Bondowoso is a regency located in eastern East Java, 200 km from the capital city of Surabaya. It is home to megalithic remains dating from 6th to 11th-century AD, consisting of cylindrical stones, sarcophagi, mortar, tomb, dolmen and other types of archaeological remains. [1][2] According to Prasetyo (2009) there are at least 26 clusters of megalithic remains in Bondowoso consisting of 801 objects. Official government data cited by Usrifah (2018) even mentioned more, around 1,200 objects. Through initial searches, these megalithic sites do not have articles on Wikipedia, data items on Wikidata, and documentations on Wikimedia Commons. In addition, the documentation of megalithic remains found in Commons is in the form of black and white photos as they were photographed during the colonial era.[3][4][5] These megalithic sites face some threats, one of which is land conversion to be used as a business area so that it must be relocated as was done at one of the sites in Nangkaan Subdistrict. This relocation experienced rejection by local student organisations. [6] Bondowoso residents who want to know about it have to visit the East Java Provincial Heritage Preservation Centre (BPCB Jawa Timur) in Mojokerto, which is approximately 211 km from Bondowoso. It is regrettable that this site as well as others have not been well documented. Documentations available already on the Internet have full copyright or may not have a clear licence, which makes it more complicated to use them as educational material. Another problem is megalithic objects are vulnerable to extreme weather because they are standing in open spaces mostly without protective enclosures. In addition, the extreme weather caused by the climate crisis could erode megalithic objects so that they become easily damaged, such as the ‘jâi’ stone statue in Pekauman Site. By documenting them, the megalithic remains are useful as learning materials for people who are interested in megalithic objects. Through this proposed activity, we want to improve the documentation of megalithic objects in Bondowoso. These documentations can help those who wish to utilise it as educational materials, in Wikimedia or elsewhere, as well as making it more available freely in the Internet in general. We will use a documentation approach to record the presence of megalithic sites in Bondowoso. Based on our initial research, these megalithic sites are spread across several sub-districts in Bondowoso. However, we will not be cataloguing all of them as there are thousands and not all of these objects have been officially inventoried. We will take photographs of the different types of megalithic remains by locations, the surrounding landscape, and their site markers if any. These photographs are then uploaded to Commons, featured on articles in Wikipedia, and its items in Wikidata. This proposal has been submitted and approved before for a previous cycle but after unforeseen obstacles, it is re-proposed here.

7. What are the planned activities? (required) Please provide a list of main activities. You can also add a link to the public page for your project where details about your project can be found. Alternatively, you can upload a timeline document. When the activities include partnerships, include details about your partners and planned partnerships.

Operational definition

edit

The megalithic artefacts and sites identified for this project are defined through literature study and with a personal visit already done to the PIMB (Pusat Informasi Megalitikum Bondowoso, Bondowoso Megalithic Information Centre) in July 2024. Prasetyo (2009) using an arbitrary buffer of 500 metres among megalithic artefacts and sites scattered through Bondowoso identified 26 clusters spread in 12 districts. The provided coordinates of the clusters were overlaid on Google Satellite imagery and surveyed through Google Street View. It included verified notable sites but also unclear locations in the middle of rice fields or on the side of the road with nothing there. Several maps are published by the government of Bondowoso showing markers of “cultural heritage objects”. Clusters are visible among the markers but upon select inspection failed to be verified through the Google Street View survey. These issues may rise either with the size of the artefacts, incorrect plotting from the sources, obscuring objects like trees or walls, or the limited distance one can view through Google. In other source (Usrifah, 2018, p. 61) citing an official data, there are more than 1,200 megalithic remains in Bondowoso spread on 15 districts but the exact locations are not described.

A visit to PIMB was conducted in July 2024 and managed to make contact with staff, as well as collecting the official brochure. The brochure defined 13 types of archaeological remains spread in 12 districts as described in this following table: Table. Three clusters based on proximity between districts are identified. The archaeological remains here are used as the synonym of "artefacts" in this project. They are located in various places from a dedicated enclosure to a local’s yard. In a survey via Google Maps and literary sources such as Swastika et al. (2021), Prasetyo (2009), Hidayat (2007), Prasetyo (2000), seven sites are also identified and these are termed as "sites" in this project. These artefacts and sites locations are the ones that are going to be visited in the project. There are overlaps between these sites and artefacts, i.e. types of artefacts are present in the sites. Upon discussion with the staff at PIMB, there is a network of ‘’juru pelihara’’ (caretaker) among the locations.

