Part 1 Understanding your work edit

1. Briefly describe how your proposed activities and strategies were implemented

We are happy that our proposed activities and strategies were successfully implemented and actually results surpassed our initial planning.

We successfully reached out to developers, humanists and academics to attend and assisted them to contribute and become members of wiki community. Participants were mostly students of the Ionian University, from the Depts. of Informatics, Translation, etc. Academics (Professors, Vice President of the Dept. of Informatics) attended, presented and expressed interest to participate in relevant future events. We also had some high school students! Main event outcomes: + Translation of wikimedia core code and main extensions: 100% from less than 50%. + 51 Articles Created (1.69K Edited) + 7.48K Total Edits (367K Bytes Added) + 243 References Added + 82 Commons Uploads

The Ionian Wikithon was an event that attracted a great deal of publicity in local media, like newspapers and tv channels and it trended on social media.

2. Were there any strategies or approaches that you felt were effective in achieving your goals? Please describe these strategies and approaches.

Core activity this year was the participation of six members of the community in Wikimedia Hackathon 2023, held in Athens Greece. The three organisers, Marios Magioladitis, Eleni Christopoulou & Dimitrios Ringas as well as three student volunteers attended, got inspired and organised cooperations that were a later applied in Ionian Wikithon enriching its program and attracting and motivating participants. Example cases are the translation of core wiki code and extensions, in cooperation with Amir Aharoni whom we met during the WMHack2023, as well as Diego de la Hera's in situ presentation of his wikimedia funded project on automatic web citations' creation and Ilias Sarantopoulos (WMF staff) both of whom we also met in WMHack2023.

Core achievement was also the fact that we have repeating volunteers from the Dept. of Informatics which cultivates a institutional memory and experience in the organisation of similar events. This implies that it is vital to keep the community and volunteers engaged in regular events, repeated every year or even more frequently, as this further cultuvates a close cooperation between the Ionian University and Wikimedia Community.

C. Develop content about underrepresented topics/groups Neither agree nor disagree
D. Develop content from underrepresented perspectives Neither agree nor disagree
E. Encourage the retention of editors Neither agree nor disagree

Part 2: Your main learning edit

6. In your application, you outlined your learning priorities. What did you learn about these areas during this period?

1) What factors motivate students to participate in this event and contribute more actively?

Group work in small groups definitely promoted contribution. Meeting people enganged in the community in various roles. The appreciation received by the wikimedia community was an important factor. Gamification, as depictor, counting translation contributions, etc, strongly engaged students. Prizes were appreciated, but not a sole motivator on their own.

2) How many students had also participated in last year’s event? This was an important question for us in order to access successful repeatability of the event and long lasting connections with the community. An important parameter was that people who attended for the second time were already familiar with the tools, thus they engaged also is mentoring newcomers.

3) How many students have been able to identify a Wikimedia project to contribute? The vast majority were able to identify specific needs and contribute to them.

7. Did anything unexpected or surprising happen when implementing your activities? This can include both positive and negative situations. What did you learn from those experiences?

We planned for a Wikimedia Hackathon satellite event, but we were also able to attend (the organisers and some student volunteers) the main WMHack 2023 in Athens, which significantly enriched our schedule. For instance Diego de la Herra expressed his interest in attending our satelite event in Corfu, which gave our participants the chance to meet and interact with a volunteer of the movement who has significant contribution.

8. How do you hope to use this learning? For instance, do you have any new priorities, ideas for activities, or goals for the future?

We will build on this experience, in order to organise more and enriched events in the future. We will work closer with the community and identify broad needs that we can contribute to.

9. Documentation of resources: Use this space to upload any documents that would be useful to share with others (e.g. communications material, training material, presentations).
