Part 1: Project and impact edit

1. Describe the implemented activities and results achieved. Additionally, share which approaches were most effective in supporting you to achieve the results. (required)

The Let's Connect Peer Learning Program in Kwara entered its second phase following a successful initial run from September 30, 2022, to March 30, 2023. This phase aimed to sustain engagement with past participants while welcoming new members. Building on lessons learned, it became clear that physical interactions enhanced learning, with experienced Wikimedians more actively engaged during online sessions. New editors struggled to participate without tools like Jamboard. Additionally, participants expressed interest in acquiring skills not covered in the first phase due to capacity limitations.

To address these challenges, physical learning clinics were organised to ensure the active involvement of all attendees and cater to their desired skill development. Ten active Wikimedians from Kwara State, Nigeria, who had previously organised Wikimedia projects, received financial and logistical support through the proposal.

The Let's Connect Peer Learning Program provided a secure environment for Wikimedians to share and acquire skills relevant to Wikimedia projects, organisational tactics, and interpersonal communication. Participation in the program aligned with the Movement Strategy, emphasising knowledge-sharing, skill-building, people-centeredness, and solidarity, aiming to adapt to local contexts and community needs.

Barriers to participation, such as limited connectivity and access to technology, were identified and addressed. Each participant received a $30 scholarship to support their involvement. The initiative showcased the capacities of the Wikimedia Nigerian Community and informal groups, fostering a culture of peer support and inclusive learning.

Ultimately, the goal was to nurture an inclusive learning community and promote active engagement in the Let's Connect Peer Learning Program, fostering knowledge-sharing and skill-building among Wikimedians in Kwara State. For this grant, we will be using two strategies which are Participants-led Connections/Cluster Connections and Organizing Learning Clinics:

1. Participants-led Connections /Cluster Connections: In this project, the 10 participants were divided into three groups, with two groups comprising 3 participants each and the last group consisting of four participants. These groupings were based on the skills they aimed to develop or share with their peers. Each group conducted three connections, each led by one participant. Breakout rooms were utilised for these connections, necessitating a subscription to Zoom.

This structure also entailed an initial preparation time of at least 1 hour to review material, followed by a 1.5-hour connection session, and finally, a minimum of 1.5 hours dedicated to follow-up on the learning material.

On February 4, 2024, the first cluster connection for each group was held as a combined session. Zoom Breakout Rooms were used by each group for these sessions. On February 11, 2024, the second cluster connections were held following the same structure. The third and final cluster connections for each group were held on February 18, 2024 following the same structure as that of the first and second. These combined sessions each lasted for 2 hours. Expected no of participants: 10 Total no of participants: first cluster connection (10), second cluster connection (9), third cluster connection (10). Activities: Group of participants, identifying sharers, Determining the topic/skill to share, Reviewing learning materials submitted by sharers and sending to other members, Designing the Learning Clinic session structure and learning outcomes, Communicating the sessions, Facilitating the session, Tracking participants understanding and participation through the jamboard, Organising material on the Let’s Connect meta resource page for public use and Disbursement of funds. All of these activities were done in coordination with the Let’s Connect working group. Time dedication: 2 hours for each session. Number of sessions: 3 Cluster Connections were organised during the period of this grant.

2. Organising Learning Clinics: Let’s Connect Kwara held three learning clinics during the period of this grant. Two in-person learning clinics were held on 12 and 13 of January, 2024. The last learning clinic was held on 25 February 2024. It was held on zoom and it was also the final session for the Let’s Connect Peer Learning Program in Kwara 2.0. Expected no of Participants: 15 Total no of Participants: 1st Learning Clinic (14), 2nd Learning Clinic (13), 3rd Learning Clinic (15)

Topics: First Learning Clinic: Proposal Writing for Funding Second Learning Clinic: Designing Learning/Retrospective Sessions Third Learning Clinic: Creating, Managing, and Sharing Tutorials and Resources

Activities: Determining the skill to share, Defining Let’s Connect participants to invite and organising the registration form, Designing the Learning Clinic session structure and learning outcomes, Organising any pre-session material to review and sending them to registered participants, Communicating the Learning Clinic, Facilitating the sessions, Organising material on the Let’s Connect meta resource page and Disbursement of funds. Time dedication: 2 hours per learning clinic.

Part 2: Learning edit

4. In your application, you outlined some learning questions. What did you learn from these learning questions when you implemented your project? How do you hope to use this learnings in the future? You can recall these learning questions below. (required)

You can recall these learning questions below: We would like to gather data to help us answer some of these key questions that are related to the desired outcomes of this proposal: Are participants engaged with Let’s Connect and interested in continuing to participate? Do they feel that it is a safe and inclusive learning environment? Are the opportunities the program offers and the processes clear for participants? Are participants learning and sharing skills that can be applied to their Wikimedian activities? Are we building collective capacities that can further support Wikimedian communities in our context? Is the support offered through this funding helping to reduce barriers to participate in language spaces? Are there any existing barriers? Are the learning methods adequate for participants' needs and interests?

I was able to gather that: 1. Sixty percent of the members actively participate in Let's Connect and express a desire to continue their involvement in the future. 2. Feedback from the jamboard comments and survey responses reveals that participants perceive the learning atmosphere as safe and welcoming. 3. Participants successfully engaged with one another and grasped the procedures of the program. 4. Members acquired knowledge and skills applicable to their Wikimedian activities, ready to share these with their communities. 5. We fostered group skills that will further benefit Wikimedian groups in our community. 6. Participants greatly valued the logistical support, facilitating their full engagement in the sessions. 7. Physical sessions proved invaluable, fostering stronger connections and physical interaction among participants. 8. There was no problem of unstable internet connectivity during physical sessions and this ensured uninterrupted proceedings. 9. Providing immediate feedback and one-on-one assistance was found to enhance participants' prioritization skills, increasing their contributions and engagement. 10. The project exceeded expectations, with participants showing enthusiasm in contributing, as the chosen skills closely aligned with their interests.

5. Did anything unexpected or surprising happen when implementing your activities? This can include both positive and negative situations. What did you learn from those experiences? (required)

Yes. Despite sending out registration forms and emails to confirm their availability before the sessions, we were unable to reach the target number of participants for the physical sessions, even though they had confirmed their attendance.

6. What is your plan to share your project learnings and results with other community members? If you have already done it, describe how. (required)

We already published a Diff blog post to document our in-person learning clinics, and the link to it can be found in our drive above. We will be publishing another Diff blog post to document our overall experience and share it with other community members.