Approach and technique

edit

Five key phases in the project are identified, from initial arrangement, pre-survey, documentation, post-production, and evaluation. The phases and their activities are described in the timeline: 3. Timeline.

Initial arrangements will be done to select five locations among 13 for the pre–survey, and to establish communications with the caretakers of the selected locations. Pre-survey will be held to visit the selected locations, recording their existing conditions and any obstacles such as access, availability for visit, and appropriateness for the actual documentation.

Documentation will be performed, consisting of photography and coordinate survey of the artefacts and sites. Pictures will be taken of the objects, their contextual surroundings, any notable markings, and where possible, the access route. In the case where artefacts and sites overlap, more pictures with these different considerations will be taken. A segmented metre stick of at least 50 cm will be created and utilised to provide measurement guide in the photographs where applicable. Coordinates of taken pictures will be captured via mobile devices’ embedded geotag, and, if needed, will be manually included in the pictures.

Each of the organisers will take pictures either using the digital camera or personal phones. The pictures will be collected and combobulated after a day of documentation. They will then be selected and compared in a conducive and coordinated manner in the post-processing phase. Considerations will include a picture’s main object, informational content, clarity/blur/focus, angle, temperature, exposure, and other needed adjustments. Correction to the pictures will be made where it is appropriate. The pictures are then prepared in a spreadsheet with its bilingual descriptions, licence, custom template, categories, and title, and uploaded with PattyPan. Articles, items, categories, and a geographic data file will be created, featuring the uploaded pictures.

The methodology concept is explained in the following figure: link

Evaluation and final report building will be coordinated in-person in Surabaya and Sidoarjo. The meeting will also include a small photowalk of the organisers to the provincial Mpu Tantular Museum where an original megalithic statue from Bondowoso is currently kept, along with other archaeological remains from East Java.

8. Describe your team. Please provide their roles, Wikimedia Usernames and other details. (required) Include more details of the team, including their roles, usernames, Wikimedia group, and whether they are salaried, volunteers, consultants/contractors, etc. Team members involved in the grant application need to be aware of their involvement in the project.
9. Who are the target participants and from which community? How will you engage participants before and during the activities? How will you follow up with participants after the activities? (required)

The result and the dashboard at the end is planned to be presented as a summary of the project to the Indonesian Wikipedia via the village pump, and the Madurese Wikimedia community to whom we are in contact with. Rife with the prehistoric artefacts across the nation, we hope to give awareness of this part of local prehistory to the communities and more iterations and further participation of similar projects in nature. We are also interested to reach the Bandung Wikimedia community for their WikiCagarBudaya program after this project to see what can we learn from each other.

10. Does your project involve work with children or youth? (required)

No

10.1. Please provide a link to your Youth Safety Policy. (required) If the proposal indicates direct contact with children or youth, you are required to outline compliance with international and local laws for working with children and youth, and provide a youth safety policy aligned with these laws. Learning and metrics

edit
17. What do you hope to learn from your work in this project or proposal? (required)

We aim to understand the reasons behind the limited documentation and outreach efforts concerning the subject. Despite the presence of numerous notable researchers and research initiatives, it remains largely an academic niche. To illustrate, specifically, as noted by a historiographical review by Prasetyo (2000), academic’s interests on Bondowoso Megaliths piqued for some more only after the initiations on behalf of Badan Penelitian Arkeologi Nasional in 1980s, more than 40 years after pre-World War II field surveys such as by Steinmetz in 1898 and excavation activities by Willems in 1938. To add, while the general public has some keenness in the broad subject of prehistory via many school curricula, Bondowoso stone artefact complex is primarily regarded as a local phenomenon and, per Hidayat’s (2007) survey summary, only to be out of use recently in the late XIX century after a great immigrations of Madurese people for cane sugar and tobacco plantations boom, which explains the research hindrance problems explained in many past surveys and thus hindered the coverage for the wide populace. Some members of the team, who reside outside the Bondowoso area, expressed a palpable fascination after a preliminary brief, upon discovering that a significant megalithic site is within close proximity.

As such, our initial assumption of this matter is that this may be due to a lack of proper handling and systematization, as many artefacts are mostly nameless, underwent a little research, or handled poorly. Although we find the existence of PIMB might be useful for the general populace as a main information source, many in situ objects still require proper know-how knowledge to even reach them.
