the future, prioritizing the aesthetic presentation of the booth is crucial to attract more visitors.
Additionally, around 3:00 PM on the first day, heavy rain began to fall, causing some team members' belongings to get wet. The rain also halted the efforts of other team members who were taking photos around KDCA to upload to WikiCommons. The team had to huddle under the canopy with their bags, waiting for the rain to stop. While this situation was beyond our control, it highlighted the need to always anticipate such conditions and prepare a designated area for storing belongings quickly. Bringing umbrellas, especially after checking weather forecasts indicating rain, is also necessary to ensure the well-being and health of team members.
Lastly, an unexpected challenge was the poor internet connectivity at the booth. This issue likely arose due to the high number of users in the same area. In the future, it would be beneficial for the Wiki Kent Club to have internet facilities like a modem or router. This is particularly relevant since one of the club's objectives is to introduce Wiktionary, WikiCommons, and other projects to visitors, which requires a strong internet connection. This would save time and prevent visitors from becoming bored while waiting for the projects to load.
6. What is your plan to share your project learnings and results with other community members? If you have already done it, describe how. (required)
One of the plans we implemented is the WikiKaamatan program, which was held at the Kadazandusun Cultural Association on May 30 and 31, 2024. During this program, we shared information with everyone who visited our booth about Wikipedia, Wiktionary, and Wikimedia Commons. Additionally, we taught people how to contribute to these wiki projects. The project that garnered the most interest from people was Wiktionary. Over the two-day program, approximately 390 people visited our booth.
Other than that, we also shared information about our project (Wiki projects) insights and results with the community through social media (post in WhatsApp Community, Instagram, Facebook & X). For example, we shared about the release of Wikipedia dtp (Wikipedia for the Kadazandusun Language). This page is the result of our contributions to various projects such as Wikipedia Incubator, Wiktionary, Wikimedia Commons, and more. By utilizing social media platforms, we can disseminate information about our efforts in Wikipedia projects. Using these platforms helps us to spread awareness about wikis, share details about our projects, and attract more people to join our activities.
Hosting workshops also helps us to share project learning. For instance, during the WikiKaamatan program, some people, especially teachers who visited our booth, expressed interest in our wiki projects and expressed hope that we could hold workshops in their schools. Some of them even took our lecturer's number for this purpose. So here, we are not only promoting our club's projects but also spreading awareness about Wikimedia to everyone and helping to disseminate information about it. We are also aiding in the development of our community, particularly our minority races in Malaysia, through wiki projects.
