General information edit

  • Title of Proposal: Introducing Wikipedia to Fante Wikimedia Community
  • Username of Applicant: Robertjamal12
  • Name of Organization: N/A
  • Amount awarded: 2565.1
  • Amount spent: 3000.03 USD, 22700 GHS

Part 1 Understanding your work edit

1. Briefly describe how your proposed activities and strategies were implemented

Three in-person training workshops and three online events for new and existing editors of the community were organised for three different units of people living in different Cities (Cape Coast, Takoradi and Accra) during the project's duration. The targets were the natives and linguistics, so in-person events were organised in Language departments across Universities in the Central, Western and Greater Accra regions of Ghana, which hosted Students and lecturers, whereas the online saw participants across Ghana and this played a key factor in achieving our outcomes

2. Were there any strategies or approaches that you felt were effective in achieving your goals? Please describe these strategies and approaches.

Yes, both strategies or approaches (In-person and Online) were effective in achieving our goals. We also implored the techniques of a learner-centred approach which was purely hands-on. These approaches were very effective as they saw the recruitment of over 50 new editors and over 40 active community members who contributed to the creation of over 290 articles in the Incubator and other improvements on Wikidata (14.1K descriptions Added, 41 interwiki links added, 25 items created, and 562 labels). To help members stay active, they were provided with data allowances to offset their internet data expenses

3. Please use this space to upload media and other files that help tell your story and impact.

4. To what extent do you agree with the following statements regarding the work carried out with the support of this Fund? You can choose “not applicable” if your work does not relate to these goals.

Our efforts during the Fund period have helped to...
A. Bring in participants from underrepresented groups Strongly agree
B. Create a more inclusive and connected culture in our community Strongly agree
C. Develop content about underrepresented topics/groups Strongly agree
D. Develop content from underrepresented perspectives Strongly agree
E. Encourage the retention of editors Agree
F. Encourage the retention of organizers Agree

5. Is there anything else you would like to share about how your efforts helped to bring in participants and/or build out content, particularly for underrepresented groups?

As a new community trying to build a community of volunteers for the Fante language, targeting natives, students and Lecturers in various language universities saw more participants interested in contributing to their local wiki. Locals in the Central and Western Region have little knowledge of Wikipedia and its sister projects, so our efforts to introduce Wikipedia to the Fante Community helped bring in participants who know the language and were eager to contribute, especially to their local wiki, which is the Fante Wikipedia Incubator.

Through our efforts, a group of Fante Wikimedians on various Campuses have been created to continue meeting up and contributing. One key factor identified that acts as a barrier for the group, in which most of the community members are Students, is the high cost of living at the moment in Ghana as there is an increase in data cost, which in turn hinders the ability of community members to contribute in their volunteer time. Another barrier is IP Blocks affecting community members. During the project, we had to seek Global IP blocks (temporary) for 70 community members who were participating in this project.

Part 2: Your main learning edit

6. In your application, you outlined your learning priorities. What did you learn about these areas during this period?

We realised that organising in-person events was the best method for effectively training new Fante Community members to become active Wikidata and Wikipedia editors. The in-person events saw participants concentrated and excited to be part of the community compared to the online event.

Community members know there are different ways to contribute to Wikimedia and are interested in doing so, as other participants contributed to Wikidata and Wikimedia Commons.

New/existing editors now have the skills and motivation necessary to continue contributing to Wikimedia projects as participants were trained to edit other Wikipedia projects and awarded data scholarships to enable them to contribute throughout the project period.

Furthermore, we invited existing partners again and established new ones, including a partnership with Wiki World Heritage to collaborate and enhance the visibility of Wikimedia projects on the Fante Wikipedia Incubator (https://wikiworldheritage.org/our-partners/)

7. Did anything unexpected or surprising happen when implementing your activities? This can include both positive and negative situations. What did you learn from those experiences?

One of the unexpected and surprising factors whilst implementing our activities was the number of participants that showed interest in contributing and joining the community. We saw an increase in participation and contribution; It was just unprecedented. This is beacuse natives didn’t know they could contribute to Wikipedia more excitingly in their local language. For future processes, we hope to increase the number of participants for events

8. How do you hope to use this learning? For instance, do you have any new priorities, ideas for activities, or goals for the future?

We wish to use our learnings to build up for future events and manage the community effectively. As a new community, we have priorities to expand and share the sum of all knowledge and make knowledge accessible in the Fante Language across Wikimedia projects. We will continue building the capacity of the community members and organise workshop trainings for community members and team leads. We learnt from this project that more natives are interested in contributing to Wikipedia and its sister projects

9. Documentation of resources: Use this space to upload any documents that would be useful to share with others (e.g. communications material, training material, presentations).

10a. Open Metrics reporting

In your application, you defined some open metrics and targets (goals). You will see a table like the one below with your metric in the title and the target you set in your proposal automatically filled in. Use the tables to report the result. Use the comments column to describe any aspects of this result that you find relevant. If the results were different from the initial target (goals) then you can explain why and what you learned from this. You can also provide any qualitative analysis regarding these results. In the last column please describe the tools and methodology used to collect this data and any difficulties you might have had.
