Part 1 Understanding your work edit

1. Briefly describe how your proposed activities and strategies were implemented

An advert was put on the Tyap Wikimedians User Group Telegram, WhatsApp and Facebook social media handles and on the Nigerian Wikimedians User Group's WhatsApp handle to invite participants. We also compiled the names and contacts of all those who have previously attended our events way back from October 2021, and calls were put across to verbally invite them to the event; many assented, but some gave excuses as to why they would not be able to attend. The event page had some newer persons who expressed willingness to participate but just two of the six of them participated in the event.

Initially, I intended using different channels for participants to conveniently participate online and offline, but on the day of the editing part of the event, the main tool I intended would be used for the counting of the edits by participants, the Outreach Dashboard, did not work as imagined. The second tool, the Integraality tool, which I do not have much knowhow on how it functions did not work as expected, so I decided for us to use other ways to achieve our goal of counting the number of edits by participants.

None of note participated online as expected; the only person who contacted us online said he was unable to log in. He was not adequately attended to, because I was needed by those present offline and colleagues were also in need of my presence to show them what to teach others. Almost all present encountered Wikidata editing for the very first time and the time was limited.

2. Were there any strategies or approaches that you felt were effective in achieving your goals? Please describe these strategies and approaches.

Yeah. When the Outreach Dashboard and the Integraality tools seemed impossible to use during the editing competition, I decided that we just edit, using any of the the three channels that were made available on the Project page without minded where or how the counting of the number of edits by each participant would be be shown or done. After the competition which ran between 10:00 a.m. and 11:59 p.m. on Saturday, 29 October 2022, we counted the number of edits per editor using ToolForge and Xtools.

Another strategy which worked when the some could not access there previously opened accounts was to create another account after many failed trials to revive the initial Wikimedia account so they can take part in the competition. For IP address blocks, we could not do much but to appeal to Amir E. Aharoni who had been of help to our community. Although, he was quite occupied as I was, he gave us a clue as to what to do on our Telegram handle. After the event, I stayed over to put those who showed willingness in learning more about editing, through. All those present offline were able to do one or two things either on Wikidata or the Tyap Wikipedia or both.

3. Please use this space to upload media and other files that help tell your story and impact.

4. To what extent do you agree with the following statements regarding the work carried out with the support of this Fund? You can choose “not applicable” if your work does not relate to these goals.

Our efforts during the Fund period have helped to...
A. Bring in participants from underrepresented groups Agree
B. Create a more inclusive and connected culture in our community Strongly agree
C. Develop content about underrepresented topics/groups Agree
D. Develop content from underrepresented perspectives Neither agree nor disagree
E. Encourage the retention of editors Neither agree nor disagree
F. Encourage the retention of organizers Strongly agree

5. Is there anything else you would like to share about how your efforts helped to bring in participants and/or build out content, particularly for underrepresented groups?

The female folks were well represented in our event and in the editing competition. Two ladies came up with the third and fourth positions. In general, there was no gender barrier and all present were encouraged to edit and never fear making mistakes.

Part 2: Your main learning edit

6. In your application, you outlined your learning priorities. What did you learn about these areas during this period?

I was able to discover that people from my area coped well with editing on Wikidata and to an extent, most people attempted editing mainly on Wikidata during the event and only very few attempted editing on Wikipedia.

7. Did anything unexpected or surprising happen when implementing your activities? This can include both positive and negative situations. What did you learn from those experiences?

The young ladies who came up with the third and fourth positions in the editing competition surprised me. The seemed like people doing nothing serious, but then, the result made me respect them the more.

On the overall scale, I never expected that the participants would find editing on Wikidata the way they did. Their response was quite more than that showed towards editing in the Incubator in our past events.

I was surprised at the rate of IP blocking during the event. It was as if my community was a target. That was because, in the last event we held, not even a person was blocked (if I am not mistaking). I thought the phenomenon was a bygone. It really crippled me to discover that it was not yet so.

8. How do you hope to use this learning? For instance, do you have any new priorities, ideas for activities, or goals for the future?

My resolve to refine the discovery I made in this event is to organize at least, one more Wikidata editing training with my community in the coming year to get people to edit the site with more ease and excitement.

Again, for the tools that failed to give the expected outcome like Outreach Dashboard, Integraality, I need to know more about how to use them, myself. Not just me, I would encourage key persons in my community to learn how to use them.

For the female folks, more females would be brought by way of encouragement, to participate in editing wiki in our community.

9. Documentation of resources: Use this space to upload any documents that would be useful to share with others (e.g. communications material, training material, presentations).

Part 3: Metrics edit

10a. Open Metrics reporting

In your application, you defined some open metrics and targets (goals). You will see a table like the one below with your metric in the title and the target you set in your proposal automatically filled in. Use the tables to report the result. Use the comments column to describe any aspects of this result that you find relevant. If the results were different from the initial target (goals) then you can explain why and what you learned from this. You can also provide any qualitative analysis regarding these results. In the last column please describe the tools and methodology used to collect this data and any difficulties you might have had.

10b. Core Metrics reporting

In your application, you defined targets for some core metrics and targets (goals). You will see a table like the one below with each core metric in the title and the target you set in your proposal automatically filled in. Note: a table will appear for each Wikimedia project content contribution you defined in your proposal.

