Part 1 Understanding your work edit

1. Briefly describe how your proposed activities and strategies were implemented

It was really nice to coordinate the annual 2023 WikiForHumanRights campaign in Nigeria.

Online meetings took place as planned with the goal of bridging the taboo on privacy and diffidence in face-to-face meetings between Nigerian Wikipedia writers across different geopoitical areas. Through the offline events, active active members were trained by their local community leaders. We had the local edit-a-thons with face to face and online as a national campaign organiser in Nigeria as we planned as well. The coordination was accomplished with the immense support of the local organisers who signed up for the project.

2. Were there any strategies or approaches that you felt were effective in achieving your goals? Please describe these strategies and approaches.

Engaging in regular meetings with the local organizers proved to be a pivotal aspect of ensuring the smooth progression of the project. These gatherings facilitated open communication channels, allowing for in-depth discussions on project updates, challenges, and potential solutions. The one-on-one follow-ups were particularly beneficial in addressing specific concerns and providing personalized support to key individuals involved in the initiative. By fostering a collaborative environment, the project team was able to harness collective insights, leading to more informed decision-making and agile adjustments to the project's direction.

Furthermore, the distribution of merchandise to participants during the local event, as orchestrated by the local project leads, played a dual role in enhancing both engagement and visibility. Not only did it serve as a token of appreciation for the participants' involvement, fostering a sense of community and goodwill, but it also contributed to the project's overall visibility within the local community. The tangible connection established through these branded items helped reinforce the project's identity and mission among both participants and the broader community, amplifying its impact and reach.

4. To what extent do you agree with the following statements regarding the work carried out with the support of this Fund? You can choose “not applicable” if your work does not relate to these goals.

Our efforts during the Fund period have helped to...
A. Bring in participants from underrepresented groups Strongly agree
B. Create a more inclusive and connected culture in our community Strongly agree
C. Develop content about underrepresented topics/groups Agree
D. Develop content from underrepresented perspectives Strongly agree
E. Encourage the retention of editors Strongly agree
F. Encourage the retention of organizers Strongly agree

5. Is there anything else you would like to share about how your efforts helped to bring in participants and/or build out content, particularly for underrepresented groups?

This project gave the national coordinator the opportunity to interact with leaders of emerging communities across the five selected communities, mainly in four states in Nigeria: Imo, Kwara, Osun and Anambra. Community like Wikimedia Owerri Hub collaborated with the student community (club) within the same state, which was highly commendable.

Eagerness of two new communities that participated, KWASU Fan Club and Ivan Fan Club afforded the leaders the opportunity for growth and impact in their capacity.

Part 2: Your main learning edit

6. In your application, you outlined your learning priorities. What did you learn about these areas during this period?

Created awareness across various social media platforms like Instagram, Telegram, Facebook, Twitter among others with the goal to create more awareness about the theme: Right To A Healthy Environment. Besides, I created a "community spirit" which was targeted at having more volunteers to participate in climate and environmental related events and organizations. The effort lead to having increase in the bond and collaboration among Nigerian Wikimedians.

7. Did anything unexpected or surprising happen when implementing your activities? This can include both positive and negative situations. What did you learn from those experiences?

The first surprise was the internal leadership change of positions within Kwasu Fan Club. The initial local team lead had concluded her tenure in office before the project started. More so, the delay from the foundation made the project way behind in a whole lot of ways. This has also been discovered to be a recurrent issue within the movement. I hope it gets better and new grantees do not see this loophole as it is not representing the international organisation well in the good light.

Our activities Even though it was well coordinated, a newly established community had a different event due to multiple communication channels.

It is important to state that the fiscal sponsor would have made the exercise better if they had allowed the national coordination to do the expected tasks. My five years as a PM were not considered capable enough. Less attention was given to the project, and national support was greatly minimal, while the impact was not as huge and weighty as it should be.

There was a clash with the 1Lib 1Ref Campaign which brought about working towards providing references to articles that related to the theme by the local organisers. The emerging communities were enjoined so as to make a robust impact.

Volunteer time is not seen as as important as that of full-time staff. I would hope for the better and trust it would have improved both at the foundational level and the fiscal sponsor level.

8. How do you hope to use this learning? For instance, do you have any new priorities, ideas for activities, or goals for the future?

Yes, my new priority is to embark on project that will be within the timeline agreed with allowance of two months extra. The delay affected but my academic pursuit and another project which did not turn out as expected. It tells me the importance of ensuring the prerequisite needs are adequately supplied within time frame before embarking on any project. The delay encountered was the longest I have ever seen.

9. Documentation of resources: Use this space to upload any documents that would be useful to share with others (e.g. communications material, training material, presentations).
