Part 1: Project and impact edit

1. Describe the implemented activities and results achieved. Additionally, share which approaches were most effective in supporting you to achieve the results. (required)

"We conducted a training program to educate teachers on how to use Reading Wikipedia in the Classroom. Through the distribution of a needs assessments form and personalized invitations sent to schools, we successfully recruited more teachers than initially anticipated. Approximately 161 teachers expressed interest in participating, with 40 ultimately being accommodated due to capacity constraints. To ensure the success of the training, we implemented additional strategies, including adopting a blended learning approach and providing one-on-one mentorship to teachers during the training process. Recognizing that some participants were struggling to keep pace in large group settings, we organized one-on-one sessions with just five participants per session. This smaller class size allowed teachers to engage more freely, ask questions, and share their challenges. Additionally, the ability to share screens during these sessions facilitated a deeper understanding of individual needs by the trainers. Combining physical training sessions with one-on-one mentorship during online training proved to be highly effective in achieving positive outcomes."

Work processes and plans To kickstart the implementation of our training program, I convened a team meeting with my implementation team to outline our strategies and plan the training sessions. We began by devising an outreach plan, which involved sending out invitations for the training via a form distributed across various social media platforms. Additionally, we personally visited schools to deliver letters inviting them to participate. The response was overwhelming, with a total of 161 teachers expressing interest through the form. However, due to capacity constraints, we were only able to accommodate 40 teachers. To streamline communication, we established a WhatsApp group as our primary communication platform. Key Dates: 9th December: Introductory training commenced. 15th December 2023: Training continued online. 19th December: Physical training session held at LCCI in Lagos Alausa, Ikeja, with a live streaming component. 20th December: Second physical training session conducted at LCCI in Lagos State, Alausa Ikeja, also featuring live streaming. 27th, 28th, 29th December 2023, 4th January, and 6th January 2024: Ongoing online training sessions post the new year. In addition to group training sessions, we introduced one-on-one mentoring sessions for participants who signed up. These sessions provided an interactive platform for teachers to ask questions, seek clarification on challenging areas, and share their screens for personalized assistance. Each session was limited to five participants to ensure focused attention and engagement."

Part 2: Learning edit

4. In your application, you outlined some learning questions. What did you learn from these learning questions when you implemented your project? How do you hope to use this learnings in the future? You can recall these learning questions below. (required)

You can recall these learning questions below: We will find out whether participants agree that Reading Wikipedia in the Classroom is truly a tool for learning and as an open educational resources should be used in the classroom, We will also want to know their impression of the modules, quality of training material, timing etc. We need to know if it has improved their media and information literacy skills which is how to access reliable information online and if it has helped their critical thinking and improve their research skills. Do they understand and see the importance of Wikipedia as a learning resource? How well are their students using and navigating Wikipedia? Do teachers and students understand the concept of Reading Wikipedia in the Classroom?

The needs assessment survey revealed that while many teachers had some knowledge of media and information literacy, the majority had not received any formal training in this area. However, following the completion of the training program, participants reported a significant improvement in their media and information literacy skills, which were previously unfamiliar to them. Given the increasing importance of media and information literacy in today's society, we are committed to sustaining and expanding the training program to equip more teachers with these essential skills.

Analysis of the survey data showed that 76.5% of participants rated the training materials on the Wikilearn platform as very good. Additionally, 41.2% found the timing of the training sessions to be very convenient, while 52.9% considered it to be just convenient. To further enhance participant engagement, we plan to conduct polls on the WhatsApp platform to identify a training time that accommodates at least 90% of our participants, thereby ensuring broader participation from teachers. Link to survey: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1mvBJMNYMC3XsLQDbF41FFCnJ4aytssCUS4EMFYiNm7E/edit?usp=sharingt Furthermore, the survey results indicated that teachers have gained a better understanding of how Wikipedia works and its relevance as an educational resource in the classroom. This positive learning outcome reinforces the significance of incorporating Wikipedia into teaching practices. The confidence gained from this experience will bolster our efforts to seek local partnerships and secure sponsorships, thereby expanding the reach and impact of the training program. Through continued advocacy and outreach, we aim to garner support not only from the Wikimedia Foundation but also from other international institutions. Moving forward, I am committed to advancing this project and actively engaging more teachers in the Wikimedia community in Nigeria. By promoting the use of Wikipedia in classrooms, we can enrich students' learning experiences and contribute to the growth of open knowledge in our society." 5. Did anything unexpected or surprising happen when implementing your activities? This can include both positive and negative situations. What did you learn from those experiences? (required)

"The turnout for the program exceeded my expectations, with 161 participants signing up despite our capacity to accommodate only 25 but we had to increase the participation to 40, organised two events instead of three, so as to accommodate more participants. This turnout was particularly surprising considering the prevailing perception in the educational sector that Wikipedia is not a reliable resource and is not widely accepted. As a Certified Trainer, this experience has changed my perspective and made it easier to attract participants to future programs. During the training, we received requests from participants outside Lagos to join the sessions remotely, prompting us to implement live streaming during the physical training sessions. The enthusiasm displayed by teachers eager to learn was truly encouraging, especially considering that this second training initiative was organized by private schools, and participation was voluntary, without any compulsion or supervision from the Ministry or school principals. According to the survey analysis conducted, participants joined the training to gain new ideas and skills. Link to the survey: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1AFe9s6-scAQu6LinmWAImB-Jk82BgscTBM925pyC4JE/edit?usp=sharing. Following the training, several teachers expressed interest in joining language communities to contribute in their respective languages. They have since been invited to join the EduWiki Nigerian Group for further training opportunities. An observation made post-training revealed that only 15 out of 40 participants had completed their lesson plans. In response, we introduced one-on-one mentoring sessions, which were not initially part of the training plan, to provide additional support and encouragement to teachers. The overwhelming response to these mentoring sessions reaffirmed the importance of personalized support for teachers. As a result, more teachers were able to submit their lesson plans. This experience shows the importance of integrating one-on-one mentorship into future training initiatives and providing adequate data support for teachers. The feedback received from the surveys further validates the impact of the training program. It is clear that participants are actively seeking to enhance their knowledge and skills, which serves as motivation to continue and expand our efforts in providing impactful training opportunities."

6. What is your plan to share your project learnings and results with other community members? If you have already done it, describe how. (required)

I shared my projects learning with other Certified trainers of the Reading Wikipedia in the Classroom program during our meeting for Certified trainers and explained what worked well and my observations concerning the program. Many of my colleagues learnt a lot from the presentation. I have published on Diff, waiting for the post to be reviewed.
