Part 1: Project and impact
edit1. Describe the implemented activities and results achieved. Additionally, share which approaches were most effective in supporting you to achieve the results. (required)
The Monuments Photowalk Tunisia is a photography and documentation project aimed at capturing high-quality images of classified monuments across Tunisia, uploading them to Wikimedia Commons, and using them to enrich Wikipedia articles. This initiative not only promotes Tunisia’s cultural heritage but also enhances its representation on global platforms. Project Phases: 1. Monument Identification The project begins with the identification of monuments to be documented. We collaborate with the relevant authorities and refer to official lists of classified monuments. The list is then analyzed and prioritized based on accessibility, historical importance, and documentation needs. A comprehensive map is created to plan photowalks efficiently. Photowalks We organized five photowalks to capture images of the monuments:
Each photowalk focused on a specific region or set of monuments. Teams of photographers and volunteers participated in these on-site activities, ensuring that monuments were photographed from various perspectives. 3. Workshops and Uploading Between photowalks, workshops were held to:
Photo Selection and Editing:
Review and select the best images from each photowalk. Edit and enhance images to meet Wikimedia Commons' quality standards while maintaining authenticity. Commons Uploading Training:
Train participants on how to upload images to Wikimedia Commons, ensuring proper categorization, descriptions, and metadata. Use templates and tags that align with Wikimedia Commons’ standards for monuments.
Planning and Feedback:
Discuss lessons learned from the previous photowalk. Plan logistics for the next photowalk, including routes, monument priorities, and required equipment.

Part 2: Learning
edit4. In your application, you outlined some learning questions. What did you learn from these learning questions when you implemented your project? How do you hope to use this learnings in the future? You can recall these learning questions below. (required)
You can recall these learning questions below: As part of this activity we want to learn more about wikimedia (Wikipedia, Wikimedia commons and wikidata) to learn more about monuments of Tunisia to increase the database of wikimedia about Tunisian archeologie
In our application, we aimed to explore several key learning areas, including gaining deeper knowledge of Wikimedia platforms (Wikipedia, Wikimedia Commons, and Wikidata) and expanding our understanding of Tunisia's monuments. The implementation of this project has provided several insights:
What We Learned Enhanced Understanding of Wikimedia Platforms:
We gained valuable experience in navigating and contributing to Wikimedia platforms. Participants learned how to properly upload images to Wikimedia Commons, use appropriate categories, and ensure high-quality metadata. Through Wikipedia and Wikidata, we discovered how to create and improve articles, link content across platforms, and utilize structured data for better discoverability. Cultural and Historical Knowledge:
Exploring Tunisia’s monuments allowed us to deepen our appreciation for the country’s rich archaeological and cultural heritage. The process of documenting these sites also highlighted lesser-known monuments that are equally significant but often overlooked. Building a Collaborative Community:
The project fostered teamwork and collaboration among volunteers, photographers, and history enthusiasts. It demonstrated the importance of collective effort in achieving a shared goal, which is crucial for Wikimedia initiatives. Identifying Gaps in Wikimedia’s Database:
While working on the project, we identified areas where information about Tunisian archaeology and monuments was lacking. This gave us a clearer vision of how to prioritize future contributions.
5. Did anything unexpected or surprising happen when implementing your activities? This can include both positive and negative situations. What did you learn from those experiences? (required)
Unexpected or Surprising Situations Positive Surprises Community Engagement and Enthusiasm:
We were pleasantly surprised by the enthusiasm of participants, especially local community members, who showed genuine interest in learning about Wikimedia platforms and contributing to the project. Some volunteers took the initiative to explore additional monuments beyond the planned list, contributing more images than expected. Discovery of Lesser-Known Monuments:
During our photowalks, we stumbled upon several lesser-known or unclassified monuments that were not initially part of our plan. Documenting these sites added an unexpected layer of richness to our project. Skill Development:
Many participants quickly developed advanced skills in using Wikimedia Commons and Wikipedia. This was particularly rewarding, as it showed how impactful hands-on workshops can be. Negative Challenges Logistical Issues:
Organizing photowalks in remote or rural areas presented challenges such as transportation difficulties, unpredictable weather, and restricted access to some monuments. Some participants faced challenges in managing their schedules, leading to lower attendance during certain activities. Technical Difficulties:
A few participants struggled with technical aspects, such as uploading images to Wikimedia Commons or editing metadata correctly. These issues occasionally slowed down the project’s progress. Limited Access to Information:
In some cases, accurate historical or archaeological information about certain monuments was difficult to find, making it challenging to create detailed and accurate Wikipedia articles. What We Learned Adaptability Is Key:
Flexibility in planning and execution is crucial. Adjusting our plans on the spot, such as including newly discovered monuments or rescheduling activities due to weather, helped keep the project on track. The Importance of Preplanning:
More comprehensive logistical planning, including transportation, backup schedules, and site access permissions, would reduce unexpected hurdles in future projects. Tailored Training Is Essential:
While some participants excelled, others needed more support. Offering varying levels of training, from beginner to advanced, can ensure that all participants feel confident and capable. Community Contributions Matter:
The unexpected contributions from local community members reinforced the value of involving diverse stakeholders. This can be expanded in future projects to engage even more people. Collaboration with Experts:
The difficulty in accessing reliable information highlighted the need for partnerships with historians, archaeologists, and local cultural authorities to provide accurate data for Wikimedia projects. Future Strategies Improved Logistics: Allocate more time for site scouting, transportation arrangements, and contingency planning. Enhanced Workshops: Incorporate tailored training sessions and offer follow-up support for participants struggling with technical aspects. Community Outreach: Strengthen ties with local communities and cultural organizations to broaden the scope of contributions and resources. Focus on Documentation: Build a network of experts to assist with gathering accurate and detailed historical information for monuments.
6. What is your plan to share your project learnings and results with other community members? If you have already done it, describe how. (required)
Community Presentation Organize a dedicated session or webinar to share the outcomes of the photowalk. This can include:
Highlights of the monuments photographed. Key achievements, such as the number of participants and photos uploaded. Lessons learned during the organization process and suggestions for future photowalks. Online Report on Wikimedia Platforms
Publish a detailed report on the Wikimedia Commons project page, including: Statistics about uploaded photos. Links to the best contributions (Quality Images or Featured Pictures). Challenges faced and how they were overcome. Share the report on relevant mailing lists, such as those for Wikimedia Commons or local Wikimedia affiliates. Blog Post or Social Media Sharing
Write a blog post summarizing the experience and results, with visual highlights. Use social media to share the blog post, photos, and participant testimonials to reach a broader audience. Workshops and Events
Host a follow-up event or workshop to train participants and other community members on photo editing or contributing to Wikimedia Commons. Use this event to discuss the photowalk experience and gather feedback. Collaboration with Other Projects
Share the outcomes with organizers of related projects, such as Wiki Loves Monuments or Wiki Loves Earth, to strengthen collaboration and inspire similar initiatives. Documentation for Future Projects
Create a guide or toolkit for organizing photowalks based on the experience of Monuments Photowalk Tunisia 2024. Share this guide with local communities and on Wikimedia resource platforms for use by other organizers.