Core Metrics Summary
Core metrics Description Target Results Comments Methodology
Number of participants The participants who attended on the first day can return on the second day. The average amount of people expected to be present offline is put at 20, while those expected to be present online are put at 15. 35 28 New participants: 4

Returning participants: 24

A total of 26 participants showed interest in participating both online and offline, but only 25 signed on our Wikidata event page.

During the event, only about 17 actually participated -- six of whom were the event organizers. Six were not present at the event. The others either had prolonged IP block issues or came on the second day of event which was mainly a Meetup.

Since the tools I earlier intended for us to use didn't work, we counted the number of edits per editor using ToolForge and XTools (via Revision History) to see their Wikidata records; and on the Tyap Wikipedia, we checked the Recent Changes on that very day to count how many people edited what, and how many edits.
Number of editors In the Tyap Wikimedians User Group, there are about 40 members drawn from the past three offline/in-person editing events we held between October 2021 and May 2022. Out of these, six are active Wikimedia contributors on varying projects like Wikipedia, Incubator and Wikimedia Commons. In each programme we have held, inviting 20 people to attend such an each event, we got most times nothing less than half of that amount. In this event, we shall invite all the previous editors and new editors, with an attractive incentive of highest editor taking an amount of money home. In this way, many would be pushed to edit more. We hope to have as much as about 20 editors (or more) at the end of the meetup event including both old and new editors. 20 11 Newly Registered Users (new editors): 3

Returning editors: 8

One of the new editors is not a first-time participant but he could not create an account in the previous event he attended due to faulty mobile device. In this event, he got his IP address blocked but managed to later create an account after it was unblocked.

ToolForge and XTools
Number of organizers The organizers would have different roles according to their Offices in the Tyap Wikimedians User Group. The names of organizers and their official positions are as follows:
1. Kambai Akau (Executive Director)
2. Zwandien Bobai (Assistant Director)
3. Didam Valentine Michael (Events, Grants and Meetups Coordinator)
4. Linda Bello (Secretary)
5. Stephen Kalad Jonathan (IT, Communications and Outreach Coordinator)
6. Friday Musa (Financial Secretary)

All these people would work together to achieve the set goal of hosting a successful meetup event.

6 6 All volunteers.

12. Did you have any difficulties collecting data to measure your results? This could include things like a lack of time or resources, or the expertise in your team to collect this data. It could also include difficulties with particular data collection tools.

Yes

12a. State what difficulties you had.

The tools I intended would be used to capture the values (Outreach Dashboard, Integraality, MetaWiki table) did not function as expected. Before the event, I tried reaching out through the Wikidata events handle on Telegram if there could be someone who knew about editing on any of the first two tools. I got some help, but not enough to put me through as required. Maybe, I didn't do enough, but I resorted to working it out in the best way I could imagine.

12b. How do you hope to overcome these challenges in the future? Do you have any recommendations for the Foundation to support you in addressing these challenges?

I would want Wikimedia Foundation to support people like me in getting integrated easier working tools across to enable organizers count the number of edits during competitions across the various projects of WMF including on new Wikipedia projects like Tyap, automatically, even without manually requesting for a language to be included in a tool's system.

13. Use this space to upload any documents and provide links to any tools you have used that would be useful to understand your data collection (e.g., surveys you have carried out, communications material, training material, program and event dashboard link, project page on Meta).

14. Have you shared these results with other Wikimedian communities (either affiliates, user groups, volunteers, etc., different to yours)? This can include things such as data and direct outcomes, lessons you have learned, or information on how to run or recreate your programs.

Yes

14a. If yes or partially, please describe how you have already shared them and if you would like to do more sharing, and if so how.

I have shared the old result of the editing competition with my community via our social media handles (on Telegram and WhatsApp), shortly after the rewards were handed over to the top winners. However, I recently discovered that there was an error in the calculation of number of edits due to inaccurate manual counting. I would discuss with my fellow organizers to know what to do about it.

As required in the fund agreement, please report any deviations from your fund proposal here. Note that, among other things, any changes must be consistent with our WMF mission, must be for charitable purposes as defined in the grant agreement, and must otherwise comply with the grant agreement.

17c. If you have not already done so in your budget report, please provide information on changes in the budget in relation to your original proposal.

Since there were no online editors, the amount set aside for data reimbursement of online attendees was added to the miscellaneous fund. This was used for the repairs of three of the organizers' mobile phones to enable all edit wiki and communicate with ease. Any other balance remaining was used to get some data for those who showed interest in editing Wikidata, Wikimedia Commons and Wikipedia, after the event. Prior to and after this, I often get members of my community who show interest in editing, browsing data, from personal means as a way of boosting their morale.

The rate of inflation in Nigeria today is obvious. Budgets often get estimated, but the prices of goods and services do not always match with what was estimated. Often times, a number of things have to be trimmed to ensure the successful execution of an event.

18. Do you have any unspent funds from the Fund?

No

18a. Please list the amount and currency you did not use and explain why.

N/A

18b. What are you planning to do with the underspent funds?

N/A

18c. Please provide details of hope to spend these funds.

N/A

19. Are you in compliance with the terms outlined in the fund agreement?

Yes

20. Are you in compliance with all applicable laws and regulations as outlined in the grant agreement?

Yes

21. Are you in compliance with provisions of the United States Internal Revenue Code (“Code”), and with relevant tax laws and regulations restricting the use of the Funds as outlined in the grant agreement? In summary, this is to confirm that the funds were used in alignment with the WMF mission and for charitable/nonprofit/educational purposes.

Yes

22. If you have additional recommendations or reflections that don’t fit into the above sections, please write them here.
